Going to Pasalacqua

This week’s Song of the Week is Going to Pasalacqua. Please use this thread to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the song.

Going to Pasalacqua was included on 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, which was released by Lookout! Records. Recorded at Art of Ears Studio, San Francisco, it was produced by Andy Ernst and Green Day. 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is a combination of the vinyl EPs Slappy and 1,000 Hours. It was released in 1990 and later re-released in January 2004 by Warner Brothers. This album is the only entire album that features John Kiffmeyer (aka Al Sobrante) on drums. He later left the band and was replaced with the inimitable Tre Cool. 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours has been certified Gold.

I first saw this song performed live at the Bowery Ballroom with my son (it was his birthday) last year. It was such a thrill when they started the song – then near the end Billie saw me singing along and we sang together for a while – he had a funny look on his face as if to say, “Do you really know all the words? Can you really keep up with me?”

Also, Tony and I saw this one together in Glasgow. When I heard the opening chord, I looked at him and said something like, “OMG really?!?!?!” Then we sang along with the whole song – so awesome!

I also can never think of this song without remembering our Absolute Radio Rockoff playlist and the way the DJ kept saying “Pasalalacqua” laugh.gif !

This is another bonus week with 3 videos. I had to include the second and third, because I was in the audience for both of these.

From the ever amusing Jaded show:

From the Bowery show that my son and I saw last year (along with several of you). This one includes a bonus song at the end (She):

From Glasgow where Tony, Bubbles, and I were on the rail right at Billie’s feet watching him perform this song:

Going to Pasalacqua Lyrics

Here we go again, infatuation

Touches me just when I

thought that it would end.

Oh but then again it seems

Much more than that but

I'm not sure exactly what you're thinking.

I toss and turn all night

Thinking of your ways of affection -

But to find that it's not different at all.

I throw away my past mistakes

And contemplate my future.

That's when I say...

What the hey?

Would I last forever?

You and I together, hand and hand

We run away.

(far away)

I'm in for nasty weather,

But I'll take whatever you can

Give that comes my way.

(far away)

Here we go again, infatuation

Touches me just when I

thought that it would end.

Oh but then again it seems

Much more than that but

I'm not sure exactly what you're thinking.

I toss and turn all night

Thinking of your ways of affection -

But to find that it's not different at all.

I throw away my past mistakes

And contemplate my future.

That's when I say...

What the hey?

Would I last forever?

You and I together, hand and hand

We run away.

(far away)

I'm in for nasty weather,

But I'll take whatever you can

Give that comes my way.

(far away)

I toss and turn all night

Thinking of your ways of affection -

But to find that it's not different at all.

I throw away my past mistakes

And contemplate my future.

That's when I say...

What the hey?

yeaah Pasalalakwah! It took me like a month to stop calling it "Going to Pasalalacqua"

I really like this song. At first I was okay with it, I liked it, nothing special, just one song out of many, but a couple of months ago I watched a performance of it live (maybe the New Year's thing in LA? I really don't know, it seems a bit late to me, November or something, but something in my head tells me it was that one. anyway), and that was like a sudden eye-opener and made me fall in love with it. It has so much energy live, I really hope to see it live once. Pity it took me so long to realize how much of an awesome song it is.

I loved the first video (but well, I love every single video from the Jaded show ), still waiting for the other two to load (damn you, Youtube). edit: the other two are great too. love the intimacy from the one from the Bowery Ballroom.

totally unrelated; yay postcount 12,309. which is sort of like 1,039. but in a different order and with a 2 in it ... yeah nevermind.

J'net, I love reading your Green Day memories. It always brings that huge smile on my face :)

For me, Going to Pasalacqua is the same kind of a song as Christie Road. That kind you adore since the very first time.

I love the little details in this song:

-the guitar part just before Billie starts singing

-how he sings 'it would end' and 'comes my way-ah'

-'what the hey!'

-You and I together, hand and hand. We run away. Simple but such a sweet line.

Although I absolutely love this song, I sometimes find it a bit too redundant. But it just depends on my mood, I guess :P

 This is my second all-time favorite GD song, I think. There's something about it that makes me melt every time I listen to it. I'd love to hear it live in person sometime.

The first time I heard this song was at the end of my first Green Day concert, at Arco Arena--granted, I had no idea what song it was at the time, and was confused why they were still going on after Good Riddance lol. The opening line seems to pop into my head constantly, as it seems to become more and more relevant.

Here we go again infatuation touches me just when I thought that it would end

Ah, I've been listening to this song so much lately. I love how he sings "hand in hand we'll run away" as if he doesn't have a tongue. It all just sort of slurs together. Every time I hear the word 'infatuation', this song gets stuck in my head. This song basically defined by life when I was fourteen.

There's a great video of them playing it on Saturday Night Special & they destroy stuff after.

Oh this song <3

When I heard it live for the first time at the first show in Sydney, I freaked out, and I loved that a lot of people had no idea what song it was.

I get tears in my eyes whenever I hear it. Love it.

One of my favorite Green Day songs, I love these lyrics especially,

"Would I last forever?

You and I together, hand and hand, We run away.

I'm in for nasty weather,

But I'll take whatever you can

Give that comes my way.

(far away)"

There's something about this song, that it never gets tiring to listen too, and it makes me want to melt.

Saturday Night Special

I'm just going to throw it out there that I rarely find Billie more attractive than he is in this video.

That is absolutely awesome. Thanks so much for sharing it. It's the actual performance that I love more than the destruction at the end (oh, and of course, Tre's hair ... and Billie's shirt).

I can't forget how happy I was when they did this at the London 24th show - just hearing those first few chords and thinking, "He's actually gonna play it!"

I remember playing this song over and over again when I first got the album.
