GDLoT
None of them got nominated. darn. are they done announcing them all?
Abbey.
Im no broadway queen but i would have liked to see a nod to Tom Kitt for what he accomplished with this music. But I had a sinking feeling that whoever comes up with these nominations would not have been able to appreciate how he created something so new out of the AI album. Bummed for Tony Vincent as well, I think he is the perfect embodiment of St Jimmy. Book for Michael Mayer and Billie Joe would have been amazing but again I can understand why the Bway peeps dont see what they accomplished. We do and we are lucky. They can blow it out their broadway arses.
lizziebix
I'm still happy they got the Best Musical nomination. At least they weren't completely shut out.

GDM
The show's competition for Best Musical is: Fela! Memphis Million Dollar Quartet Wagers anyone? I think Fela is going to win. It's the feel good musical of this season and the director is beloved of B'way. We'll see.
Abbey.
OMG am I this is massive news. Seriously being nominated for best Musical is a big deal and its just going to be amazing for the band, I am so happy for them, so proud Might actually cry a little for them too You are right JAX...yay for them for a best musical nod...no sense in getting bogged down in what they didnt get recognized for. This is an AMAZING accomplishment. Wowee.
GDM
AND Enron not being nominated for best play???? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. Actually, Enron has gotten great reviews and it's a hit. Steven hogget, michael mayer and tom kitt were absolutley robbed. ROBBED. I am fuming right now as I type this. I think the tony voters dont like commercial stuff. I am convinced of it. And what about Johnny gallagehr and tony vincent??? I also think you have that backwards about commercial stuff. TONY VOTERS LOVE commercial stuff. And American Idiot doesn't really fit into their definition of Broadway. But, on the other hand, it was really tough year for Musicals. One of the better years by far, in my opinion. I am very surprised that Mayer and Kitt didn't get anything... but look on the bright side... luckily, neither did that awful Addams Family (except for original score, which just shocks the hell out of me, even if American Idiot wasn't eligible). Oh, and this is the reason why at the end of the day, I dislike Broadway. You are right JAX...yay for them for a best musical nod...no sense in getting bogged down in what they didnt get recognized for. This is an AMAZING accomplishment. Wowee. What Jax and Abbey said, truly.

monkeyfish
Oh well never mind. Fingers crossed for best musical tony, however i think Fela! (as T ann said) will probablt win. Some of the cast don't seem to be very pleased either. On tony vincent's twitter he is pretty upset. Aspen's twitter also.

I hope American Idiot wins, but don't expect much from the Tonys is all I can say. I will be pleasantly surprised and happy when American Idiot wins!! HoneyDo666
Tony Vincent was robbed. Having seen some videos, I completely agree! He is St. Jimmy body and soul!
lizziebix
My heart wants them to win, but my head says "No way!" AI just doesn't "fit" the NY Theatre vision. Which is really too bad that they are so slow to change. But at least they got the nomination. I know, I know, everyone always says its an honor just to be nominated even if they don't win (BS). But it really is a honor and they, and we, should all be very proud of their accomplishment. Besides, maybe they'll win Oscars instead someday!! HoneyDo666
Fela! got a terrible review from the NYT, I think. Aren't they basically the be-all-and-end-all of New York culture?
GDM
Fela! got a terrible review from the NYT, I think. Aren't they basically the be-all-and-end-all of New York culture? Yes, but at the same time, it's the Tonys and Bill T. Jones is a Broadway legend... so... I dunno. Commercially, American Idiot has a better chance of going further in terms of touring and stuff, so thinking about it again, and considering Million Dollar Baby and Memphis, American Idiot will be the most "successful" of the shows. So, it still has a good chance of taking it. But like I said, I will be pleasantly surprised when American Idiot wins!

I was at first just stunned that Tom Kitt wasn't nominated, and then I thought part of the reason I can SO appreciate what he did is my familiarity with the music he started with. The 3 noms they got are great and, in my opinion, all 3 are very well deserved. But it is disappointing that more of the individual contributions weren't recognized. justcause
There's always a contradiction going on with awards stuff - like, the movie you love doesn't win an Oscar and you go 'the Oscars are full of shit anyway, the people who decide these things are close-minded, up themselves, have an agenda, whatever'. By that logic, why would you want an award from people you have no respect for in the first place? But you put that little statuette up there for grabs, and people want it - they want to be judged by their peers and rewarded. It's bollox, imo. You can take your reward from the people you work with and what you create with them, and the audience that receives it, which to my mind is the truest way - or you can set store by people who are measuring one performance against another. If American Idiot is successful with audiences, if it's moving hearts and minds, that's a much bigger thing than any award.
Tripe
Very true. I do think a Tony nomination and win would be of great significance to the actors in American Idiot, though. I thought Tony and perhaps John would be nominated at the very least. Angeline, I meant to comment like two pages ago that your comparison of Theo Stockman's solo part on Holiday to the Joel Grey role in Cabaret was spot on. If American Idiot is successful with audiences, if it's moving hearts and minds, that's a much bigger thing than any award. Sometimes, maybe rarely, they get it right. Well, sort of anyway. Case in point was AI (the album, not the musical) winning several Grammys and most recently, 21CB getting best rock album despite its weaker-than-hoped-for sales performance. It's always nice to be recognized by your peers for a genuine accomplishment -- and perhaps that's the key word here: "peers". I think 5 years ago if anyone said that a pop/punk band from the East Bay would collaborate on a top-selling Broadway show based on one of their albums, many of us (theatergoers or not) would have ROFL our collective asses off. But I suppose part of being punk is coming out of nowhere and redefining what some part of life or even popular culture is all about.....and now here we are. Kudos to Green Day, the creative team, and the cast -- whatever the hell happens at the firkin' awards show.

And while I agree with you, every actor/director/writer, etc. still wants recognition. But ultimately, you are right, it's the hearts and minds that matter. plaid ducky
I was hoping for more nominations just so the show will have more staying power on Broadway. The sales have been dropping and if it doesn't win Best Musical, I can see it close come Fall/Winter. And I love the show! It's just that, at the end of the day, it needs to make more money.
