Bryn
I think this video, like the song, has two levels - the stuff you talk about, and then the personal angle. From the personal level - the enemy within - this video screams paranoia. There's the big, beautiful sky, but the band is trapped inside this concrete wasteland, isolated, surrounded by perimeter fencing and barbed wire, under all kinds of scrutiny. The cameras remind me of that line from Rock and Roll Suicide - 'you're watching yourself, but you're too unfair'. In the midst of it all, this voice fighting to be free of constraint - when the shadows ignite, it's rocket-launching out of that dark place on the demon-flames.It does have a lot of Paranoia. I felt that too. Sometimes it is a bit hard not to be that way in today's society. I think the song does it's job. The whole "Start thinking about what your enemy is, and how you are going to fight that enemy and get free." It gets the wheels rolling.I'm feeling the video a lot more now after reading these two interpretations! I 'thought about it' a little bit, but I guess I didn't think deep enough, which is actually unusual for me, haha. Normally I over-analyze and over-think every little thing. Thanks for making me appreciate the video more than before, you two! =)I think justcause was really a lot more eloquent indeed! You are welcome though.

This is reading WAY too much into the video. There aren't two levels, and the security cameras are just there. They're not "the enemy;" in fact, they seem like more of an afterthought to try to add some kind of depth, but the idea never actually goes anywhere. The video doesn't "[scream] paranoia" either; there really isn't anything paranoid about it except the halfhearted attempt to make something of the security cameras. It's just a simple video, with the band playing by some fences and random shots of their surroundings. It doesn't explore the meaning of the song, and the set isn't some overarching metaphor for the state of our country. Most likely, they just thought it looked cool. a knothole resident
Just got done watching the TV airing of the video. OMG?! MTV actually played a music video?! How surrealistic is that?! God I fucking hate this channel and what its degenerated into. I endure the torture of watching some superficial reality show about teens boasting how rich they are and I felt short changed the way MTV marketed this video. They was no hype, no buzz, no making of video. It was just "uh hey guys, instead of playing reality shows constantly, heres a music video or something. enjoy" WTF was that? Back in the 90s and even early 00s MTV used to premire videos as if it was a monumental event. Theyd played the bands older videos, air specials and even concerts. MTV didnt even attempt to market this band like they used to. The biggest insult was how immediatly after the video, it transistions to another shitty reality show nobody gives 2 fucks about. Thanks MTV for refuling my rage on how much you dont give a shit about your core audience and pander to a generation of materialistic brats. Remember Buzz Clips? Alternative Nation? 120 Minutes? WHERES THE FUCKING MUSIC?! I apologize for my outburst. I really needed to vent my frustration how lame this station has gotten over the past decade. I grew up with MTV since 1981 and watching it decline depresses me. Green Day was an MTV staple and they would bend over backwards to promote anything they were involve in. This was sad beyond beliefe. This is not a thumbs up, this is a middle finger to Green Day fans, music lovers, and people that remember how MTV was a network dedicated to MUSIC and ONLY MUSIC! There I go, being critical again.I, too, am happy when Tre bangs on things. (Also, I have never known how to type the accent on an "e," despite having taken French for four years. Go figure.) I was not planning on reading anything into the video when I watched it. I just hit play. The feelings I got from it are what I got. The meanings I got are the ones I saw. So people are definately within their rights to say I, or we, or however many of us, are reading too much into it. I don't feel I am, and so I stand by what I said initially. I do respect other opinions; you're certainly entitled to yours just as much as I am to mine. I just really don't think the video was meant to convey any of that. It's great that you took all of that meaning away from it, but I think most people, sadly, will be bored (including me).
a knothole resident
Furthernote, this is probably the only time well see it on MTV cause it will be lost in a sea of of realty shows. Know your Enemy should be about the collapse of MTV since they solidified how they much they care about this band.

I was interested in the discussion actually. It is a bit sad that people may find it boring. I think once people see the whole picture, as in hear the whole album, there may be more there. I'm not sure if you brought up the whole album to refer to the KYE video, the song, or both, but when I heard the whole album at the Fox, it was pretty magical. Starbug
I saw it tonight on my big screen, and I really liked it. It brought it out a lot more, accentuated the special effects and just overall improved the experience WAY over the internet version. It was bigger, louder, brighter, more fun. I really liked it a lot better than I did the first time I saw it on the intrawebz. I give it a 7/10 instead of a 5/10 that it got before lol

Starbug
OH I GET ITBAHWhy am I such an idiot. I thought there was gonna be a small special on like the process of them making the music video. Sorry hahaha.I didn't record it. My on demand crap can do everything BUT let me put it on the internet or put it on a CD or something and upload it :CI think there should've been a bigger deal over it, definitely. Here here!I spend money on their shit, and they in turn spend my money on SHIT. A giant, smelly, rotting turd of a video.By the way, we need our own thread. We do magical things with our banter. You do horrible things with your banter. Everything you post is hateful. Everything. It's fine to not like to video, but they don't owe you a damn thing. If you're so upset about it, write them a letter or burn their cd's in protest, but stop being so damn mean. You've repeated the same opinion, over and over, in different hateful packages.Great isn't it? I taped it, I'm making a thing called a Green Day capsule of 2009. I'm recording TV appearances, live clips, musical guests, ect. It'll be all on this one tape (well as much as it can fit) That's a great idea lol I've got everything so far on DVR, so when the time comes to erase it (which I'm gonna keep it on there as long as I can) I'll be able to transfer it all over to video, or who knows, maybe i'll have a digital recorder by then! \Oh, and it's only gonna keep getting better! Green Day are gonna be everywhere, and I say giggity giggity to that
