Some people may have found them cute throughout their career :whistling:, but I hardly think the huge success of Dookie was built on how they looked- they weren't exactly hunks back then.

Surely their current appearance would appeal more to silly fans who only care about looks than their appearance during the Nimrod / Warning era anyway. They have improved with age! Judge for yourself.

Green day have never been handsome in the traditional sense but have always been attractive in a cute mischievous way. that was even more true in the Dookie days but i do agree that their image for AI did attract the teenies in their hordes. - Personally I prefer how they looked then - but maybe not the leopard-skin thong era !!

At the end of the day how succesful theyll be with younger listeners will depend on how appealing the music is to that age group.

I'm under 21 and I'll love it when Green Day's album comes out. Green Day tries to make their album for mostly everyone no matter what age anyway.

It was always their mischievious behaviour and nature that i loved in the early GD and the 90's. Armstrong never took himself seriously, i was very disappointed during the whole AI tour and the shift in attitude an dynamic of the audience, lets not forget Armstrong sticking his hand down his pants and getting naked onstage pre AI was conjured up by the man purely to get the crowd bk onside if he felt the show wasn't going particularly great, trust me no fucker screamed at him when he did it back then. laughed but never screamed. I always found him attractive through his lyrics the man isn't ugly but thats not what got me into GD

The whole attitude surrounding GD has changed and i've said it before as much as i love AI the album to me its a masterpiece, but seriously i hated the whole circus that went with it.

The next album will be whatever the boys want it to be, it will appeal to those who get it for the musical content regardless of age.

I agree with you. In my other post I was just saying that if teenies DO want to squee over Billie then they still could in the same way as with AI. The way these shallow fans act is extremely annoying, but hopefully this wouldn't ever affect the band's music.

You hit the nail on the head saying it was the circus that went with AI that was the problem. Not just from fans, but how they were promoted. Before I had access to youtube etc, all I had seen of them live was Bullet in A Bible. It is an unrealistic portrayal of a Green Day concert, cutting out many of the things that make them so great such as Knowledge and any pre-Dookie songs. Having only seen this and other sanitized versions of the band on mtv, seeing their old concerts and promtional appearances was actually quite shocking. It's a shame the record company feels it has to try to cut out the things that make Green Day what they are to chase new fans.

For me, it would be a good thing for them to lose these so called fans. It would only make them "less successful" if you measure success commercially, and it would remove the annoying element from concerts. Luckily, I don't think Green Day personally would give a monkey's if they lost them so their music will remain unaffected.

Trying to imagine the potential response to a Green Day record that doesn't exist, while I'm listening their new record which does actually exist but people say isn't 'real' - tbh, that's just one head-trip too far, lol!

I think it would more than anyone over 21 since AI with all the teenies and such :o

I think saying the majority of fans under 21 only go by looks is taking it a bit far, seeing as I was about 16 when I got into the band and looks never came into it. I've seen a lot of kids talking about FHT, and liking their music, kids that aren't all that into Green Day, so I think they'll still appeal to a younger audience with the new album, whatever it sounds like. I honestly don't think that looks mean as much as they used to. You only have to see how successful My Chemical Romance are to know that

I am 14 and got into Green Day when I was 11, and I never was one of the people to judge a band on their looks. And I don't know many people (if any) who would. They might not get so many fans who are about 10 or 11, but then that depends on the style of the album, but, I'm sure a lot of teenagers who used to love them but stopped as they went out of the spotlight will start listening again. Of course it does depend on how much they endorse the album, if they keep out of the spotlight more (which i can't see them doing) then maybe a lot of people won't bother to listen to them just cause they aren't on the radio every 5 mins. I am not wording this very well, so to sum up I doubt people will buy the album just because the members in the band are good looking, and it will bring in a lot of new listeners.

They will never top American Idiot. Their new album should be relatively successful though (if it ever comes out). Just like any album, it'll keep most of the original fans, lose some fans, and replace the lost with new ones.

Green Day has been particularly lucky, they've had 2 killer albums in their career that were considered some of the most successful ever. Most modern rock bands haven't done that. FHT is Green Day's way of saying: We're not done as a band, but we don't want our work shadowed by American Idiot.

I think the new album is going to just bring back all the old fans.

I don't think it will attract many new faces.

Also, I think the age demographic will be older such as 16+

I doubt it will bring as many younger pre-teens as AI did.

That would be a very good thing :)

And so do I.

I'm 16 and I will definitely buy their new album.

actually, I really really hope it doesn't attract so many younger ones

Like, if AI came out now, I'd feel like one of the older kids at the show

one of the older kids maybe, but not the oldest there.

green day have had a wide age range of fans since day one pretty much. and yes, some of the younger ones do seem obsessed with the guys looks rather than the music. but then theres enough of the older fans who go on about the way the guys look just as much. and some of them have way dirtier minds than some of the younger ones! every album has attracted new fans of all ages. not just AI. you might think the influx of new members was annoying after AI came out, but the same thing happened after Warning. we had the same kind of debates going on over the network as we have had over the tubbies. and no doubt we will see it all happen again after the next album.

the only way there would be any difference is if they put an absolutely dreadful album out and it totally bombed.

Seriously...who cares?

All i'm worried about is whether I like the album or not.

If this album produces radio and MTV hits like AI did, of course it will appeal to young listeners.

But yeah, I don't really care about that, it doesn't have any bearing on my opinion of the album.

i don't see why it wouldn't, hardly anyone likes a band solely for their image. i mean, a lot of music i like, i don't even know what the bands look like. maybe that's cause i don't watch mtv or things like that but i think most people like a band for their music.

21 is way too high, and yes, I'm sure they'll be able to as long as MTV and the like play it enough.

i hope the teenies don't come back saying that Billie is ''hawt'' but sadly they will...

i guess we'll have to wait until they're 60 years old to be without all the teenies around singing the new WMUWSE.

but we all know that they will be hot until they die ;)

and of course i'll buy the new album!

and all the other albums that come later (:

I never really understood threads like these.

Even with my favorite bands, I don't really give half a fuck how successful they are or not? If I like it, it's good. If I don't like it, it's bad. That's all. I don't care who else likes it.

I would want Green Day to be somewhat commercially successful is so I could see / hear more of them, and have more chance of getting to see them live all the way over here, but it would make absolutely no difference to how much I like them.

It's nice to see good bands get the recognition they deserve if they've earned it, even if it doesn't particulary matter to the band itself.

Unless they're putting out some terrible easy listening jazz shit they'll be okay.
