I really like the story and plot of both, and i like them separately and for different reasons.

I like the characters of Christian and Gloria in that they are alot more relatable for anyone born in the 90s (the class of 13 and all that) but the depth and structure of the storyline in American Idiot is much better than that in 21CB, plus St. Jimmy is awesome :D

Christian and Gloria are more characters in an already existing story, whereas JOS and Whatsername create their own story.

I prefer the story of American Idiot- so JOS and Whatsername

I like both of the story characters but Jesus of suburbia and whatsername are my favorites.

I love 21stCB a lot, but they messed the storyline up. I still haven't managed to really figure out what they're trying to say in some songs. AI was definitely more coherent.

As most of the above posts have noted; 21CB plot is all over the place, no idea where it starts or ends and has very little depth to it, rebellious boy falls in love with an even more rebellious girl, the boy feels victimized and is full of self loathing but the girl is stronger and doesn't feel sorry for herself like the boy does.. then what happens? I dunno.

AI's plot and it's story telling technique is flawless and shall never be topped in the world of concept albums, it has a beginning and en ending, has it highs and lows, a complete emotional ride.

I agree with the opening post about the Broadway version being off, I think it butchered the story but it's the director's vision and interpretation. The closest visuals I've seen to the atmosphere of the album was the JOS video, back then I was hoping they film the rest of the songs of the album with the same concept and actors and have it released a special DVD, oh well :)

American Idiot.

It's so much easier to follow as a story, and I can connect with the characters so much more, whether it's because of the musical making it easier to follow, I'm not sure.

I mean, I do love 21st CB, but somehow meh, it's harder to follow.

Bad explanation

Jesus Of Suburbia and Whatsername :)

I find the character of Gloria amazing.

Ugh me too.

JOS and whatsername for sure! although I prefer 21st CB than AI

JOS and Whatsername. Honestly, I have a hard time seeing the plot in 21CB...I love the album and the songs, but I just don't see much of a storyline.

JOS & Whatsernane...

Just something about them!

but i can really relate to both pairs.. but in differnt way and for differnt reasons!!

American Idiot has a better story and better characters imo. JOS is really relatable, as is the whole story with whatsername. I think that the story in AI is really well structured and fairly easy to follow. 21st Century Breakdown is great but it just didn't have the same impact on me that AI did.

well, actually i prefer 21st Century Breakdown though it's story is hidden.

AI release definitely fired Green Day to greater heights 'cause it is quite simple to follow. It's all about some punks trying to find a place in this forbidden world.

Damn so many JOS and whatsername lovers.

well, maybe JOS and Gloria, or Christian and Whatsername?

Christian and Gloria, hands fucking down.

I love AI don't get me wrong but JOS is a bit too whiny for me and although Whatsername is amazing, Gloria kicks her ass.

I honestly just love how Gloria is the only good part about Christian, he's just a diabolic bastard without her. Gloria is just an all-round BAMF, I want her to be real goddammit!

They just seem like stronger characters than JOS and Whatsername. They stand up and actually do what they say they will. They stick together unlike JOS and Whatsername (who didn't really seem to fight for their 'relationship' much) When Gloria gets addicted to pills she realizes she's wrong pretty quick and get's her head straight, coming out as a stronger person (Horseshoes and Handgrenades). Christian doesn't abandon her, he makes it really clear he doesn't like her on drugs but he doesn't leave. Unlike JOS and Whatsername. JOS does come out of his addiction as a stronger person but he runs back home with his tail between his legs. Running away again, which is all he seems to do. He ran away from his shitty home, then he ran away from his 'ex' and his drug addiction.

I find Christian and Gloria to be far more likable, and their characters have yet to be completely butchered in a music video.

I prefer the AI storyline and the characters overall really, because that whole story has been developed pretty much to its fullest capacity what with the musical and the 10 min JOS video etc. The full Christian & Gloria background and story isn't available to appreciate as much as AI's.

JOS and Whatsername actually have a story, so they win by default.

I agree with you!

Well I think the JOS and whatsername story stands out alittle more but I don't care for either

JOS and Whatsername a million times. When I listen to the songs, I can relate to the characters, which does not happen with 21CB =/

I like both but I prefer Christan and Gloria more as characters.

When I listen to American idiot, I feel like Jesus and Whatshername have a lot of thoughts and complaints about life, but they just are along for the ride. They don't seem to make many solid decisions for themselves. And in the end, they end up thinking of what they should have done and there is really no hope or effort left in them.

I feel like Christian and Gloria are tougher, more determined people. It's like, they're just as introspective & they ask questions about life; then take action. They dislike their situation so they are on a mission to change it. So even when things aren't perfect at the end; there is still hope, and they still seem to be trying.

Put simply; JOS would say " I don't like this! Get me out of here somebody?!?"

when Christan would say "I don't like this! so I'm gonna rip it apart into what I want it to be!"

that's exactly what i wanted to say but didn't know how so thanks :P

I'm with ... Our hard to choose one ...

Throughout the story and plot I get the album: JOS and Whatsername.

AI was unique for me, perfect. The unfolding of the plot was phenomenal, with a beginning middle and end.

21CB is already more difficult to understand, but not impossible, I love Gloria and Christian. More history "tragic" AI is what captivated me. And the portrayal of the world today in the characters too.

Sorry for my English, I am not U.S.
