The Disappearing Boy
i think its possible. Not that its a bad thing, but I and quite a few others first got into green day through american idiot and i had never heard of them before, the same goes for most people. But if you look at american idiot, it is completely different to anything they have ever done, for a start it is a rock opera and deals with slightly more mature themes, (ok, perhaps they started that with nimrod), but bj and tre wear eyeliner, and they haven't done since, nor did they do so before, the guys used to wear the same clothes for each gig on the AI tour, meaning that the album had a particular look. Even the song structure and the way they wrote songs was completely new, the music had a different sound and most songs needed 2 guitars, the list could go on forever, but my point is that american idiot was very very different to anything else they have ever done. So, will, at the end of their careers, people remember them for just american idiot, or do you think that the guys will produce more records that will be just as big so that this doesn't happen.I think it is possible for either thing to happen, but either way i think that it has certainly put green day on the music map, even if they weren't before. GaraGD
I seriously hope that people wont just remember them as the guys that made an album fucking bush offThey're the gods of punk... I will remember cause of all their albums, the way each album had a different sound, the way they matured, all the things that made lmao
katie
alright gym class the last few years we would always listen to the radio american idiot or holiday would come on, no one noticedbrain stew or basketcase came on, everyone sang alongi think american idiot was overrated during the time it was popular shitty? no. overrated? yes. Viva La Junkpile
You have to remember that American Idiot was in NO WAY their biggest album; that would be Dookie. They had lived under the shadow of Dookie for years. Few bands have a chance to do this twice as Green Day have done-- most bands play it safe and stick to the same thing all the time, producing good, but nothing spectacular. Green Day work really hard, and love the music they do; it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this happens again.

NickD
i guess thats fair enough, but i guess what i meant is that i never remember them being huge before AI (i know they were when dookie came out but i was only 4 then!!)I can remember a few times Green Day were "huge" and on the charts:From Dookie: Longview, Welcome to Paradise, When I Come AroundYou want more? Maybe some from other albums not called Dookie? Okay then! From Insomniac: Brainstew/Jaded, Walking ContradictionFrom Nimrod: Good Riddance, Redundant (somewhat), Nice Guys Finish LastFrom Warning: MinorityFrom Others: Poprocks and Coke, Maria, I Fought The LawAll of these songs put them on the charts. Where on the charts? Different spots, sure, but all of these songs got a LOT of play-time on the radio and MTV. A LOT.
RebelofSuburbia
but either way i think that it has certainly put green day on the music map, even if they weren't before.Really, it was Dookie that put Green Day on the music map.I think that in the long run people will remember Green Day for songs like Basket Case, Longview and Good Riddance. Sure there might be the former teenies of today who'll go like 'Green Day? Oooh they did that September song right??' today and a few years from now. But the people who'll remember Green Day decades from now, are the ones that really have a love for music, the ones who'll remember the chords and the lyrics to the songs, rather than the color Billie Joe's hair was in the certain video. Boston
of course that will happen. Green Day were "The guys who made Dookie," and "The guys who sang 'Time Of Your Life" before American Idiot. I highly doubt they'll come out with something big enough to break the bonds of this one. They're getting up there.
RebelofSuburbia
^ of course people are gonna remember them doing American Idiot too. But I think in this thread they meant if Green Day will be remembered only for AI

GaraGD
Dookie putted Green Day on music map definitely... But till the release of AI, they werent such a big deal in musicEven with Dookie. Cause now all those people that listens to 50 cent's and whatsoever know them as the "American Idiot" band. And its true! Not that AI's better than Dookie, but that putted then on people's mouth definitelyAnd thats why a lot of people started saying they made comercial music (idiots), cause now they are more popular than they were with dookie or warning. But yeah, lotsa people gonna remember them cause of AI

SkippyNXC
I disagree... dookie made them HUGE... at least where I'm from... everyone had the green day things sewn on the backpacks, had on t-shirts, etc. brainstew/jaded again big deal (not as big as dookie but still played ALLL the freggin time) i remember when warning came out and i heard minority on the radio for the 1st time... ran out got that cd too... the station i listened to played these songs damn near 24/7i guess ur view on this is gonna depend on a few factors...1) your current age (if ur young u may not remember back during dookie)2) the circles u traveled in (i've always been into punk/alt-rock etc. so i guess i wouldn't have missed much)3) when u got into green day... (tho i admit i just recently started partaking in the online community, i've been a big fan of them since dookie)i think its amazing they got out of the shadow of dookie... that's pretty impressive... most groups/artists never accomplish that when they have such a huge hit! personally whenever i think green day the song basket case comes to mind before american idiot
randomness
Its true! Im not saying Dookie is bad! Dookie rocks my socks. But they werent as known as they are now with the release of AIyou were only 2 when dookie came out though, so how do you know dookie didn't make them as big as AI did? i don't know either, i was only 6, but no matter how big a record is it has to die down sometime. it can't stay that big for 10 years. they may have had just as many fans and attention as they did when AI come out, except those fans might have decreased over the years. AI was a much greater deal than Dookie was, at least here. She's always telling that they sold out, but shes a douchebag...
