oh my god... im starting to lose all my respect for green day

Why? Green Day do whatever the hell they want, when they want, how they want, answer to nobody, and don't give a stuff what people think or don't think of them. They want to help Amnesty, so they do, they want to appear on American Idol, they do. You really can't get much more punk than that. They're not sheep. They don't do what they are told, they do as they want. They believe in something and act on it. They're not doing this for the money (they have more than enough), or the fame and success (no other band even comes close to them). They're doing this because they believe in it, they are smart and know exactly how to get maximum exposure for a very worthy cause, and if in the process we are entertained by it well great! What's there to lose respect for them about?

I agree with you, Green Day do whatever they want when they want. That is Punk. There is no reason to lose respect for them just because they appear on a gay show. :thumbsup:

Yes. There are people out there who don't even know where Darfur is, or worse, have never even heard of it or what the hell is happening there, yet they could rattle off the names of all the American Idol winners and runners up!

unfortunately you are completely correct about this. i've been aware of what's going on there for a while and when i first heard about the Instant Karma CD i thought it would be a great way of getting the word out and raising money. but i'm finding out that a lot of people just are completely oblivious of what is going on in the world around them

i applaud what Green Day did last night. my first reaction was WTF, Amer Idol? but really, that show reaches almost every single demographic, especially those who spend money on music. they did what they had to do to spread the word and i respect them for that

i was trolling Am Idol sites yesterday before Andres got confirmation that Green Day would be there, i didn't want to waste my time watching unless i knew. half the people on those sites didn't know anything about Darfur or the Instant Karma project, Amnesty International, etc. :blink: unbelievable but true

What can I say, we live in a world of ignorance and blindess.

^ thank you for that.

:thumbsup: glad to be of service :D

i posted on a few why Green Day would be on and what the song was for, etc. comments ranged from "hope Green Day doesn't fuck it up" to "whatever". but they sure didn't mind discussing the idols for pages and pages. i had to leave the sites quickly before i said things i didn't really need to say. some people just don't care about anything that doesn't affect them directly :cry:

and my local fox channel has spent a lot of time on covering the show, the idols and every single guest EXCEPT Green Day. you'd think they could at least mention them and why they were on the show!

I can't believe how petty some people are. I thought the people on this forum were fans? It's a really smart move to play this single on a high profile show to raise awareness of the Darfur crisis. It doesn't matter the show is crap, maybe it's people who bask in rubbish like American Idol that need to be made aware there's an evil world out there!

I'm not upset at all that they were on this show. It's all about the context. If they had been shamlessly self-promoting it would have been different, but they used the platform to get across a serious message, and they did it brilliantly. It was like a reminder that a whole other planet exists from the crassness and commercialism that is American Idol. It was like crashing a vulgar party with a message of truth. It was wonderful.

And it was pure Green Day. They always look like they came from another planet at these crazy media events. It's like they're another species that has integrity and humility. :D And I find it a really powerful reminder that you never have to give that up.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I'm a bit late in posting after their incredible appearance on A.I., and it took some time to read through all the posts.

First and foremost, the guys LOOKED and sounded great! Billie was absolutely gorgeous and his voice was amazing. It gave me goose, no, "Billie Bumps". The sober mood was fitting for the song, as they weren't so much trying to draw attention to themselves, but to the purpose of their cause. That's called humility. The close ups of Billie were amazing. He looked so sweet and sexy. There is no way in hiding that fact, try as he may. :lol: I loved how Tre' still got in some goofy facial expressions though. And Billies' sweet smile at the end was priceless. The increased exposure to the crisis in Darfur is a good thing. And who better that Green Day to get that message to the masses. God Bless Green Day forever. :kiss: :wub:

I liked the fact that Billie Joe was low-key and in shadow a lot of the time, GD letting themselves be literally overshadowed by the images of John, Yoko, and Darfur. It reminded me - in terms of contrast - with the Billboard performance of Holiday, where there was this gigantic screen image of Billie Joe himself as he held that crutch over his head, trying to draw attention to the plight of maimed soldiers returning from Iraq.

So, he shouted the message in his own words - he almost whispered it in John's; one way or another, he keeps on saying it. I look at stuff in this thread where people wonder if GD are living up to their expectations, and I think, fuckit - can't you see that GD are putting their hopes in you?
