LilyMarie
This song means so much to me. I nearly burst into tears when they played it in Seattle. When it first came out, I didn't pay it too much attention. I mean, I dug the song, but I didn't find it particularly meaningful to me. I saw it as a song written about a teenage girl stuck at home with her parents, dying to get away. Cool and all, but not very relevant to me.It wasn't until years later that I realized what a powerful, amazing song it was. I was trapped in a bad marriage with a very controlling husband. I felt stuck, stagnant, oppressed, and like I was dying inside. I knew I needed out, before I lost who I was. It was after a particularly bad day that 'She' came on the radio...and it was like I heard it for the first time. I really listened. I had been screaming in silence for years. I was most definitely locked up in a world that had been planned out for me. And I realized that I could get out. A light came on for me at that moment. I could fucking get out - had to, in fact. I did figure out that all my doubts were someone else's point of view, I found my brick, and I smashed the shit out of my long silence. I got the fuck out. I won't say that it was that week, or even that month...but that song set me on the path. I listened to it over, and over, and over - every single day until I was able to set myself free. Whenever I hear it now, I feel so proud of myself... and so thankful to Green Day for helping me figure it out.

Ila Reto
awe i love She it kinda reminds me of what's going through my boyfriend's head right now. that he's got this girl, opressed and suffocated by authority and her family, and now he steps into the picture to try to help her out. and who could forget these performances? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgumG6Oeg1whttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDN97H4fgAc

Abbey.
so I've given myself a week to let SHE settle in my brain and I keep coming back to the same things that resonate with me strongest in this song. when I hear this song I create a story that has NOTHING to do with the lyrics, since wikipedia tells me the song was written for a former girlfriend of Billie Joe's. i like to think of SHE being about Billie Joe's lovely wife and how back in the days of yor (aka the early 90s) she was torn whether or not to leave her home to go out west and be with him in northern cali. i like to think of him writing this for her and really pleading with her to take a leap of faith and join him. Im not sure why I particulaly personalize THIS song to them, but Billie Joe and Adrienne have become my characters in SHE the way Billie Joe so adeptly creates characters for us in so many of his songs. second - I love the way Billie Joe shifts the lyrics from the THIRD PERSON into YOU in the chorus. So when Im singing the chorus horribly off-key in my car sometimes the YOU is my character Adrienne, sometimes the YOU is myself, and sometimes its some collective YOU. He lets me join in the song to sing TO YOU, whoever I feel like making YOU out to be... Lastly the line SHE'S FIGURES OUT ALL HER DOUBTS WERE SOMEONE ELSE'S POINT OF VIEW....yes, yes, yeS, yES, YES, YESSSSSSSSSSSSS. This line always sits in the back of my brain reminding me to make sure what Im thinking are my OWN thoughts. decision making a la Billie Joe...scary... Hermione
Oh this song is wonderful. I love the scream in the middle, best scream ever . I love the way Billie Joe writes about the female point of view in songs. It's refreshing, and impressive especially considering he is not female! Great lyrics and a great song.and who could forget these performances? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgumG6Oeg1w I was about to post that. I can't get enough of it.
