It's not like it's a love letter to Obama, or a love letter for Obama. They just put that out there, and it's their right. It's only one sentence. The rest is encouraging folks to go out and vote. I see nothing wrong w/ their statement.
Greenforaday101
yeah, no.i agree with the encourage people to vote thing, but them saying they strongly support Barack Obama is influencing other peoples' opinions.1) They have the right to their opinion just like anyone else.2) At this point I don't give a shit, if people vote for Obama just because Green Day is then fine, they're retarded, but at least they're not voting for McCain. I would have been 100% ok with them saying to get out there and vote, but to come off the bat and say that they strongly support Obama, is just hypocritical. Or I would have been ok if American Idiot had not been so politically biased.Personally, I think they should give the politics a rest.

They've never stretched the truth or given false information toward anything they've said. And these supposed sheep you're talking about are most likely not even voting age. But at the time, that's the way the felt. I'm sure they still do. That's up to them. The fact of the matter is, they aren't campaigning against McCain. They're supporting Obama. They never said to go out and vote FOR Obama. The just said to go out and vote. And as far as knowing people are going to follow them blindly? I hardly doubt that's what they're after. I've read and seen plenty of interviews with them where they simply said they wanted to get people to think. To get informed, and to think. Maybe saying they strongly support Obama will give people a bias towards him, but somehow I think it's more likely to get people to find out more if they didn't know much beforehand. Personally? I don't like Obama. I don't give a damn if Green Day strongly supports him. It doesn't sway me. I don't like McCain either, which is why I'm continuing to look into third party candidates. No such luck finding anyone I particularly like yet. Back to the point... if politics is something they believe in, and it definitely seems to be, they have every right to talk about it. They're not out there saying "Yeah, vote for Obama!" they simply support him. They're just out there saying "Go out and vote."

They're just out there saying "Go out and vote."No no, they have all the right in the world to support whoever they want, and they have all the right in the world to post this on their site. And by saying strongly supporting Obama, they are essentially campaigning for them. And they CAN do that.I was only claiming that it was hypocritical to call Bush supporters "sheep" while they are creating them themselves.Fact of the matter is, they KNOW they influence kids, they're not stupid. Honestly, why else would they post it on their site? For 8th graders everywhere doing surveys on the political views of punk rock bands? No, they aren't stupid. It may not be their main intent, but they damn well know there are "sheep" out there. Ever seen Bullet In A Bible? It may be their purpose to get people to be informed and make good decisions, but they sure aren't very good about being neutral about it.Basically, in 2004, there were probably a lot of kids who went with Green Day's views. It's been 4 years. Let's say your average Green Day fan is 16. Do you want to tell me that when these kids were 12, that they weren't influenced whatsoever by the Band? At 12 years old? Take a look at GDC... You see any McCain supporters here? All I'm claiming is that they do influence some kids---a future generation of voters---and it is reflected today just by the consensus views on GDC. Fuzz
Here's what i posted in the GDA comments, so I'll just copy it over here. (my comment to "Mallory" is a reference to comment #3 in case anyone is confused)I've been supporting Obama since he announced his candidacy in January 2007. I'm a total political junkie, i keep up with it like nobodies business. Have almost daily discussions/debates with my co-workers. I'm very certain about my decision to support Obama, have no problems defending that, and I'm glad to see the band also coming out and supporting him. Yeah, it's not a big surprise they'd support the Democratic candidate, but it's still good to hear from them. These guys are smarter than to announce their support in order to sway opinion, if they wanted to do that they would have been out there months ago. I think right now they just really care about getting people involved in understanding how powerful their vote can be. Mallory, it's sad to see that you're one of the cynics that doesn't bother voting. You think politics is bullshit? Politics plays a role in everyone's life, whether they think it's bullshit or not. And if you're not voting, then you're doing nothing to make any changes for the better. It's not always (or often) perfect, but it's the best thing we got to make a difference. Nova-Caine
In my opinion people that don't vote don't have a right to bitch about anything political. You waste your vote that's your choice. Your vote is your voice, use it.Green Day have a right to an opinion just the same as the rest of us on this board. As for the sheep that vote for someone because someone tells them too most of us here have voted the same way as our parents the first few times because that's what we've been brought up to believe is right. Inform yourselves, make a choice dependant on your research, i'm sure that's what these guys have done. I'm not American but know that John McCain scares the shit out of me and I don't want that man running the world. Do you guys realise how important your decision as to who you elect into office is for the rest of the world? Your leader is ultimately the most powerful man on the planet. It's not just the future of your Country that rests on the outcome of this election. If I could vote Obama would get my vote.

It's not just the future of your Country that rests on the outcome of this election. If I could vote Obama would get my vote.I'm guessing this is directed towards meAnyhoo I live in Louisiana... A historically Republican state. The latest poll has McCain having a "double digit" lead over Obama. Obama has no chance to win our statehttp://www.wdsu.com/politics/17823929/deta...no&psp=newsIf I lived in a "swing state" like Florida, then I would definitely go out there and vote (I'm not saying I'm NOT going to vote). And honestly, I'm not SCARED of either candidate. The President doesn't have as much power as everyone thinks.I just don't like either candidate. I'm entitled to that. I'm really not alone. I frequent many other forums, a lot of which are middle aged people, and most of them don't like either candidate either. And I am aware of voting for the "lesser of the two evils" but I'm not big on that one. Like I said, McCain has our state wrapped up anyway. I really hate the electoral college, I think it's total shit. Also, if you're being a "sheep" by following your parents, that's fine. Follow your parents. Don't follow a rock band. Let your parents guide you to a right decision if you're too young to understand how to make one.
check
^^^If there's a third party candidate whose policies you most identify with, you could always vote for them. Not that they have a shot at winning, but if enough people migrate from the dems or gop to support third party candidates, the major parties may modify their policies to bring those people back. Nova-Caine
No it wasn't directed at you I would have quoted someone if it was directed at anyone in particular. I know that people abstain from voting. I think in the UK only around 30% of the population of voting age did actually get off their backsides and voted last time. I totally understand that it's hard when there is little between who to vote for, especially in areas that are so predominantly one party or another and they vote for Loyalty rather than the good of the Country.I am not sure as to who I will be voting for next time. I am totally Labour but Gordon Brown will not get my vote and the Party really needs a major shake up before I consider voting for them again. The Conservatives will never change and will always come across like an Etonian shool boy, totally out of touch with working class Britain and as for the The Liberal Democrat Party they are just a waste of the air that we breathe. So I do understand. Maybe the ballots should be changed with an extra box that says I VOTE FOR NONE OF THE ABOVE and that could be registered to show the apathy that the western world is feeling towards its politicians.
