fatallonglost
Me?I'm pretty much over it. It's just that I'm sick of people bashing them, and when they do shit like this, they pretty much set themselves up to be called sellouts. I dont know if that made any sense. I'm probably contradicting myself. But that's okay."It's okay if you rip yourself off"Three guesses who said it. They're selling themselves, not the entire music or punk community. It's their lives. Who made them spokespeople for punk? They didn't say anything about it. All they're doing is selling themselves, and I don't see how that concerns anyone, much less thousands of people. It's their decision, and and they don't sit around thinking "HAY I WUNDR IF DA PUNX WIL B MADZ @ US!?" because they don't give two shits if anyone's going to be upset by them. In fact, I'm sure they'd enjoy it if they knew how many people they upset tonight.Anyhow, I think we're both basically arguing the same argument here, but in different ways. Bottom line is that we love the band, and we'll support them however they need us to, but sometimes that means toughing it out when people bash the shit out of them. I'm okay with that. mbk
I'm not upset at all that they were on this show. It's all about the context. If they had been shamlessly self-promoting it would have been different, but they used the platform to get across a serious message, and they did it brilliantly. It was like a reminder that a whole other planet exists from the crassness and commercialism that is American Idol. It was like crashing a vulgar party with a message of truth. It was wonderful. And it was pure Green Day. They always look like they came from another planet at these crazy media events. It's like they're another species that has integrity and humility. And I find it a really powerful reminder that you never have to give that up.

No Man Can Eat Fifty Eggs!
Well I watched American Idol. I actually liked it. And when Ryan said the two words I was desperately waiting for, "Green Day", I shrieked with glee. And my parents started laughing at me because I became so crazy. But the performance was great. I really missed seeing them perform...
Parley
For the record, there are some of you who even if Green Day went on American Idol to promote their own music, would say it's for a good cause.Ignorance is bliss :wink:And yes, I enjoy being a pain in the ass.I hate to break this to you, but disagreeing with you doesn't make one ignorant (I tend to think it's quite the opposite, but that's beside the point). And you're doing an excellent job of being a pain in the ass. fatallonglost
They have said a lot about being punk, especially Billie. While they don't care what people think, and all that, they do still talk about it.Billie Joe, personally has said a lot about punk, and that's because arguably it's the lifestyle he sees best, but he never said Green Day was punk. Even if he did say that Green Day was punk ( and I missed it ), then who made them the poster children? The media did. Punks should know that Green Day aren't their leaders, if they are in fact punk to begin with. Green Day is "punk" to the general public, not to the punk community.Honestly, any punk rocker who has their panties in a twist over green day being on a TV show they probably shouldn't have even heard about, is obviously not doing enough kicking over trashcans and fighting the good fight if they have time to watch arch enemy number one: The media. I never said it did. I was meaning when people stick to their point and will not sway no matter what evidence is given to them. You see, I came into this thread dead bent to be angry with them for going on American Idol. Now, I realize that it waas for a good cause, even if it was American Idol. Think of the kids in Darfur, right? And thanks.

mistress
i had it ready to record just in case the rumors were true...i'm so glad i did!!the more i thought about it, the more it made sense..idol was all into charity this year, they probably made a connection with american idol when they were down in new orleans...no matter what anyone thinks of them being on the show, they reached millions more now, the song's sales will go up, more proceeds to the charity. i don't think they ever would have done it for any other reason. they were awesome, i love them, and i always will :teehee:
