FilmAdaptation
On the last page I wrote a reply, if you're interested in reading it! Thanks!I did, but I wasn't planning on replying. But since you bring it up again. I never said that they wanted to the be poster child, however, I don't think they have ever rejected the punk moniker, especially Billie. All I was saying is that they do internalize it, and it is apart of them, and they talk about it. So to me, if they are going to have it that way, they should do things according to how they say they are. While this choice wasn't my favorite, I'm OK with because of the cause. But also, like I said, under any other context, I wouldn't be. Though I hope they would never do it in any other context.

mbk
Thats right you dont think it was an accident that Billie was wearing a jean jacket when everyone else was all glamorous do you?Absolutely not. Everything he does, he means to do. It really was like crashing a pageant to crassness and capitalism and turning it on its ear, but they were invited, which makes it even more subversive and perfect!!! That's why I don't understand all the objections. They couldn't have been more punk if they had streaked across the stage unannounced carrying a banner saying "you're all fucking peasants kept doped up on TV!!!" I don't usually get any praise for my opinions. I don't think anyone else will be pleased with what I have to say about things. But over the past 22 years of my life I've finally realised that the internet is relative and not tangible and definitely not srs bidness.
Parley
You see, I came into this thread dead bent to be angry with them for going on American Idol. Now, I realize that it waas for a good cause, even if it was American Idol. I'm glad you see that the cause can outweigh the fact that they appeared on a lame show. Believe me, Green Day is absolutely the only thing that would've made me sit through that show. So we do agree on something.

Whydoyouwanthim
You guys.... Some of you really disappoint me. There's nothing wrong with American Idol... It's a freaking show to help people that haven't gotten the chance they deserve at a career they deserve, and you're annoyed that Green Day played on the show? Gah, you guys just make me sick sometimes...To the people that may agree with me, Thank You.And the guys did a wonderful, wonderful job tonight.. And I will admit, I was bitching to my mom about how all the performers were kind of old (except Joe Perry, he's just a legend)And then Green Day showed up... I was quite excited, although (at the time) slightly confused.

I mean if they have never shoved punk rock out of their lives, they should adhear to the principles of the idea. I agree with you. However, I think the underlying meaning of all this is that Darfur needs awareness and money, and putting up fliers for it wouldn't cut it. Green Day have to do what they can with the power they have attained. The funny thing about fame is that once it's on top of you, your decisions mean a lot more to everyone, and the honesty of the situation is that by upsetting a handful of people, they have raised much much more money for Darfur and awareness on top of it all. Had they not, it would have grated on their souls that they had the chance to save thousands of people just by upsetting a handful. They could have saved lives. The bottom line is when you have as much power as these boys have, you have to do good with it, even if that means being the hero no one wants to hang around with anymore. FilmAdaptation
I don't think anyone is mad they went on, but only because of the cause. I just think some are more accepting of it than others. Its not like any of us hate Green Day just because of it. Some seem to act like any questioning of a band = a horrible fan.

Or I can't speak on everyone's behalf, but I really think that questioning things is how we learn. I think the exchange of opinions that is occurring is more important than sitting around talking about how crunchy Billie's hair's gotten.

Both the cause, and even more so, the contents of the lyrics were like a bomb thrown into the fatuousness and tacky glitz of American Idol.Uh, looks like I'm the only one...
