Oh, I wasn't saying anything against the song itself. Although the song is repetitive, I definitely really like it. That's why I think it merits a better video.

I'm not sure if you brought up the whole album to refer to the KYE video, the song, or both, but when I heard the whole album at the Fox, it was pretty magical.

Well, I brought up the whole album just so I could highlight KYE. I have not heard the whole thing, but sometimes to me albums are like puzzles, so when you here one song in the context of evreything else, it makes more sense.

So I was meaning to say something along those lines in this case. It seems like though that you know what I mean since you heard the whole thing, which is AWESOME by the way that you got to!

May 15th. I can not wait!!

i thought the idea behind the video was good...like the different angles from security cameras and the fire, but there was something about the way the camera moved that seemed too professional. It's hard to describe, but it was too steady. I would have preferred it without all the cut-away shots and steady-cam pans and zoom-outs. It was also kinda dark and hard to see the band properly. I think that's one of the things that makes it different from previous Green Day videos; Basket Case and American Idiot both had bright colours in them, and were visually engaging and eye-catching.

That said, I enjoyed the video. Probably because it was Green Day and what I think is an awesome song, but still.

"Hey guys, lets have lower production values than the videos from your last album, arbitrary shots from different kinds of cameras, and finish it off with a random, but lame inferno of fire as the background. And lets add some barbed wire shots and a shot of the capitol so that we can pretend that the video actually conveys some message. It will be great!"

My interp as well....well said! I'm starting to feel the same about Green Day's recent lyrics too, they're like big heavy profound sounding lyrics that really lead nowhere and have no real meaning. They say they leave it up to the individual to come up with their own meaning which some people say is genius but I think is just a cop out for not being able to convey your point.

That's not with all their recent songs, just most.

Just seems to me everything Warning and before was more profound and enlightening. Billie really is a very smart guy with good strong opinions, let's hear em buddy!!

His retirement may have had something to do with it.

Sam Bayer is not retired. He's doing the new Nightmare on Elm Street.

As for Know Your Enemy, I think the whole point is that this song could apply to anyone's enemy. Billie Joe isn't trying to tell us who our enemy is. He's trying to tell us that it's important to stop and think about it and figure it out - to not allow ourselves to become complacent. The enemy could be the government, corporate America, the guy next door, or our own selves and the things we do to mess ourselves up. IMO, that's why the song is not written in a more specific way, but a lyric like "Don't be blinded by the lies in your eyes," is a sweet little hint that we shouldn't only be looking externally for enemies.

I think there's a lot of depth to this song, but it's easy to miss because it's subtle. One of the things I've always liked about Billie's lyrics is how thought-provoking they are for me. They give me ideas but leave me the freedom to explore what meanings I want to attach to those ideas. However, Green Day's music has always been easy to listen to just for fun, too. Thought-provoking but with a sense of fun - that's the kind of music I like best, and they haven't disappointed me yet.

my point exactly. as i read through these new lyrics i dont find any substance in them. like a bunch of words that are supposed to have a point to them, but actually add up to nothing. it's so set in stone that i can't find a way to come up with my own meaning. for god's sake, american idiot had more of a good plot than this album. they say there's acts and that there's characters, but as far as i can tell, there's not one true story line to be told.

Jimmy > Christian

American Idiot > Know Your Enemy

always.

(to Ila Reto)

I can understand what you're saying, but we should all wait til we can fully listen to the album :)

we've only heard what, a song or two, some demo clips, and maybe some live versions?

and I agree, American Idiot > Know Your Enemy

the impact of that song will never be beat by any other song

Music videos themselves have very seldom anything to do with meanings of the songs it's made onto. That's very general, so I don't really think that Know Your Enemy's video would be shit, it's just OK. It's good video to get the band recognized, like, when random people sees randomly couple of seconds of this video, they can easily see whose video it is. It really is nothing amazing, but we shouldn't really care of music videos instead of the music itself.

i dont need to be bought by guitar riffs and an angel voice to be persuaded to like an album.

the thing with you people is that you say "you have to hear is before you can judge it", yet hearing it is only 25%.

If the lyrics are shit unsatisfactory, no amount of fancy strumming or melodies can make up for the other 75%.

Yea, it's just my opinion, and maybe i do want to rant about it because it's leaving me frustrated with them and myself.

"thats all".

So lyrics make up 75% of whether you like a song/album or not?

I've rate it at about 55%, music and singing style making up the other percentages. Like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't identify with those lyrics, I've never put a gun against anyone's head or anything, but the music is absolutely brilliant, and the singing is top notch. Which is why it's one of my favorite Queen songs... I do like a lot of the lyrics from 21CB, far as I can read, and they do make sense, though I can't identify with all of it. But I won't get a full picture of this album until I hear the music with them.

yea, it's like, y'know i really dont know anymore Angie. im confused about everyting.

im losing my passion for everything. i dont even listen to the old albums now, cuz im just like "whatever" with everything even in my personal life.

and now im embarassed for announcing that to the whole forum.

:ermm:

i just need something i can relate to right now. to be like "yea, somebody does get it, im not as alone here as i thought"

from the beginning back when i got into the band, i felt like i could relate to Jimmy, and even though looking back that was stupid of a 13 year old,

it made sense then, and it makes even more sense now.

i got that throughout every album, be it 39/smooth's I Was There to Nimrod's Worry Rock to American Idiot's Are We the Waiting.

But this album? no. it just doesn't do it for me, and i pray to the gods of lushotology that it didn't have to be this way.
