Band's influences on each other - Green Day or others

Alright, following on from the "copying" side of things I thought maybe you guys might like to discuss how bands influence each other but in a more broader sense than the outright " X copies Y " kinda accusations.

My personal opinion of a good example is the influence of both The Who's 'Quadrophenia' and Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' on American Idiot, as an album.

Anyone who really knows those albums well ( and maybe has seen both the movies too ) will see where I am coming from.

well, i havent actually seen/heard them, but i see where you're coming from on the "maybe you guys might like to discuss how bands influence each other but in a more broader sense than the outright " X copies Y " kinda accusations." thing. i've made my views clear (i hope) in the closed thread with all that 'mcr copying gd' shit, and those views go for all bands, not just the two in quesiton.

OK, well I'll go with My Chemical Romance.

They have 5 people in the band, so there's alot of different influences: The Misfits, Iron Maiden, Green Day, Black Flag etc. etc.

In their latest album (The Black Parade) you can really hear influences from Queen and in my opinion alot of Iron Maiden and even Nirvana at some parts :D

Yeah, I thought getting away from the actual accusation type of thing and discussing similarities and influences but in a much broader sense than just two bands might make for a more varied discussion where more people can participate.

I agree about Quadraphenia's influance on AI, but I havent seen The Wall so I can't comment on that.

Also I've noticed that more bands are starting to act like Green Day on stage, for example, Deryk from Sum 41 has acted more and more like Billie Joe over the years when playing live.

And I think the way MCR's 'Welcome To The Black Parade' sounds is influenced by 'Letterbomb' and 'Bohemian Rhapsady', but that might just be me...

yep, i agree. :D well, my brother likes lostprophets, and he wanted me to point out that the intro to one of their songs (cant remember what it's called...i'll go ask him in a minute, he's gone and buggered off somewhere) sounds just like the intro to 'monster' by the automatic. i'm not sure myself, as i haven't heard either of them properly. :P

YES! I've heard a lot of Queen in MCR's new album.

Definetley, and the way Gerard is on stage now - the whole dramatic thing he's got going on, just reminds me of Freddie Mercury

First off, Y totally copied X.

I think a lot of musicians get inspirations from other bands. Then, when you mix up 4 or 5 different inspirations, you get an original sounding band. Like, a mix of Green Day, Anti-Flag and Black label Society... you get... my music. :)

i think the best bands come from people who are influenced by lots of different styles of music. that's where the more original music comes from, as oppossed to people just making music that sounds like everything else they listen to.

yeah, i think that it's good when bands are influenced by lots of different styles too. i don't think there are really any bands that haven't been influenced by someone else in one way or another, but the more the merrier, i say! :P the only thing i don't like is when bands are influenced by what they think the public and the media want to hear, in order to achieve the highest sales.:sick: that kinda sucks.

This thread will annoy me, I just know it. So other than this post, I'm going to try and steer clear.

Well, Slash learned to solo from Jimmy Page. Not personally, but through listing to Zeppelin. You can definitely feel a sense of influence in alot of Slash's stuff.

The Wall definatly had an impact on American Idiot. The intricate story line coupled with songs that twist in and out of each other is deeply involved in the success of both albums.

Imo, most bands have traits of others. Sometimes they show very clearly, but everyone had an influence and a reason to make the music that they did/do. If I were in a successful band, I'd be flattered if I heard of another "copycat" band because it would mean that mine were successful and admired.

well anybody is influenced by all the music they listen to. even if they just hear a song, they subconsciously have the idea in their head. and when they are writing songs they have the style of the song they listened to in the back of their mind and that influences the song they are writing sometimes a lot sometimes extremely unoticable. i know this idea is really wierd and abstract, but w/e

o and the new Panic at the Disco cd, Pretty. Odd. is really influenced by the Beatles.

Any genre with "nu-" in front of it, will never be good.

Poor emo got tarnished by "nu-emo" or as I call it, "neo-emo."

Motley Crue were a very large influence for Guns N' Roses (Motley Crue took Guns n Roses on their first ever tour during Motleys Girls, Girls, Girls album, and helped them etc.)

Aerosmith were a large influence for Motley Crue (looks, style, music etc)

you can definitely hear Pink Floyd in the album Come What(ever) May by Stone Sour (Especially Sillyworld)

um Wednesday 13, Murderdolls and Frankenstein Drag Queens all influenced by The Misfits and other such related horror punk and such artists.
