Are There Any Republican/Right-Wing Green Day Fans?

I'm not a hard core Christian, but I'm really pissed that Christians were booed one of their concerts.

Really? Is there a video of this somewhere on YouTube or something? Just asking, 'cause I'd like to see it.

They did? That's not cool. :(

Geez, if you read the Green Day Inferno news more often, you'd know this!!

Taken from this article:

Instructed to sing, they sang. Asked snidely, "How many Christians do we have here tonight?" they dutifully booed one of the world's great religions. Later, the Ottawa police received a similar response.

Yeah, I know Green Day didn't boo it themselves. (Or at least it doesn't say they did) but you could tell they were asking for it... because why else would you ask a question like that? Does it matter who's a Christian or not?

Much less Green Day but it would definitely matter at a Cradle of Filth show. :P

I just think that's really disrespectful. Especially from a band like Green Day, who claims they're not like that.

Pft, sorry. :P I'm too busy doing my job and watching over the general chat section so I don't lose my position as a mod. Does being an okay mod outweigh not paying attention? :D Just kidding.

I give GD credit for being gutsy and doing something like that. But then again, maybe it's just easier for me to say that because I'm agnostic and can better relate to GD with stuff like this. I don't know... I see as more of... poking fun and seeing what the crowd's reaction would be rather than being offensive and mean for the hell of it. You know how the guys are. They like to poke fun at people and groups, and I don't think they genuinely try to be ignorant about it. Hell, they do it to themselves sometimes!

That's just my take on it, though. And I'm fully expecting a bad reaction to what I typed.

Well Green Day is like that, with a song like East Jesus Nowhere it's to be expected. Green Day are a voice for a part of society that is mostly irreligious. The preacher says the rock band is going to hell, the rock bands mocks the preacher. That's the way it goes.

Okay, I'll address this, then the main point of this thread. lol

When recently I saw a video of East Jesus Nowhere being played live (in Chicago i think), I saw Green Day pretty much destroy certain practices of Christianity, and it disappointed me. We all know Green Day doesnt give a shit about what people think of them, and I support that. But this is a bit much. Yea, yea, I know I'm Catholic (see my username that I originally came up with five years ago on another site and never stopped using it), but I'm not nearly as 'devout' as I used to be. But still, this whole thing bothers me. And this relates to what somebody asked earlier about whether or not you can like a song but not agree with it. That's exactly how I am with "East Jesus Nowhere." Hate the meaning, love the song in general. I'm not gonna stop listening to Green Day because of it though, because ironically, there is a lot of religious undertone to their new album. Billie Joe even said he used "Gloria" because of its double meaning, a girl's name and its religious meaning. But even without all that, I still wouldn't stop listening to Green Day. lol

That being said, I am also a Republican, right-wing, conservative, whatever you wanna call it. And I know I'm gonna get absolutely flamed for this, but I really did like Bush (until the latter part of his 2nd term. eh). And I wanted McCain to win this past election (Actually, I really wanted Huckabee, but anywhoo...). But I think, knowing my beliefs, and knowing Green Day's beliefs, I can respect it and still admire and love their music. As long as I realize what they're talking about, and look at it from both sides. I don't agree with a lot of it, but it's still incredible music. Heck, I love the track "Favorite Son" I just dont like that it makes fun of Bush. lol

That's how I feel. GD likes to speak their mind about stuff. If they don't like something that is going on in the world, they are going to question it. They have the guts to stand up and say what some people think but wouldn't dream of saying from fear or rejection or disapproval from friends, family, and the general public. GD didn't like the hypocrisy of religion, and thus, EJN was created. They spoke their minds on that subject, and I give nothing but praise to them for doing that.

that's explaining what they don't like about the religion... it's full of hypocrisy, and i'll admit to that. i think it is, too. but for a band that doesn't judge people by race or age or anything else, why should they do it by religion, too? it's not like by me being Christian that there's something wrong with me.

you don't have a religion so you can't really look at it that way. but how would you feel if they said something like that about whatever heritage you are? it's not nice to be insulted.

Because race and age and gender aren't choices.

I don't think a Christian should be entitled to any less scrutiny or any more respect than a Star Trek fan. You can like them or dislike them or not care. I'm sick of all this 'respect religion' bullshit when atheists are treated like dirt in America.

well i don't treat atheists like dirt. i don't have any problems with people as long as they respect my beliefs. now, if i said i wanted to blow people up because i think it's fun, then i would understand why people would hate me for that.

One thing to keep in mind when Green Day says or does outrageous/offensive things is that they are punks. One of the biggest factors in punk is shock value, some things the do/say is just to get a rise out of people and shock them. Why else would Billie touch himself at concerts?! ;)

The thing is, Green Day like to make fun of people at their shows. Half of what Billie says to the audience is insults! They'll take the piss out of someone for any reason - the key is it's all done in fun and not to be taken seriously.

Billie's onstage persona is brash and cocky and really quite rude but it's all tongue-in-cheek. They're not going to suddenly become humourless just because the topic happens to be religion, they'll treat it like they would any other topic.

Ha yes exactly! It would be a sad day if Green Day started tiptoeing around and being politically correct for fear of offending people. Their humour is near-to-the-knuckle that's how it's always been, that's why we love them :D
