"Know Your Enemy" Music Video

Right i've watched it 3 times and i think im now ready to give my comments and opinions on the video .

Firstly , yes I was over the moon excited that GD is BACK! Yes the first time watching it was awesome ... just because its green day!

But after watching it a few more times, that novelty has worn off, and i see the video for what it is.. which is nothing more that the run of the mill "performance video" with lackluster filming and basically nothing to capture the audience with, except for the haphazardly thrown in fire.

Let me refer to this quote:

"And the video's simplicity carries over to the album. After all, as the first single of a huge album, this thing could've been a special-effects enhanced, green-screen infused trainwreck. But instead, it's powerful and straightforward: Here's Green Day. They rock. Watch them do so. When the band is this good and the music so fist-pumpingly raucous, there's really nothing else you need to say"

Ok , there is alot to be said about simple and powerful , but this video was neither. I was expecting something mind-blowing , hard hitting and sadly this didnt reach my expectations at all. Just because a video has green day in it, does not automatically make the video awesome.

I didnt really drill the message of "do you know your enemy in" , yes despite the repetitive lyrics, the video did nothing to add to the song, in fact this video could have been the music video for any number of songs.

Plus it was far from "simple" , the complicated angle switching bothered me, If they wanted to go for the performance video route , they should have kept it centered on THE PERFORMANCE . The angles distracted and IMO did not enhance the song. Yes they cut to surveillance footage, and government conspiracies ... BIG DEAL. The video didnt do anything but show the obvious... but i guess the song is kinda that way too

IMO a good music video should ENHANCE the song, it should COMPLIMENT IT, it should give the band a chance to go all out . For example AI did just that, it drove the message of AI home, it was in essence AI the song translated in to a video. KYE video fall flat on that. Yet AI was not overly complicated that it took away from the song, it showcased it.

KYE is a boring video. And the fire at the end was kind of a joke the way it was filmed. This video could /should have been so simple that it blew our minds.

I didnt feel the energy of the song in the video.

But i guess in a way the song was somewhat like the video, both were repetitive , and somewhat boring .

I watched the american idiot video right after, and after seeing it for the 100th time , i STILL love that one.

Anyways, I love Samuel Bayer, BRING THE GUY BACK! He had vision, he was genius.

I really like your take on the video. :) I agree with you on your take of the music video not being simple, that it should enhance the music, and how it is kinda boring. I will say though that the first time watching the video, I was pretty annoyed of the camera angles and it just being a boring video. After watching it several times though, I got more excited because of how much the director actually put in it. I think it was the little things that the director put in that make this video good. At the same time though, the unnecessary camera angles are too much. It really stops people from noticing the things that are almost symbolic and complementary to the music.

I really didn't like Sam Bayer.

I mean most the stuff he did with green day was incredible (although I gotta say not a fan of wmuwse (except for the band's bit(except that Jason was in it) and jos)

...But I just personally have something against him

thanks i added this about the video:

you know what , actually the song was kick ass, it was a fistful of energy, it was anger and angst and being sick of your enemy, it was violent, it was gritty. Its about striking back, bringing down the foreman. Its about rebelling, breaking out!

But did the video bring forth these images .. NO! it did not , instead it HID behind the song. wtaching the video, did it make you want to start a revolution ? absolutely NOT, and IMO that means it fails

*squee* So I have seen the video and I really like it. I think it suits the song really well. It has that 'caught on camera' look about it. All of the security camera's and lights added to it imo, it kinda looks like the are at the border of somewhere *shrugs*

And to be honest, it has all I want from a GD video, the music and the guys actually playing, none of this artsy fartsy bullshit.

Yeah, I don't know why...I think it's just me being silly about it...I mean I really do think the stuff he did with Green day was amazing (besides what i already said)

He...just annoys me I guess... :/

That is true. I really thought the point of the music video was that Green Day is doing a kick ass performance and it should make you sing a long or watch in awe. The images would be pushed back a bit but I think it was pushed too far back so it kind of weakened the video.

Honestly, I liked it a lot better than I thought I was going to after seeing the preview on CBS. I thought it was bad ass, and showed the band really having a passion for what they're doing in the video. Which is just them playing their music that they have poured blood, sweat, and tears into for the last four and a half years. While it may not be "the best GD video EVERRR!", I thought they matched the simplicity of the song pretty well with the video. Stop with all this "Bayer would've done a better job" shit. That was during a different era of the band's history, and that era has been over for quite some time now. Had they used Bayer, or Bayer's style for the video, a lot you would say "they're just trying to mimic the success of AI" or "I wish 21cb would have it's own style, not a AI clone, blah blah blah." In fact, that's one of the reasons I do like this video. It resurrected my faded belief that the band still enjoys what they do, and mainly play the music that they want to play, and organize the video the way they want it oragnized. Whether you like it or not is nothing more than a bonus to them. Not every video has to be a special effects galore. I like the rawness and attitude of the video, and how the fire behind them doesn't look too fancy and blown out of proportion. Just BOOM! There it is. In your face and raw. The band knows what they're doing a little better than some of you give them credit for. They made it this far, didn't they?

Wow everyone seems to be so divided on this, it's hurting my brain.

I havn't watch it, waiting for it to premier on MTV over here.

I think I might have to watch it over and over again before I make my mind up about it. But whatever, it's fucking Green Day and I'm excited they are baacckk.

Well, I already posted my thoughts on the KYE video (a few pages back; I'm sure no one wants to hear them again), but I would like to say, in light of several comments about the WMUWSE video: I thought that video was one of Green Day's best! Maybe it's because I'm a huge fan of Jamie Bell, but I thought that video was really powerful, and I liked the different interpretation it gave the song.
