Green Day and the 2008 US Elections

american idiot wasn't green day entering into a new era of 'hey, now we're a political band." leave that to anti-flag.

american idiot seems to me more about feeling disillusioned, or as billie put it, about switching on the tv, seeing a war on the news, then seeing some adverts for viagra, then the war again, and just not knowing what the hell is going on. sure, it's definitely political in parts, like holiday, "zieg heil to the president gasman!", but just because they've delved into writing songs involving current affairs doesn't mean they have any obligation to document everything.

"it said home is where your heart is, but what a shame, 'cos everyone's heart doesn't beat the same; it's beating out of time."

the album may be political in parts, but i think it's more about lines like the one above; the jesus of suburbia is the main character, not bush.

sorry if i'm rambling; its one of my favourite albums of all time so i'm a bit all over the place when trying to talk about it !

I think they should shut the f up and play music. I dont give two shits who they support or dont support. I certainly don't go looking for my political knowledge from musicians.

why not, whats wrong with it?

i've gathered much of what i know from the simpsons, green day and anti-flag. not because they're 'preaching' anything; they're not, but because the subject matter was involved, i took an interest and found out more. nothing wrong with that, right?:)

Less of the political bullshit please.

That's been done to death. Get back to being Green Day. I thank you :)

i dunno.

people who write songs write about what is on their mind. if politics are on their mind, write about politics! if girl troubles are on your mind, write when i come around. both are equally excellent, because they are truly meant and felt.

Oh and by the way Billie Joe is NOT a registered Libertarian, he never has been, and he's never said or done anything to indicate he's a Libertarian. Some idiot wrote it on Wikipedia, but it's been removed from there now because it's not true.

Green Day are human beings, and as such they have as much right to comment on politics as anyone else. Equally they have as much right not to comment.

If they want to use their celebrity to promote a good cause like getting people interested in politics, or to promote their own views, good for them. If they don't feel so strongly and want to get on with music, good for them. They can do what they want.

If I want politics, i'll listen to The Clash. (even they knew that they couldn't change the world ) Politics and music just don't mix.

can't any subject make great music

Exactly. The best music comes from when people write about whatever they feel like, without restricting themselves. Politics should be no exception.

bit of a sick joke involving green day and the former drummer of blink 182.

What would have helped Travis Barker just before the plane crashed?

FHT - Stop Drop and Roll.

Thought of it meself. :ninja:

They 'should' be as outspoken or as not-outspoken as they want.

I guess I sort of agree. They're gonna do what they're gonna do. All of us have to go to bed with our own minds at night, and if they feel like they've done what they need to do (like all of us) then that's all anybody can ask, I reckon... if that made sense... Makes sense in my head, but that's not saying much  :geek:

I don't bother to quote, but I pretty much agree with Hermione on this subject, if they feel like being political, they should be political...

Oh, I was klling myself, "how did I not know this?", haha so that's been cleared and I re-edited the 1st post =]

^Cool. Haha yeah I assumed it was true too, but then I started doubting it and realised on Wikipedia there was no source for it or any other evidence anywhere. But like I said it's even been taken off Wikipedia now so I'm pretty much 100% sure it's not true :)

Well, Billie's said his piece on Obama. He's supporting him, and I'm sure Mike and Tre are as well. If (God willing) they are actually working on a new album, then they're probably too busy to make apperances and help campaign for Barack.
