2000 Light Years Away - Written by BJA, Jesse Michaels & Dave E.C.

Ever since I bought Kerplunk! on cassette in 1994 (got all three albums in one day), I couldn't help but notice that the liner notes say that all songs are written by Billie Joe, except Dominated Love Slave by Tre Cool & 2000 Light Years Away by Billie Joe, Jesse Michaels (Operation Ivy) & Dave E.C. (Green Day's drummer after John, before Tre).

I always wondered what involvement they had with the song. It's a really personal one, so I doubt BJA would ask their for help lyrically. Do you think they helped him write the music for the song? Check our the booklet to Kerplunk! if you never noticed this.

Has anyone ever asked BJA about this? I assume not.

Never noticed that. In the CD booklet, it says All lyrics By Billie Joe & Music by Green Day except: Dominated Love Slave by Tre, (who plays what instrument on DLS). "2000 Light Years Away" Music by Green Day, Jesse Michaels, Rippinz, & Dave E.C.

So I guess it's indeed the music, since it only mentions the music, not the whole song or also the lyrics...

that was a bad explanation. Where nothing even needed to be explained.

I don't think that Billie Joe asked help for the lyrics. This is song is about the day he kissed Adrienne so this song is something special for him! I believe it's the music ...

Who is Rippinz? I wonder if BJA was jamming with the three of them & came up with that song on the spot.

But WHY would they need to write the music for this song? It's one of the most uncomplicated GD songs there is!

I haven't heard any GOOD news on the pit for CV.

BTW, 2000 LYA was my very first Green Day song I ever heard ... back in the day ... ah, yeah, those were the days! But these are the days, too!

Ummmm, yeah, I meant Irvine ... you do know it's Cosmo time, don't you???

Yeah, none existed within the first second of the presale or the first second of the regular sale! Something fishy going on there ...

I guess they just helped with the music and Billie Joe wrote the lyrics and the guitar part.

They probably just happened to be there when the band was working on the song and jammed together/talked about it/had input into it to the extent that they deserved a credit for helping write it. Or they might've only contributed a tiny amount or even nothing at all, but Green Day wanted to mention them in the notes anyway because they're friends and stuff.

Either way it wouldn't be that they NEEDED it, it would just be that it happened.

Well, i haven't noticed that before.

I don't think Billie asked for any help in writing the lyrics for the song.

Dave E.C. was a fill in drummer for Green Day when John wasn't around and Tre wasn't available to sub. He was the original candidate to replace John and said he was in the band briefly, and helped write 2,000 Light Years Away. He quit because he didn't think he was good enough. I saw it on one of those documentary DVDs that they carry at record stores.

Yep, he's on it. I believe it's the DVD called "Pogo Paradise".

LOL. I own that. Forgot all about it. Who is Rippinz then!

That's a good question. Maybe they answer it on the DVD, it it's been a while since I watched it. *IF* I get a chance to talk to any of the guys in the band at one of the Frustrators shows in two weeks (I live in the Bay Area) I'll ask them.
