If you accept religion and believe in God it doesnt mean you dont have freedom to think for yourself in any capacity whatsoever. If you choose to believe in God and follow your religions beliefs, you actually still have a brain and can still have experiences and thoughts. Bono can write meaningful lyrics because of his experiences. He doesn't have a chain that holds him back because he can not think for himself now that he believes in God. Gimme a break.

There are many people who have a religious faith and believe in god but are not deeply immersed in their religion. They may just be following a family or cultural tradition, or simply find that religion helps them make sense of the world, and they find it comforting. They usually feel free to think in ways that their religion frowns on, when it seems to them to be ethical and proper, and are therefore not overly burdened by their beliefs.

But when someone takes his or her religion utterly seriously and completely to heart, they have given up the freedom to think for themselves, because their religion in fact mandates that they do so. Thinking for oneself in a way that is inconsistent or at odds with the tenets of their religion is not allowed and is considered a serious transgression in virtually every religion.

In the near future I am going to close the door on activism and commerce and other ideas that engage me, and I am going to shut it quite tight, for a little while at least, and focus on writing and making music.''

This is Bono, from a new biography called U2 by U2 - I think even this little piece about the book reveals the insulated world they live in - Larry Mullen describes them as being like 'a dysfunctional family'.

As to the quote - yeah, I'll believe it when I see it! He's even qualifying it in that sentence - 'for a little while at least' - like I said, art is hard, what he's doing now is easier for him. I'd like to think that if he did that, something of what he's undoubtedly capable of might emerge, but the guy needs to come face-to-face with himself in a real way.

When he shuts that door, he ought to take some Green Day with him - find out what unflinching honesty is.

I don't know if this has been covered, (i don't have time to check) but will there be some kind of promo video for the single? If it's being released on cd there should be something, like when BIAB came out they started airing i think the St Jimmy performance.

Has anyone else noticed that at the beginning of "The Saints are Comming" when Billie's singing that Bonno does this little dance thing that makes him look like an injured gorilla?

Hey, I'm glad it's not just us "rebellious" teenagers who feel that way. Yes, there are varying degrees to which someone can practice a religion, but the very idea of religion is molding your beliefs to an established set of rules.

It's important to distinguish between spirituality and religion. You can have spiritual beliefs in God and what have you, but if you're only loosely following a religion, you're not considered a "faithful" member of said religion.

And there's that whole concept of faith that really irks me. Sorry to break out the dictionary, but faith is by definition "belief that is not based on proof". In this modern society, do we accept scientific claims without being presented with evidence to back them up? The same people who exercise perfect reasoning skills when it comes to "worldly" matters will turn around and proudly say that they have faith, that they don't need any proof that their religion is correct. Why should it be held to a different standard? Why can't we settle for uncertainty?

Bono and Billie. U2 and Green Day.

Am I going the be the only voice of dissent here? I doubt it.

I am, however, glad of one thing:

They decided not to go with the lame Abbey Road crossing idea.

I hope.

In fact I don't like this pic....if was just Billie, could be nice, but if he was all on it.....I don't know, seems like he is in agony, gosh....

I think maybe they are showing them like that because of the whole devastation from Hurricane Katrina. This songs proceeds go to Music Rising, which is a charity for the devastated area, maybe thats why they are showing them in agony (as many the people of the gulf coast were and actually many still are. :/)

It's a really stark, strong image, I love it. It looks punk, it suits the 'cause' tone and the emotional content of the song.

Both of these men are 'crying to their daddies', there is agony on Billie Joe's face - anyone who couldn't see it all over the Abbey Road photos and the intensity of his vocal - well, look at the logic of it; a song like that, in September, yeah? I think it cost him, but that's just my response to what I saw and heard, and my response to music is emotional.

Everyone noticed how different his vocal is on this song - it's coming from a place of suffering. I find the live performance tough to watch or listen to because of that - it's so fucking vivid and raw.

I know that....and I agree with you that is strong, looks punk.....and I can feel his agony, was the first thing I felt when I saw it..........my response to music, and many things I guees, is too emotional too; thas why I don't like what I feel behind of this pic...not behind of them, but behind of what this pic means....at least to me.

I agree - but art should tell the truth, and make us look pain right in the face, if that's what's there.

Anything less stark would have been a betrayal of that.

I agree with you again :) ....art should be always about tell the truth...I don't have fear of see the pain on it, or in his voice....Thats why I love Vincent: the truth and his pain on his drawnings.

.....but its not about that: I can see his agony on this pic, his honesty on it...its so clear to me. But what I feel behind this pic thats what disturbe me...not the pain, not his face, not thim......sorry, I can't explain....is a feeling, just it.....and maybe im wrong, why not?.....is just a feeling that something is not right on it.
