I just watched the video and I love it, although I wouldn't say it's green day's best video ever. I don't like to over analyze videos but my opinion about the dancers is that they're supposed to be distracting and slightly annoying. The fact that Gloria either ignores them or views them as a nuisance shows her resolve to be herself without letting anyone else influence her, which I think is the major trait of the "last american girl".

that's probably already been said but I'm too lazy to read through the thread :whistle

The more I watch it, the more I like it. I really, really love this video. I love the dancing girls, and the kind of fantasy? element they bring to the vid.

((I wanted Addie on the video and she wasn't, so I tried to name the fish Addie in the other thread  I obviously failed, but I still call the fish like that)

And Fishy could've been a subliminal message! Or they could have added an scene of Gloria and Christian's kid playing with a fish in the future? or something like that with the class of 13?

(and is 2AM there? go to bed, and dream about fishes and cars! )

The fish behind bars! or the fish sliding down the chart.

(I went to bed fairly soon after that. Didn't dream about fish and cars though )

I feel like this video doesn't represent Gloria as the subject of this song, but as the voice of this song - it shows up when she's mouthing the words. Nowhere is she doing all the busy stuff of the Last of the American Girls - signing up for causes, self-sacrificing, doing the right-on things - she's out in the wilderness, filing her nails, looking like she's got a hangover. I see the two girls as being the demands of the world - the shouty voices of 'shouldn't you be getting worked up about this, omg, the ice-caps are melting, everything's disastrous, get up and do something!!', and they want her to join in the dance, but Gloria is like they're mosquitoes buzzing round her. She doesn't let them interfere - she's a free spirit, no walls around her, self-sufficient - but she's dissatisfied. Nothing is giving her anything - she sings along with the record for a little, throws another vinyl away, gives some limp applause to band on tv without taking the remote from her hand.

When she detonates the car, it seems like it's pointless, like it's just fucking shit up - but Gloria's face, her smile, is full of peace. She set a fire just to see the flame.

This sounds very good. I wouldn't say the dancers are telling her to care about the things she should be doing - I think they're more quite the opposite, trying to distract her from doing the 'good things'.

It seems as if blowing the car up isn't the end of it, but the beginning of a new chapter.

Everybody keeps stating that the its the fish from 21 Guns. Well yea.. It is.. It's also the TV from 21st Century Breakdown, the burning car of which Christian and Gloria stand on in many artworks, and in the beginning of 21st Century Breakdown, it's also the car which Christian is trying to fix but Gloria ends up fixing.. Also the amps they use in pretty much all their videos. Also a gas mask in there which is from various artworks.. And a vase which is in 21 Guns :)

Like, Gloria fixes the car in 21st Century Breakdown and now she's blowing it up. Why?

It both shows her independence (that's not exactly the right word), in 21stCB Christian can't fix the car, but Gloria can't, and here she breaks loose from, well, whatever you think she's breaking free from, by blowing it up. I don't think it's supposed to be the same car, though. Just happens to both be cars.

I'm not entirely sure if that was a serious or a mocking question, but well....

Because I was ill, I only just got around to watching the video the other night. I gotta say, I think if they were trying to convey the message with the girls and everything that I got, I really loved it. Also, yay for more Jason White :)

Oh, ok. That's a pretty good explanation. :)

i first found it stupid, but now i think it's awesome.... as for the blondes, i think they are something like the sins of gloria, who follow her, or her "alter ego" who makes her to do things she tries to avoid.....

Just saw it, well :/

21st Century Breakdown was a great choice for a single, they made an incredible video for it and the song itself -musically- was worthy of being a single.

Let's just say that this time around they screw up on all three counts.

i thought it was pretty good myself. the blonde girls were of course annoying but they also added some effect to the video in my opinion. i also have to say i loved the facial expressions of green day throughout the video. haha especially billie joe and mike.

well, it could be a good explanation but I don't think that Gloria's face or expression is the typical face or expression oh who is followed and tortured by his sins...

I'm pretty sure that I could've been able to rip it, but... I can't watch it

No you couldn't. It is just like MTV/VH1's video now.... where there is now .flv file (or any other video file) that actually loads
