pattifan
Also from Playbill, an interview with Berkeley Rep artistic director Tony Taccone.Brief Encounter with Tony TacconePlaybill.com: So what is the status of American Idiot right now?TT: Well, the status is really good. (Laughs) Any way you look at it, the status is really good. They're certainly in the process, as we all are, of planning for the next incarnation of the play. The intention is certainly to bring it to New York. How it gets there is still a conversation to be. In New York, it's always a question of space. So it looks like they're waiting for a theatre to open up.There's more in the interview, including how the project wound up at Berkeley Rep. There are a few shows closing in January, so more spaces will be available after that. I'm hoping for Spring!
pattifan
Addams Family starts its out of town tryout in Chicago soon and it'll be clear then if it's the next Producers or next 9 to 5. If the latter, American Idiot will want to come in before the Tony Awards deadline (early May, probably) to qualify for the Best Musical Tony. There are some good candidates for appropriately-sized theatres with currently underperforming shows: the Nederlander (the Neil Simon plays, former home of Rent and in a neighborhood that befits American Idiot), Music Box (Superior Donuts) and Jacobs (if the new cast of God of Carnage doesn't bring in ticketbuyers). Sarahnade.
^That would be amazing if it got nominated in the Tony Awards. CrimsonRegret
Going to see this in NYC is just another reason I should visit! I would love to see it [again] there! Is there anyone that is planning on seeing it on November 12th?
pattifan
STOP THE PRESSES!Literally 2 hours ago, the Neil Simon Plays (Brighton Beach and Broadway Bound) announced they were closing, meaning the Nederlander theatre will be vacant in a few weeks. Provisional Closing for Neil SimonInteresting tidbit: Ira Pittelman, one of the producers of the Neil Simon plays, is a lead producer of American Idiot. If AI goes into the Nederlander, brace yourselves for a reference to Rent in every single fucking review. Someone said Minsky's and Catch Me If You Can were already eyeing that space. Maybe AI could get in on it too. I'm not sure how I feel about the inevitable Rent references though. Maybe the reviewers will exhibit some degree of self control and keep it to a minimum. Or, you know, maybe not.
GDM
The Rent references to AI started the day people saw the AI set. With Lizzie Borden the references to Spring Awakening just wouldn't stop because the show used microphones.... Just like we did 20 years ago when the show was first done, long before Mayer decided to remake SA into a rock musical. No matter what, brace yourselves for the references until you want puke. Anyway, the Jacobs would be great, but if the show at the Nederlander is closing soon, then I bet AI has a good chance of getting in there by Spring. And as I've said before, I have couch and floor space for sane folks who need a place to crash if they come to NYC to see the show. This is all very exciting. I know I was critical of the show, but I can't wait to see it on Broadway.

Stirring up bad blood out of nowhere because a frigging Neil Simon play, closed??? Is he serious? How many frigging times does Neil Simon need to be on Broadway? And yes, the Kuti play will be great, that's why AI needs to work out the emotional depth of the show. Oh, and I like how he's spying on here and quoting the Pittelman comment.Ugh. I hate Broadway. But yes, very excited about this.

I suspect that will be happening a lot more often once it hits Broadway.Edit: The quote wasn't happening.Yes, which probably means I should keep my thoughts to myself and post only happy things like everyone else does. Haha. I'm sure no one gives a crap about my opinion anyway. Still, I can't believe how that article is trying to stir up the old guard for nothing. I critique because I love. That piece, while nice in one way because it probably means Pittelman is going for it, is slyly trying to stir crap up. Anyway, that's how it goes. M0rre7
Taken from http://www.nme.com/news/green-day/48164The singer [billie Joe] said he'd also like to bring their musical 'American Idiot' over to the UK at some stage."We'd love to bring it to London, it'd be great," he said. "We'd have it right next door to 'Thriller'."The production, which features the album in its entirety as a soundtrack and songs from their current album '21st Century Breakdown', has already been staged at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California and the band are hoping to bring it to Broadway in New York. Also, Incendiary Girl told me today that another show called Million Dollar Quartet is going into the Nederlander and not AI, so Mr. Broadway.tv can stuff his innuendo down his throat... and he can quote me on that! http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/the...er-theatre.html
sallysimpson
on and off topic -- I'm desperately looking for a ticket (one, only one) to the 7 pm AI show on November 15. If you know of anyone, send them my way.Oh, and I too am happy to have folks crash at my place when AI hits broadway -- I have a couch and a bed w/trundle. : ) You just need to be NYC self-sufficient.
