Bastard of 1967
I'm not huge on Holiday, the talking bit sounds a bit weird imo. I agree with at least part of that -- I think John's finely-tuned theater voice isn't the harsh, edgy, snarl of a sound that this part of Holiday "wants". But one part of his work here is priceless IMO -- note how his voice suddenly cuts in an effeminate affectation (ya, go ahead say that five times fast!) when the lyric changes to "BANG BANG goes the broken glass man/kill all the fags that don't agree". I think the way he pulls this off just nails it -- it draws in the popular sterotype of a gay man's voice and in doing so, really helps underscore the "outcast" point that Billie was trying to make when he wrote the original song. Actually, John doesn't really have a typical theatre voice. He never had a vocal lesson until he got his role in 'Spring Awakening.' YouTube him singing "Don't Do Sadness." Also, that "Bang, Bang" line is sung by Theo Stockman not Gallagher. Theo also sings in "Too Much Too Soon."

Thanks for clarifying -- ya sure could have fooled me about John's resume (and indeed "ya" did!). It's hard to pick up on some of the vocal subtleties between the different actors, especially if you haven't seen the show live yet.

In fact, he almost didn't audtion because he knew that he didn't have a musical theatre background.

Juliette
Just a wee question - anyone know why they've changed some of the lyrics ? Just small things, like in BTL "laughter" to "laughing", things like that ? I'm in love with BOBD btw, it sounds like when they do it live and they get the crowd to sing

Just small things, like in BTL "laughter" to "laughing", things like that ? I'm in love with BOBD btw, it sounds like when they do it live and they get the crowd to sing Total speculation here, but my guess is they tweaked a few of the lyrics to either fit or clarify the storyline as a part of bringing it to live theater. Some of the ambiguities that are OK and even desireable to have in the album would lead to confusion or some other sort of awkwardness on stage, so my best guess is they did what they had to do to plug the holes. Another good example is "Johnny says it's better than here" in Novacaine instead of "Jimmy says..." AFAICT, this helps clarify that Jimmy is Johnny's alter ego or separate, contrived persona rather than a "real" separate person. BOBD is really well done. I think that the final repetitions of the refrain where they bring Rebecca into a duet with John is, for lack of a better word, majestic. I haven't seen the show yet, and my mind is jumping all over the place envisioning what we might see unfold on stage to interpret this part of the song. Pretty sure it's the same, I noticed that too. Come to think of it, they mashed a lot of different songs into the album.
