Fuzz
It really is a no-no during live theater. While i get the reasoning behind it, it still annoys me. Yeah, Green Day doesn't prefer people to be taking pictures during the show, and there's a valid reason why - but it bugs the crap out of me when it's against some kind of "tradition". I honestly don't see how having a camera recording the show would be distracting. I understand flashes and such, but someone just sitting there quietly with a camera that isn't blinking or being obnoxious - the only reason against it is monetary, and that's fucking stupid. Joy of suburbia.
The one thing that made me appreciate and respect and love Billie (in an admiring, "you're my hero" way) besides him being in the show really hit me when he was signing autographs and he looked so exhausted! He definitely could have just kept walking to his car, but he took the time to go around and sign as many autographs as possible when you could tell he was just exhausted. I had this thing going through my mind that if I ever saw Billie, even for a split second, I would say something to him. And I got the chance to say it, and I think he heard what I said because he smiled after I said it. I am soooo grateful for all of his dedication to making his fans happy. I was like "Billie Joe, your music has saved my life! Without Green Day, I don't know if I would be here right now, thank you so much!" and I got choked up and thought I was going to cry, and that's when he smiled. I know he probably has heard some version of that statement a thousand times and it seems cliche a little bit, but the fact that I even got to be that close to him and was able to say it just made my dream come true. Because, honestly, their music has helped me through the worst times in my life, as many other people here have said/experienced. Obviously, my story will never seem as hopeful and inspiring as Dawn's, with all the suffering she has been through, but in the same way that Green Day helped her through such difficulties that we cannot even begin to comprehend, I've felt like Green Day has helped me as well. I will forever be indebted to them for all they've given me since I've gotten into them and their music, and now that I got the chance to thank Billie, whether he really heard the entire thing or not, it honestly makes me soo happy. This was super cheesy and layered with gooey over-the-top ness, so I'm going to stop now. But seriously, whether or not he ever reads this or hears about it, THANK YOU SO MUCH BILLIE!! Aw, all these stories on this thread are touching me so much. I've been crying all week, man. I feel feel the same way as you. I remember I thanked him for everything he's done for me at the talkbacks and I was stuttering and I was all shaky and he said, "Aw, you're welcome." And just hearing that made everything worth while for me. I mean, my story is minute compared to Dawn's but it just shows how Green Day can just bring us up from the lowest points of our lives and just make everything... worth living again. Ugh...I'm getting all emotional again. I'm stopping now.

plaid ducky
Some people have pointed out to me that they're having a really hard time downloading the encore from last night, so I uploaded it elsewhere. Feel free to take it. I love the random "Arriba" before Esper's guitar solo. LOL. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1641504/time_of_your_life-9.mp3 ETA: http://db.tt/Y1cp8nq
GDM
While i get the reasoning behind it, it still annoys me. No, it's not just monetary, but that does play a part, but not the main issue. The theater is performed live, it's not a movie, it's a different flavor, a different animal and really can't be translated well on film. You lose a LOT of what happens in a theater when you attempt to record it and present it. I've seen plays filmed before and I can't even sit through them. It's a very personal form of entertainment to an actor, and it's the direct relationship of the actor onstage and the audience. Urgh. I wish I could explain it better. It's also the idea of the theater being a sacred space. A play/musical really happens for a specific amount of time, in a specific place and has more to do with memory and space and the connection between the actor and audience. Anyway, this helps a bit explain what I'm talking about, though not much. I have an undergraduate degree in theater, and if I did theater still, and someone was filming me while performing, I'd rip their fucking head off. It's almost as bad as hearing a phone go off during a show. I saw Ed Harris in a play at the public a few years ago, and he almost had a conniption fit when a phone went off during the show. The script kinda sucked, and that part was the best of the show, actually. Haha. Anyway, like I said, they understand it, but I think you are misinterpreting why it's annoying to an actor. http://www.fluther.com/47900/can-you-describe-the-experience-of-live-theatre-and-if-you/

swarheely
so awesome, really love that billie joe did this and that they all support this show so much, i saw it once with tony vincent and once with billie joe, both performances were wonderful, both of them were phenomenal, seeing billie joe in the role was unbelievable, but definitely didn't make me like tony vincents performance any less, he's a genius in that role it really is. billie and tony both give the role something different which was really cool to see how the character is when approached in different ways. Lucky17
That definitely sounded like a chick. @gdpony: I really, really don't like teenies. They give the rest of us fans a bad name. Oh, a girl ran after Joey tonight according to someone who was there. LEAVE THE FRONTMAN'S MINOR SON ALONE. I witnessed this. I was saying goodbye to some friends outside and I heard this YELLING woman screaming that she LOVED him... and went running after him! The poor kid ducked into a car and was driven off. Jeez. Sometimes I'm embarrassed by fans who behave that way. Above all, the Armstrongs are just PEOPLE and they deserve privacy, just like you and I. Goodness. Fuzz
but andres, im pretty sure you wouldnt go into a movie theater and record a movie. isnt it kinda the same thing? I should have added that I don't see the harm in people recording a small part of the show. Obviously recording the full thing and posting it online wouldn't HELP anything. But a small part of it? No big deal. It reminds me of that story from ... last year? This lady went to see Twilight and she recorded a very small scene where one of the guys was shirtless, they kicked her out and threated to sue her. It was like two or 3 minutes of the entire movie, that she was recording because she thought the dude was hot. She wasn't going to go post the full movie online, there was no real argument that her shitty camera recording of a couple minutes was going to financially hurt a movie. I feel the same way about a show.
TAG
If that girl is on here- you are an ass [the girl running after Joey]. Her shoes literally came off. I almost threw them away because of what she did... and I don't know if this other girl was on here but I was upset before the matinee yesterday [personal reasons] Billie was coming into the theater so my friends grabbed me up..this girl asked for a hug and went to kiss him, and if I wasn't so upset I would have punched her in the face. sorry but its the truth. i almost did. i would not have cared if it got me introuble either because im pretty sure i would have been defended by everyone there......OH and she must have been like 14 and her dad was ENCOURAGING IT! people seriously are ridiculous

The kid was just there to see his dad in a Broadway show! I hope she had to walk home barefoot; she should've known better. The Armstrongs are NORMAL PEOPLE and deserve to not be chased and deal with crazy people. If those people that did that (the runner and Billie's personal space popper) are on here, I have no sympathy for you. It's just...that's fucked up. American Basket Case
This may have been addressed already... but have there been any professionals filming AI (or the shows with Billie Joe)? Knowing that I have little to zero chance of seeing the musical live, I would gladly pay for a professionally (and legally) made DVD.

I've never seen Spring Awakening (at least the B'way version), so I didn't know. The first time I saw Spring Awakening at NYU in 1987. It was a production by Anne Bogart set in a space ship. Philip Seymour Hoffman was in it. Some other famous folks now, can't remember who else though. It was weird. I love Anne Bogart. sigh.
