Circa Warning Era

Billie Joe: *on phone* Did you get my new record though? Oh, oh yeah it is kind of a Sum 41 rip off

Haha, nice. I think I remember hearing him say that on something... Egos and Icons, I think it was called?

I don't care if Green Day copied other songs or not. I hate when people do that. Fuck all haters! They don't have anything better to do then comment a song that sounds like another song. To me when I hear a song that sounds similar I end up liking the song.

this thread is hilarious.

This happens ALL the time though (Jet's Do you wanna be my girl vs. Iggy pop's Lust for life anyone??). Green Day are inspired by these bands... they ADMIT this openly. It's not like they're trying to hide anything.

They're punk. In case no one has noticed, a lot of punk uses the same chords

.

Dum dums

In the case of the Foxboro Hot Tubs, that stuff was blatantly ripped off, I think lol

Once mtv even compared "Jesus of Suburbia" with Bryan Adams "Summer of ´69"...

Of course there are similarities between songs since there are so many out there. So who cares!?

Jet's entire discography is a rip-off, so no need to even mention them.

the sum 41 news is total bullshit, sum 41 were always trying to copy our boys, and theres a lot of artists who write songs and uses the same song titles as others...

But I always thought that Sum 41's Motivation sounded like She's a Rebel.

Technically, it wouldn't be 'Motivation sounded like She's a Rebel.' It'd be 'She's a Rebel sounds like Motivation.' Motivation was released in 2001, so it was first. Either way, those songs don't sound the same at all.

I was going to say the same thing, but was too lazy. Good work!

:o Those plagiaristic bastards!

In all seriousness, with a band like Green Day you aren't going to get any complex melodies. Because of this, there's a great possibility that some of their riffs..etc will sound similar to other artists work.

As far as I can see, they've not intentionally gone out to rape a song or any elements from one. So no, Green Day arent copycats.

Exactly. Music isn't infinite (unless you're Theolonius Monk), therefor, musicians are doomed to repeat something.

:o OMG I once made a thread almost just like this but it got merged.

anyway give me a minute to make up a couple new examples.

also as for song names, blink and GD bouth have songs called Don't Leave me

Billie has openly admitted Mr. Whirly from Misery was Ganked from a Replacements song I believe

The Kinks one always makes me laugh.

I'm surprised they didn't talk about Brain Stew being an obvious rip off of that one terrible Boston song.

Ohh. I love green day.

That's definitely something you only notice after you learn it. I would have never thought they sounded similar by just listening to them. I heard they recorded an albums worth of elvis costello covers while they were recording Nimrod... half the reason I even joined this is just in case it ever leaks, I wanna be the first to know :)

Things like this always make me laugh. Don't get me started on Oasis/Beatles :D

Yeah I was thinking the same when Noel Gallagher criticised Green Day for making a song similar to Wonderwall. He is a bit of a hypocrite given that his bands whole back catalogue rips off The Beatles in an unsubtle way. On the subject of Green Day being "copycats" I don't really see anything wrong with styling your music to sound similar to your influences.

Picture book and warning start out really similar.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them copycats or whatever but they didn't reinvent the wheel.

Agreed

Why would any one wanna sound like Sum 41?
