Boston
What's the point? Are you saying if I don't talk for a whole day, gay people will have more rights? It symbolizes the silence that gay people have in society due to their lack of rights. Its more of a personal way to reflect on a gay person's "heritage" than to gain rights, which is why I don't think straight people get it/should participate. The 17th is my birthday and I'm having a party. I'm going to be silent for some time during the day, but I can't be for the whole day because of school and the party.
mitzymoo
It can't be a great idea if it doesn't serve a good purpose. If it doesn't change anything, how can it be worth it?I'm not disagreeing with the fact that gay people should have the same rights as everyone else, but how does not talking for 1 day help that? It doesn't make any sense, it doesn't change anything. You said it might have an impact. An impact on whom? What kind of impact?how does not eating for one day change anything? everyone does the trocaire 24hr fast its basically the same thing not eating not talkingthe more people who know about it the more impact it will have and therefore hopefully change will come about as everyone should realise that everyone has equal rights no matter what or who you are
Nele
I'll try to do it. For Billie Joe. Seriously?
Boston
I'll try to do it. For Billie Joe. Seriously, Billie Joe has a wife and two sons. He's not gay, and bisexuality is something that gains celebrities attention. It symbolizes the silence that gay people have in society due to their lack of rights. Its more of a personal way to reflect on a gay person's "heritage" than to gain rights, which is why I don't think straight people get it/should participate. Can that quote be put in the main post so that people can (presumably) read it and stop asking questions as to what rights gays will gain by being silent? Princess Consuela
Hey guys just wondering if any of you are going to be doing the day of silence. It is april 17th. It's basically where you don't talk all day. I'm doing it to honor my gay friends, myself , david Bowie and Billie Joe ARmstrong(BI Power!).Praying for them could have more impact than not talking all day Call me ignorant, but that's the first time I hear about the Day of Silence and I don't really see the point of it. pooldude256
I'll try to do it. For Billie Joe. Well since Billie Joe won't even be doing this, it makes no sense. No offense, I just don't think Billie would care enough. He isn't gay, he says he's bi. To my knowledge he has never dated a guy, right? I'm sure he would be the first to tell you not to do something dumb like this, and to more actively get involved if you really are for gay rights. Seriously, how does it seem rational at all and do any good to society in any way if you don't talk at all for a day? Unless of course you are Miley Cyrus... Can I have sex with another lesbian instead?Only if you tape it.

Samantha
I remember in high school there was a huge following for this since our Gay/Straight Alliance group was a big dealI always thought it was kinda pointless, but I guess it shows resiliance ?I never did it but I found that people would use it as an excuse not to answer questions in class and stuff, even though they weren't actually supporting the cause, which I found to be really disrespectful
Yussef
Only if you tape it. That goes without saying. If you can do it silently.Damn.On a more serious note, I don't think I'm going to contribute for this day. I obviously support gay rights, but I hardly think it's going to make much of a difference if I don't talk and I'm at school anyway so that makes it tricky. Did you really just say that ?Thats like saying whites had no right to march with blacks during the Civil Rights Movement, even though they were all fighting for equality.Maybe you should think about what you say before you say it
billie-joe-geek72
It's huge at my school. There was a meeting for it, but I doubt I'd be able to go a whole day without speaking.
Dai.
as everyone should realise that everyone has equal rights no matter what or who you areAnd you think people will realise that by not talking for 24 hours?I'm sorry but if we're to fight for equality, the solution is not keeping your mouth shut for 24 hours. That's not going to change anything.A huge march all over the world would be a much better way to fight for equality. Seriously, this day of silence thing is epically retarded. Chad is Rad
Umm, I don't get it. What's the point? Are gays going to be treated equally because we don't talk for a day? I don't know, it seems pretty pointless to me, so I'm not going to do it...Plus that's my cousin Jennifer's birthday, it's a time for partying, not being quiet all damn day. Peace and Rainbows
yeah i know it's kinda pointless but there's a fucking party afterwards with lots of food, it only goes on till four.
Chad is Rad
Seriously, Billie Joe has a wife and two sons. He's not gay, and bisexuality is something that gains celebrities attention.Um...what do you mean that it "gains celebrities attention"? Last I knew, he was bisexual. He did write the song "Coming Clean", and I've seen a video of him making out with a dude...But then again straight people tend to make out with the same sex when they're drunk...maybe Billie was drunk, I don't fucking know... Hermione
I can see the point to this, but since no one does it (or has even heard of it) in this country it would be rather pointless for me.Seriously, Billie Joe has a wife and two sons. He's not gay, and bisexuality is something that gains celebrities attention.I really don't think when he said he was bisexual he was doing it "for attention", he was speaking candidly and honestly about his feelings on the subject. Have you read the interview? I think his honesty was admirable. And being married doesn't stop someone being bisexual.

I'm like the Malcolm X of gay rights at times. Straight people don't know what the struggle is like, and the day of silence is a day in which gays reflect on all of the suffering they've endured during the gay rights struggle. Its like praying for a dead guy you didn't know. I know the way it sounds, but its the way I feel. Straight people should march in the marches and help out and all that, but why should they reflect on suffering they haven't suffered?
