*is shamelessly clueless* Who is Gerard?

He's in the ensemble of American Idiot. Does the kettle drum part in Whatsername. Also is a understudy for Theo Stockman's "president Gasman" line and in Too Much Too Soon.

He's also Miguel's understudy for Rock and Roll Boyfriend. :) Apparently, he went on for him tonight.

Does Gerard have a blond steak down the middle of his hair by any chance? And what are the casts Twitter links? :)

That would be Chase, who understudy Johnny and St. Jimmy. Gerard is the one who usually starts "American Idiot" as well as the 'Amen' line in "Holiday."

Aspen just tweeted this: "Dear audience member secretly filming our show tonight. We could see you."

This is just bad all around. They usually don't say something unless it's serious and they're fed up with it.

There's a thread around here will all the Idiots' Twitters.

I didn't say that Bono wasn't worthy of respect, I'm saying that he doesn't seem to have been as involved in the production as a composer than most composers. I've read a lot about this show, and frankly, his name seems to come up more in passing than in having real involvement. But, I'm not as enamored of U2 as I used to be back in the 80s or 90s. They are still great performers, but I unfortunately find them kinda annoying these days.

Bono and the Edge are the composers of the music and the conversation began when NewYorkTheater mentioned that the great composers and lyricists of shows had a higher level of involvement in their own musicals. The show has been in previews for almost a month now and Bono just showed up at a show. That doesn't show the highest level of involvement, in my opinion. Green Day was also on tour when AI was getting off the ground, too, but they seem to have been more involved, probably because it's their own work as opposed to "just composing music" for the show. When Bono went to see AI, Spider-Man was either in rehearsals at the theater or had just started, and I've read nothing about him having gone to any of the rehearsals, and I read a lot about Spider-Man.

American Idiot was being working on at least one year or slightly more before it got to Berkeley, it didn't come together fast and neither did Spider-Man. Billie Joe met with Mayer around early 2008 and the Vassar workshop was when, early 2009?

I stick to my opinion, if you write music for a musical, you should be more involved in it.

But yea, at least he didn't have Arachne to deal with!

Yeah, I take all of your points, and it is hard to understand why he took this long to show his face there. If he really didn't go to any of the rehearsals, well, all I can say is that not only would the cast have missed out on the support of his presence, but he himself would have missed out, big-time. All of the great things and the little things and the moments and cameraderie - all of the learning of how the show is put together. You wanna be there for all of it, and for every performance you can get to - and you do it because you fucking love it and it loves you right back, and you can't get enough of it. :)

to completely get off track re: bono and the edge, im not liking them these days. i recently saw IT MIGHT GET LOUD which had jimmy page, jack white and the edge (see it). after learning about how the edge creates his sound his creativity came across as, well, gimmicky. as for bono, his live performance (after shelling out well over $100 per ticket) left me flat, and his louis vuitton ads with proceeds going to charity are in extremely poor taste.

so this spiderman production seems like a big pile of gimmicky meh. but as i always yell at people who judge the AI musical before seeing it, i cannot have a real opinion on this spiderman musical. and i wont be seeing it.

Very good points....One of the things I think that's made AIOB successful (at least from the perspective of how well the cast and the creative team works together) is precisely because of that involvement. They've got such a great working relationship with the band and vice versa because they've all been in this together since before the show was first staged in Berkely. My only regret is how much attention Billie's presence draws away from the rest of the cast when he's on stage with them. Yea, all of us love Billie but the cast has also become a part of the extended Green Day "family" now too -- at least as far as most of us hardcore fans are concerned -- and I don't want them to forget that.

billie takes nothing away from the rest of the cast. his participation made me appreciate the cast's complex movements and ability to handle the combo of the vocals and choreography that much more.

if anything i was worried he was gonna get in THEIR way and fuck their shit up.

having seen AI both with BJA and without him, i can say his presence was felt in the theater in an electricifying way but it was only additive to the cast.

I disagree. To some people, Billie does take away attention from the cast. Because to some people, they're only there for Billie. They could care less abou the cast and their hard work but as long as Billie's there, they're happy. It might not be in specific scenes or songs but in general, I would say Billie takes away attention from the cast. I heard about a person complaining that John's name is above Billie's in the Playbill and online. Seriously?

Good for Gerard and Aspen, speaking out about the camera issues! I applaud them.

(Gerard is easy to pick out, shortest dude onstage.)

And I do agree that Billie 's recent involvement takes away attention from the rest of the cast. I'm sure they have mixed feelings about it...knowing there will be a lot of people coming out to see the show and loving the excitement surrounding the event while at the same time hating all the extra hoopla and cameras and videotaping.

hi plaid. im not involved in the politics of theater so that playbill/online thing isnt meaningful to me. however, if bja draws more people into the st james theater and they are ONLY there to see bja well thats what they will get out of it and thats ok.

personally i thought BJA's stage presence was a big fat jolt of fuck time and it made me appreciate the talents of the cast even more.

im not on a cast crusade tho like you are. im just a stupid green day fan.

while it may take away from their ATTENTION i dont think it takes away from their PERFORMANCE.

I just can't imagine fiddling with my camera while trying to watch every second of the musical. There is so much going on that I wouldn't want to miss one second looking away at my camera.

I have to admit though, I have watched and looked at everything that has been filmed. But after the first few times back in October, it's really all the same except for the current stage door photos.

If it's starting to get noticed by the actors on stage, then it is an issue and needs to stop.

Yep. You wouldn't believe how annoying that can be, lol.

Believe it or not, actors can get distracted by the littlest thing in an audience. While trained, they are still human and attuned to an audience.

I'm waiting for the day that Billie Joe jumps off the stage and grabs someone's camera out of their hand, personally. hehe. Didn't he take someone's camera during a show when he was in it last time around?

I would be really pissed if I was searched going into a theater.

Agreed that people shouldn't film if/when it's bothering the cast (as much as I love every single bit of footage released, it also shows different angles and hopefully better quality etc), but searching... no.

Yeah. I agree.

They shouldn't have to search people.

What if you were visiting the city, and had a camera with you taking pictures of the sights?

I agree, I wouldn't want to be searched either. But at the same time people filming in the theatre is a lot worse than people filming in concerts, and yet you get checked going into a concert.

I'd love to hear about him actually doing it...as long as it doesn't turn into a Peru-like situation :whistle

Seems like they're a bit more laid back about personal photos and vids during the Good Riddance encore?

They are more relaxed about the encore, but whether they like it or not I don't know. I doubt that they do like it, actually, but they don't go ballistic like during the show. The ushers don't rush up and grab cameras or ask people to turn them off during the encore. The encore is the only videos of the show that I will post anywhere, and that's mostly because I feel since they put the audio up everyday from the encore, then the video is just audio with pictures, lol. Which is totally rationalizing it in my brain, but hey, gotta do those brain stunts where you can, lol.

Definitely wouldn't be filming/taking photos during the performance. I don't understand why people would do it. that desparate to get a few hits on youtube/views on facebook?

I remember when I went to see Ricky Gervais a few months back, they specifically said at the beginning of the show not to take any photos or videos....and yet people did it anyway.
