I've said this many times, but I honestly think young listeners (under 21), tend to focus on a band's physical appearance rather than their music. Like for instance, if a 13-yr-old girl were to see the members of Green Day on the new album's cover, she probably wouldn't buy the album because the band didn't look "hot enough" to her (which is sad).

So... do you think Green Day will be able to draw new [21 and under] fans attention? Do you think fans under 21 who have lost interest in them will regain it? I honestly don't know, so I think we'll just have to wait and see what the future holds for the band....

Mostly all mainstream albums will pick up new, young listeners. That's how music stays alive. I think the age of 21 is a bit steep though.

Which is why I was asking if people would think kids under 21 would buy the album (people under 21 were born in the late 80s' through now, so they still can't really appreciate good music).

However, I'm 17, and I'm one of the few kids out there that appreciates good music (don't look at my ava and start bashing me, though... please xD).

I'm just hoping kids want to listen to Green Day.

the younger generation, unfortunately, determines whether a band will be successful or not.

i want GD to shine again, honestly. i hope the kids' will embrace the band once more.

That's a bit of generalisation don't you think?

Most of them are like that (I was one of them, so I know).

If you remember all those icky/weird/pervy GD-related usernames at GDC back in 2006, you'll know what I'm talking about... *shudders*

If they make another American Idiot type album, there will probably be those emo teeny bopper people buying it. Older people wouldn't probably buy it, and maybe there old fans mightn't either?

Hopefully they don't....

I don't care for appearances, I care about the music. And I really can't relate to the music of the past 10 years or so.. only some of it.

Look at what kids are into these days Bands like Buckcherry, Papa Roach, Trapt.. and so on.

if Green Day were smart they would take a band like one of these on tour with them in support of their new music. Motley Crue are doing the exact thing with these three bands plus Sixx:A.M. and doing a festival with them. They're going to gain more new fans with their new material and by doing this festival.

well i havent friggin heard the thing so i cant say. i have no clue what their album is going to sound like so i dont know how i could answer that with any sort of validity.

HOPEfully people will recognize good music when they hear it, but the type of music that kids like doesn't bode well for that. that being said, most popular music is crap, it's not just "kids today"

I think one of the really cool things about Green Day is that they have such broad appeal. Different people enjoy them for different reasons. AI was in some respects a very serious album, but it also has very catchy songs, so it appealed to people who were interested in serious subjects and more adult music and also to anyone who wanted cool catchy tunes, whatever their age.

Unless Green Day strays away from writing great songs, I think their broad appeal will stay the same. The next album may not equal the huge success of AI, and frankly it would be nice if it didn't make such a huge splash, but it certainly might.

If muisc videos from the new album are played on MTV GD will get young fans.

I want this album to be a very big success, but I don't want it to be as huge as AI was in that there was every imaginable kind of merchandise item with a heart grenade on it. I just didn't like that. To me it detracted from the fantastic album that AI is.

Green Day ALWAYS put out great albums - not one of their albums is less than brilliant. I have a few teenage friends here and they have amazing taste in music, they are intelligent and know quality music when they hear it. I have a lot of faith in young listeners in general. I think they will embrace the new album because of course it will be brilliant with every song being great! I have no doubt about that at all, after all it is Green Day!

So my opinion is that the new album will appeal to the die hard older fans, and the young listeners will appreciate the new music and "discover" Green Day. It will be a much loved album like all their others I am absolutely sure.

Yes, it'll appeal to younger listeners - and older listeners alike just like all their albums do. Just to what extent will depend on the album itself. I think there's plenty of under 21s who bought American Idiot, moved onto other bands when Green Day dropped out of the limelight who will rush straight bak to them when the new album comes out. My son for instance loved American Idiot (and got into their earlier stuff) but now listens to other bands all the time. But he still asks me when the new Green day album is coming out. Teenagers may have drifted away but I'm sure many of them will be back and as someone said if the videos are on MTV there'll be plenty of new fans as well. The age of the band doesn't matter if the musics good and Green Day do have that fun childlike manner which is always appealing.

That's a cheap generalization.

I like MCR too. They're going to go down as the Queen of our time. Or maybe different. I mean, the guitar playing is nothing short of amazing, and the vocals are very sharp, and the music all together is extremely catchy. There's no denying they have their enemies, as far as fans go, but they are one of the most popular bands of our time.

I'm younger than you, and I know good music. You can doubt me if you'd like, but that doesn't change a thing.

I can be descriptive on how the music is good, and can make statements impossible to argue with.

Younger kids, like 10-13 year olds are going to pick up on everything either way. Chances are, it won't be as big in numbers as American Idiot, but it will pick up quite a few teenies. They won't stay near as long though.

What pissed me off about AI is that you could go up to most people who liked tracks from AI or had worn some AI clothes, and say something like, "Hey did you ever see the video for Welcome To Paradise" and they'd be confused. It bothers me when people don't dig into a band's history once they get really into new material.

For example, I just got into the White Stripes, and I've been digging into their past work a lot, and they're really starting to catch on with me.

Didnt Green Day themselves say that the next album would be themed on mid life crisis or something like that? Itll probably appeal to more mature people, yet a new trend will come in where the kids today think its "cool" to be acting like theyre middle aged or something xD

Anyway Im sure ill be buying the album, I really dont care whether the band are not shining or not im still gonna support them and buy the album (and probably half of their new merch too O_O)

Well, Billie Joe said that he was writing on what he was encountering in life, which was being middle aged.

Haha Pan i wouldnt hold my breath if i were you, not on this forum anyway, where its the cool thing to bash/hate almost everyone and everything. Anyway I seen a situation where someone read a line of an mcr song and said it was good, but they didnt know it was an MCR song, yet the second they found out it was all bashing them again. So the bashing's not about the music for sure.

Yeah exactly, and well it probably will appeal to everyone, but i can guarantee there will be kids going around thinking theyre having a mid life crisis or something, just watch

I know for sure that under 21's will buy Green Days next album because I know seven that are. I think that greenday will also pick up new fans with the release of this album because there is allways interest in new releases and people will hear the music being played and will buy it if they like it. I also know a lot of people my age that will be buying it who have loved Green Day for yonks and can't wait to get hold of it.

I don't honestly know if everyone will love the new album because I hav'nt heard it but I am looking forward to it.

If anyone, young or old, is stupid enough to only want to listen to music because of how the artist looks, who cares? There will still always be people of all ages who appreciate good music.

I'm sure GD would rather lose a few fans than compromise the honesty of their music to appeal to them.

Some people may have found them cute throughout their career :whistling:, but I hardly think the huge success of Dookie was built on how they looked- they weren't exactly hunks back then.

Surely their current appearance would appeal more to silly fans who only care about looks than their appearance during the Nimrod / Warning era anyway. They have improved with age! Judge for yourself.

Isn't this good enough for the teenies?!

Considering all the completely fug bands/artists who are popular right now, I'd say GD have a high chance of being on top of the world again. If we're basing this solely on their looks. If people were to strictly focus on the music, they would most definitely get a shitload of new fans. Point is, I really doubt their age will have anything to do with it.
