no.. I don't think so.. Gloria means Glory.. so it's kind of a double meaning too..

"GLORIA.. Where are you Gloria?"

yeah, that's exactly what i was thinking.

Gloria is a VERY religious name. I would almost say, in a Christian Mass, the name/word Gloria comes up more than "Jesus" does.I would say the name "Gloria" is about as religious in the Roman Catholic and Christian religions as the name "Mary" is.

From 12 years of religion classes and going to church, Gloria is VERY religious. Many people named Gloria are done so because of their religious parents.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_in_Excelsis_Deo. It's Wiki, but it still stands in truth.

I study choir...I am in a professional choir and we sing the "Gloria" all time anywhere from Vivaldi to modern composers and I think Billie is putting mulitiple meanings on the word ..many of us to discover ourselves...

I think he is caring a tradition and may not even know he is doing it at all that is about 1000 years old and its beautiful...call and answer...its a latin word...meaning joy and glory...

Christiani is from Greek meaning follower of Christ or Christ....interesting too is that Christian is a main character in the Pilgrims' Progress...a religious/alegoric story..http://litsum.com/pilgrims-progress/...a journey to redemption more or less from the City of Destruction..

We all read different things from how we are brought up or studied or whatever....but truly is that not pure

genius that we all get different things from the music? I think that is a goal that is worth more than gold...

Gloria = Glory. I think that was Billie's inspiration for using the name.

Guest Hayley
I remember Billie specifically saying that he chose Gloria because it's like 'Glory', which is a religious aspect.

This.

IMO, both of them aren't religious. For Christian, that's obvious.

And I don't believe Gloria is either.

Saint of all the sinners is a metaphore(sp?), cuz she is a sinner, but she does it for a good cause, and that makes her their saint, saint of the sinner, in metaphoric( sp?) meaning.

^ I see your point in that.

I think that they aren't you know, church religious, but religious about what they want to get. So there's some church religion stuff, but it's mainly just about how religious they are to get the change they want.

you know that xmas song??

that goes hark the harold angels sing glory to the newborn king... blah blah blah

gloooooria in excelsis deo. etc...

my mom always sings it near xmas time... lol.

so I definately believe its some sort of religious reference.

but I dont think BJ meant for the characters to actually be religious...

talks about the name:

Gloria is not religious name, Christian is the name of a religion.

Not Gloria

it doesn't have to be the name of a religion to be religious.

Them featuring Van Morrison is an album I came across with a track called "Gloria" -- if you haven't heard it before here's a link:

http://beemp3.com/download.php?file=2875202&song=Gloria

I thought it was interesting cause I know Billie said in an interview that they listened to a lot of old albums while writing 21CB, and it might have been where Billie got the inspiration for Gloria. =)

Anyone else know of this already??? Thanks.

Why are you deciding what inspired Billie Joe's songwriting now? I think most people here know that song and also the many other covers and other songs called Gloria. Billie Joe explained why it was called Gloria many times before. Also the song used to be called Emily. So no, he probably wasn't very inspired by that. Maybe he was a little inspired by Gloria for the end of Horseshoes and Handgrenades, but that's it really, imo.

I hate when people over-analyse things.

@JoseArmstrong

I was referring to an earlier post where someone said that Gloria is religious name, like Christian. Jeez.

Gloria is/can be a religious name. Mostly because it's used all the time in Latin-based Christian masses, Christmas carols, etc.

Christian is an obviously religious name - Gloria is a subtly religious name.

I think it's possibly meant for irony, as neither character seems particularly religious. (And/or Christian is obviously not religious, where Gloria might be seen as being partially or subtly religious.)

It can be, but BJ did not use that name cuz of it.

He explained why, and that has nothing to do with religion.

I think it's a take on the van morrison track! Not just because of the name, but because in Horseshoes and Handgrenades they have the whole "G-L-O-R-I-A!" thing. It's a reference, not a rip-off, because it's so obvious that no one in their right minds would try to release it pretending they'd never heard the van morrison song, haha.

I way prefer Green Day's Gloria, that's for sure.

Green Day reference other bands fairly frequently; Homecoming plays like a best-of-classic-riffs! Not to mention the FHT album, which has Kinks riffs and Who drum fills. It's a positive thing - and very rewarding for the listener when you finally figure out what it is because it's been bugging you all frickin' week, heh.

Again, I am saying this is a GOOD thing :)

Great point! Adding to the irony, it could be something to do with how punk rock is perceived as something of a faith, or a religion - given the album documents Gloria's struggle to keep that mentality and not 'let the bonfires go out'. That notion certainly ties in well with past characters like the Jesus of Suburbia...

When I first heard HAHG, I thought of the song "Gloria" too. It has the same G-L-O-R-I-A thing and all, and I noticed that right away. But I dunno if it's an homage to the Van Morrison song or what. I just think Gloria was picked cuz of the religious ties, and the G-L-O-R-I-A thing was a mini-homage.

@ Billie talking about Gloria vid, he said he considered Emily for a while before Gloria. That would have been interesting..
