I'm a little disappointed with KYE, but this is getting me excited again!

What a crap review, I dont recall seeing much about the most important part of the record..the MUSIC.

The music, message, and lyrics are all equally important to an album, especially to a band like Green Day. And there was an entire paragraph on the music.

the last bit is confusing though, but I'm glad he thinks it's cohesive

By the last bit, I think they're saying it's ironic that Green Day sings about the problems of America when they are, in a way, living the American dream. I think they seem to mean that "only in America" could a snotty little punk band rise to the position of fame that Green Day holds now. I don't happen to agree with that, but I do see their point that Green Day has been able to be successful in this culture and economy we have. However, I think they've been successful in spite of the corporate mind-set of Warner and the music industry in general - not because of it.

You think Warner have been trying to hinder their success?

You think Warner have been trying to hinder their success?

Not at all - I think Warner is all in favor of their success - now that they've proven themselves. What I'm talking about is historical - the way they went from Lookout to Reprise, despite the fact that, even back then, there was a music-industry formula for new bands with a certain image (genre-specific of course). Green Day did exactly what they would have done if they'd stayed with Lookout (except with better equipment and more money - supplied by Warner, I know), so that's why I say they succeeded in spite of the American way. They didn't change their music or their attitudes to fit in with Warner's expectations (IMO - I know some will disagree).

The writers for The Guardian are awful

Or at least, they were

But that was a good read.

i thought the opposite. i like the Guardian's writers but i didn't like this review. i particularly didn't like their little jibe about the American Dream. i think it was very short-sighted of them to state that Green Day's success doesn't sit well with their criticism of the American Dream given that most commentators who criticise the American Dream do so on the basis that, although some suceed, the majority are left behind!

This is a great review!

I don't know why they took off one star...they didn't seem to have anything negative to say about the album.

AHHHHHH....I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it!

*breaks out into Pointer Sisters and dances with joy*
