midlfecrysis
oh my god... im starting to lose all my respect for green dayFunny, I just gained a whole lot of respect for them. They honored the song by John Lennen, and humbled themselves to be on a show they might otherwise not like or watch, for the soul pupose of bringing awareness to the crisis in Darfur to the masses. I truely don't believe it was to gain personal recognition. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't know much about Darfur. It doesn't seem to be televised alot on CNN or other news stations. I feel really ignorant because I'm 45 years old, and it took GD (as well as Bono of U2) to open my eyes to the crisis. So just imagine how many other people they have touched. You opened your eyes and your ears to what Green Day, U2 and Amnesty were saying. I'm the same as you in that I knew a bit about it, but not as much as I know now - thanks to all of this push for awareness. But these people that say Green Day are doing it for their own publicity/money/egos, whatever, haven't learnt a damned thing, and that is being dumb.I'm proud as punch of Green Day. Oh yeah and those people that hold on to something green day said 18 years ago to be law.OMG they are contradicting themselves. Gee when I was five I wanted to be a vet. When I was 20 I didnt. justcause
^exactly Mary, exactly. Same with you Maribel. and justcause, yeah what is with people here?I don't want to come across as being negative about people here - it's not the way I feel. One of the reasons that I really like this forum is that I come across every shade of opinion, from every age group - you don't learn anything by just listening to people who have the same pov as yourself, imo. When GD do something and a lot of people shit on them for it, it's good in a way - it's a reaction rather than inertia, it's the sound of people being forced to think about something they took for granted. Whether they then decide they like it or not, at least it's not an easy ride. Thinking of yourself as a fan is kind of a passive thing - it's 'you do that, and I'll stand there and cheer' - on the other hand, thinking of yourself as a human being getting challenged by someone's ideas is something else again, something you can make meaningful. You can let it change your life, or you can just rock out - best of all, you can do both!

People do grow up and mature, and your views on the world change. Especially when you have children. Although it doesn't look like I have, the way I abssess over Billie . I act like a teenie in that regard. Oh well, ya have to keep the spark going

fashionvictim86
I didn't even know they were fucking performing until like, a half hour ago. If I would have known that I wouldn't have went to Jersey last night with my bf and I would have made him watch it. lol
jaded fashion victim
I liked the fact that Billie Joe was low-key and in shadow a lot of the time, GD letting themselves be literally overshadowed by the images of John, Yoko, and Darfur. It reminded me - in terms of contrast - with the Billboard performance of Holiday, where there was this gigantic screen image of Billie Joe himself as he held that crutch over his head, trying to draw attention to the plight of maimed soldiers returning from Iraq. So, he shouted the message in his own words - he almost whispered it in John's; one way or another, he keeps on saying it. I look at stuff in this thread where people wonder if GD are living up to their expectations, and I think, fuckit - can't you see that GD are putting their hopes in you?For those who didn't see it in the context of the show, Green Day performed immediately after Sanjaya, the 'parody within a parody'. The contrast in tone couldn't have been more extreme to the goofy spectacle that proceeded them. Everyone else was showboating, Billie chose not to. I saw a harnessing of emotion in his face and heard frustration in his voice, like he was trying to will John's message to resonate. The audience at the Kodak seemed a bit stunned, they didn't bargain for profanity and a challenge to act.

teqi
well, i had to know what people on the Am Idol boards were saying and if they got the message. i should have known better. here is an example of why i had to get off the boards yesterday after posting why Green Day was appearingoriginal post: "Sigh. If you’re going to have someone do that song, WHY Green Day"someone's reply: It IS only 3 chords.. they would get lost on the other songs LOLas for today, there were some posts like "Green Day was there to simply promote their own career", etc.it also seems that most people completely missed the idea that they were there to support/promote a cause however, i did see that a lot of people posted that they'd just purchased the song from iTunes, so hopefully it did some good
*withoutadoubt*
Well, I didn't get to see it until late last night, but I loved the performance, I love the song, can't wait for the video now. I think it was definitely contradictory to the 'usual' American Idol performances, which makes it even more beautiful and touching and just about perfect, I think. Oh, and btw, I love the t-shirt! Thanks for the link Angeline.
