I couldn't agree more with what everyone's said! :) It was sooooo amazing hearing it live at the Forum! So much energy and BJ's scream was definitely interesting  I simply adore this song, and it's one of my favorites.

I've really enjoyed watching the differences between how Billie used to sing this song and how he sings it now. For one thing, when he sings it now, the first line is SO full of emotion, it's almost overwhelming. And the scream ... it seems like he feels it even more now.

But one thing that's stayed essentially the same, and one of the things I LOVE about watching him perform is the way he plays the guitar on this song (and many other songs). This reminds me of a scene in the Heart Like a Hand Grenade movie where Billie's arm was shown in black and white (he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt so you could see the tattoos on his arm). It was just this arm hanging completely relaxed in front of his guitar - this arm that was so familiar from having seen it so many times. All of a sudden, the arm started to pump up and down really fast as he played the guitar. It kept going on and on until the sweat was flying off of the arm, and the tattoos were a blur.

It was kind of surreal to see that happening live. I love the way he throws every single ounce of everything he's got into his performances. No holding back.

woo. I talked about/linked it in my response on the previous page. :D

Dang, I didn't even bother to read through the rest of the thread. I guess I should have, lol.

I love the whole part about the big wheel, but my favorite is the pet rock.. Ahh, Billie is so awesome.

Same here. And I think that's why I enjoyed hearing it live so much, because I was so used to hearing it on record for years. It's intense there and it's intense in those early versions, but hearing it live, in person, with that intensity blew me away.

Oh, I agree! I've loved that song for so long, only hearing it thru a speaker - hearing, seeing it, and experiencing it live brought it to a whole new intensity. It was really emotional for me, honestly it is every time I hear it. It's like a little reminder - an angel whispering in my ear - telling me to remember who I am.

Yeah, I have an mp3 of the performance from my show, and the audio quality isn't great, but because it's that intense, it's become my favorite version by default, especially since it has so many great memories attached!

Same. I have the version from my show & it's just somehow more magical. He wasn't just singing to me metaphorically, he was literally three feet away from me. Ah this song is too amazing.

Ok, I can't say that, so you win!

This song means the world to me. It's the knife that cut open my guts for them to spill out in front of me in order to be examined, felt with shaking hands, respected, and then stuffed back into my ribcage with a slightly stronger sense of order.

She Video

If I had to wear a badge for the rest of my life that defined which song is me, it's be SHE.

I have to say, as an English major, you have a wonderful way with words. When I read what you wrote I felt chills and had to watch the video that I've watched a million times before.

I love people who use grammar and words correctly. I have to express my love for those type of people.

I love this song. I really think its up there with Green Day's best. Its very easy to relate to. I especially like the lyrics "Are you locked inside a world that's been planned out for you?" and "Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?'

When I was seventeen I had the lyrics to this song printed out and stuck on my wall near my desk, and i'd always end up looking up at them while I was writing. They wound up influencing the story I was on quite a lot. I moved my desk to the other side of the room and had to take the lyrics sheet with me in order to finish that story.

It's the build up of the guitars and the chorus that always gets me, the "Scream at me, until my ears bleed, i'm taking heed just for you". I was new to Green Day still and hadn't heard AI yet and those lyrics always stuck out to me as being more mature than I would have expected.

It's like Billie Joe has just gotten this vision that blew him away, and he's gotta communicate it, loud and clear.

Indeed. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of someone else I know, who is I think around 41 now and has spent the entirety of her adult life living at home, taking care of her father (whose "hobbies" if he has any are 1-worrying, and 2-being sick). It's a disturbingly sad, codependent relationship where she needs to be needed and he needs someone to take care of him -- and all the while he's been feeding her this b.s. about how the world is such a dangerous place and he's purportedly the one who needs to be taking care of her!?

The person I mentioned is "She" in the song -- last summer my wife and I spent a little time time with her and saw how close to cracking she really had become. Every little insignificant thing (even being unable to find exactly the right thing to eat from the take-out Chinese food menu) irritated her. We think that because she feels so out of control with the big stuff (like "what am I going to do with my life even if I decide not to take care of my pseudo-sick father anymore), she lashes out at the little things because that's the only thing left to lash out at.

So "She" strongly and immediately reminds me of this person. "She, she screams in silence, a sullen riot penetrating through her mind", yet she has not yet "figured out that all her doubts were someone else's point of view" (her father's). You listen to the song and you feel the rage of being trapped and the helplessness you feel because there's seemingly nothing you can do about it, slowly building inside until it comes blasting out in that long, primal scream in the instrumental bridge.

This thread is inspiring. I love reading the interpretations of this song by some people. I have to agree with Cheryl that - in my case at the DNA Lounge Show - I was way too concentrated on the new songs that now, I have very little memory of seeing/hearing this song live. I hope I'll be able to hear it live again - like tomorrow night

"yet she has not yet "figured out that all her doubts were someone else's point of view" (her father's).

When those few little bunch of words permeate your brain, and you embrace them, it's the best feeling EVER. Like a slap to the side of the head, or a patented Homer, 'D'oh!' doh.gif Like why didn't I ever think of that before!? It's something I remind myself of often, and I have it written in several places, so that it sticks. Maybe you should introduce your friend to her, I mean 'She'? :)

It really is, Anja. And you'll think of all this when you DO hear it tomorrow!! You must be so excited!

Ahh I freaked with my friend so hard at the concert when they started to play this!

I don't have any inspirational words or insight to the song like the rest of you...I just really, really, really, really, really enjoy it :)

I will. And HELL YES I am excited :D Days like this just always seem so surreal. This is actually my first "planned" Green Day concert considering that the other shows were all very spontaneous, for me and probably the band as well.

I love the speed of this song. It always seems to cheer me up when i listen to it because of it's liveliness. One of the best songs on Dookie in my opinion.

I LOVE THIS SONG!

The line "smash the silence with the brick of self-control" makes me want to scream out loud, whenever I'm feeling bad, angry, sad ... whatever - just to "smash the self-control" and let it all out. And the beat is fantastic to dance all your anger away. :bunny:

Probably every woman or girl has a time in her life where she can totally identify with that song. There are three generations only in my family who love this song: If it's me, my 13 year old niece or my 40 year old sister!

I really really really want to hear that one live!

I love this song... first of all because it's just so catchy. but also because it's a song, like so many GD songs, that I can really identify with whenever I'm having an awful day, or feel lonely, upset, etc. Definitely one of my faves off Dookie.
