Sounds to me like you are in denial. There is nothing punk (musically) about "Last Night on Earth" or "21 Guns". Face it, the band tried tackling a new genre - which is "Classic Rock/Pop". Call it Power Pop, call it whatever.

I'm not saying the band is no longer Punk, but the last two albums (for the most part) - are completely different Genres then say Dookie or Insomniac.

Some songs are pretty punk, like Horseshoes. Its not always about the music either, its the message/lyrics. Like I said though, most of Breakdown is bordering power pop.

How can you make Classic rock? Its got the name for one reason, its old and considered "classic" (Zep, Guns and Roses ect.)

- Christians Inferno (The Network right here)

- Horseshoes And Handgrenades (Foxboro Hot Tubs)

Oh totally, I hear those influences.

You can make "classic/rock" by making a 70min Rock Opera.

:P

This album (and AI for that matter) were very much influenced by 60's/70's era Rock Concept albums. Which we also call "Classic Rock". Just read interviews with the band. I still think it's silly for you to hold on to the band as punk group (or rather, that you are so bothered that they could be anything besides that). Who cares if they aren't a full on punk group right now?

Doesn't mean they can't go back and make a Punk album later on. BTW, I'm strictly speaking on musical terms. Billie has stated numerous times he is "Punk" - and I won't argue with that. I just don't get why you care that they are making different genres of music.

Lastly, no fair cherry picking. The majority of the album is not very punk at all (musically).

Well, thats just not my opinion. I thought alot of AI was punk too, JOS, Holiday (how can your argue with AI not being punk? Musically, yes, lyrically, hell yes. Again, Ive heard poppy songs from the Ramones) and St.Jimmy.

Im lost then, what defines punk? Bad singing ala Rancid (who I like) Sex Pistols?

Punk is an attitude, it isn't defined. Sub genres of punk can be more easily delineated because they same some similar characteristics

This. We are talking about "musical genres", not movements/attitudes.

BTW, I will agree that AI was more Pop/Punk sounding then 21st Century. But again, you are a cherry picking. Just face the fact they aren't making the same music they used to. :P

Yes yes. :)

Look, when it comes down to it - genres are pointless. What it really comes down to, is do you fucking enjoy it? If you do, shup and enjoy it.

AI is not that good... Basketcase is by far a bigger hoit for example.

American Eulogy burns down AI (song) and then wipes the ass with the little remaining pieces xD

I think the song (AI) is really good. But I mean...if you compare it to some of the songs on 21CB...holy hell it seems so boring. Yes, American Eulogy is an awesome song. East Jesus Nowhere is so good it almost makes AI non-existent.

I'm still a bit hesitant to compare 21CB and AI (albums) but at this point I would have to give the edge to 21CB. I do think my expectations have been surpassed, and I was expecting something great.

Must have listened to the entire album 10 times through so far. Gonna be a shame when I have to erase all the songs and play counts on Friday when I get the album from iTunes. Oh well..it will get plenty of listens regardless.

Sadly, I had the same feeling. Its because of the poppiness of Breakdown, the AI songs now seem so minor (guitarist/muso talk here) and dull.
