Whoa... The recorded version was just on the radio. It was awsome! I didn't really like the live version, but the recorded one is sweet! I didn't expect it to be on the radio already. To top that, it's the most requested song this week :o Seems like im gonna be hearing alot of Green Day :D

I'll copypaste some info I found at U2.com regarding Abbey Road sessions. As English isn't my native language, I write as a 6 year old and my gramma is horrible, so that's why I post only full text articles with new information.

This warning is necessary in order to avoid comments like this one: http://www.greendaycommunity.org/Forum/ind...t&p=1410964

so just be patient with me, ok?

Well, this is what I want to share:

I found this at e-Bay

http://cgi.ebay.com/U2-GREEN-DAY-THE-SAINT...1QQcmdZViewItem

it's the radio promo, and it's sad somebody is making money with a benefit project

According to The Edge, the CD single cover will include a picture of the Ninth Ward, part of New Orleans, and photos taken by Anton Corbijn at Abbey Road Studios.

This is a fragment of U2's diaries:

Monday, September 11th

Billy Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool, Mike Dirnt, and assorted Green Day crew members were in the studio early this morning. The plan had been for the two bands to sit down with Rick Rubin to discuss how the week would pan out. Not a long meeting as it turned out. ‘They just went straight into the studio and started playing,’ said Joe O’Herlihy. ‘Quite different bands but what they have in common is this amazing musical energy.’

Tuesday September 12th

The bands performed the track multiple times yesterday and, before they resume together today, Rick wants to record the different musicians individually. A video-shoot is also underway with Chris Milk, best known for his work with Kanye West, Courtney Love and Audioslave. Chris has flown in from Paris where he is finishing up the new Gnarls Barkley video.

‘Bono asked me to be a fly on the wall,’ he says. ‘Normally I’d bring a crew - director of photography, sound-guy, another camera - but it’s just me and an assistant. Pretty strange to be crouching on the floor in the control room as Green Day and U2 discuss the playback!’

Something else though, he adds, ‘to see these bands playing live – and in this place too!’

Wednesday September 13th

Anton Corbijn is in the house, several cameras hanging off his lanky frame. Mainly he is shooting reportage-style while the two bands work on ‘The Saints’ but by late afternoon, he sets up the shot which will shoot round the world tomorrow. Much to the surprise of those who have been hanging around outside – and those now craning out of car windows and peering out of buses – the seven musicians meet each other on the zebra crossing immortalised on the cover of ‘Abbey Road’.

‘There was a fair bit of screeching of brakes but no crashes,’ says Joe O’Herlihy. ‘Just for a moment there, on a much smaller scale, it had a hint of San Franciso, 1987 and stop the traffic…’

Back inside Bono has news: ‘You’ll never guess who’s coming over tonight?’

An hour or so later, we’ve guessed: it’s Richard Jobson, the man who, nearly thirty years ago, as a teenager in Glasgow, wrote the song that U2 and Green Day are working on. Former Skids frontman and now successful film maker, Jobson is still pinching himself at this strange twist of fate. He genuinely couldn’t believe it when Edge called him up ten days ago to ask about performing ‘The Saints Are Coming’:

‘I thought it was one of my Irish mates winding me up, I really did!’

‘It’s true, he just wouldn’t believe me,’ adds Edge. ‘I was saying, ‘This is Edge from U2 and he was saying, ‘yeah, yeah, yeah…’

Eventually, Edge managed to convince him of his impeccable rock’n’roll credentials, and told him the song had a special resonance for Music Rising. As he chats with Bono, and the latest version of the track plays back, Jobson can barely conceal his delight. Until a few days ago he hadn’t heard the track in decades.

‘When Edge told me, I had to go find it online and download it – just to remind myself.’

Later Anton corralls the seven musicians, along with Jobson, into a photo shoot – Bono holding up a tambourine, halo-style, over Jobson’s head.

’I tried to get my photo taken by Anton thirty years ago,’ quips Jobson. ‘But my band wasn’t cool enough!’

That's really cool, thanx for posting it! :)

why is it that everytime we see something new with Green Day, there's ALWAYS something bad to say about Billie. he's big headed, his hair is too long, he's fat, he's turning into plastic, blah blah blah

leave him alone sad.gif

he doesnt have to still do this. he doesnt have to be in a band anymore. they could just quit right now. but they dont, they stay in Green Day because they love music and they love their fans, and they love what they do

some fans, puh! just leave him alone! who care what he does, its his life, his decisions on what he wants to do.

maybe im overreacting, im just bitter right now.

I don't think you're over-reacting, I think the guy is entitled to some fucking respect for all that he does and all that he means to most of us. Every time I hear him spoken about as if he was a thing instead of a human being, it makes me fucking sad, there's no other word for it.

It's also a pity that - with some exceptions, granted - people don't seem to see everything the New Orleans show meant, not only to the bands performing, but jesus - to the people of New Orleans!

Does nobody remember what that stadium was - hell on earth?

I think it's great that they teamed up. I was watching on tv and I feel ripped off. All it was 30 seconds of Beautiful Day. That's all I got from the half time show. Amen spark in the night! Why don't we post pictures of ourselves and nitpick them to death.

I hated getting sucked into defending his appearance in this thread but sometimes it's hard to ignore those comments. It's sad that people think he's that shallow or egotistical when he's seemigly the antithesis of those things. His ego as far as I can tell is solely related to the pride he takes in writing his music and performing it.

The performance was so powerful I can't stop listening to it.

There are several places I just get chills like when Bono screams "Please, I am an American". I look forward to hearing the studio version but it's going to be hard to top that.

I hope they release the entire 3 song performance for download because some of the best parts were the transitions. I loved the way the Edge compared it to a New Orleans funeral procession with the lament being WMUWSE building towards the celebration of A Beautiful Day.

So much thought was put into the live performance and it was brilliant and moving.

I have a new found respect for the Edge, he was so humble in the interviews and gracious, giving props to Green Day. I'm so thankful that he picked up the phone to call Billie and we now have this great piece of music to enjoy. Well done to U2 and Green Day.

My first experience of the performance was hearing on the radio - appropriately enough to the analogy of Saints Are Coming, there was a storm and 'the line went' at my place, so I was offline for a week! I can tell you, it was so intense to hear it, so charged.

U2's musicianship was to the fore, Green Day fucking tight as they always are - Mike just blazed, Tre was fucking manically wonderful, Billie's vocal so raw on those meaningful songs, and Bono was full of passion and vocal beauty. I agree with you about the transitions - it was all seamless, which made it such muscular rock, like a punch to the gut - the power of it, the focus!

When Bono screamed that line, all the terrible pictures of that time came rushing back into my mind's eye - the bodies in the street under whatever covering was available, held down by bricks - people in wheelchairs, the senior citizens home where the occupants were abandoned to their fate, people on the rooves of their houses with the streets like paddy-fields around them. The young girls who were left vulnerable to assault, the children separated from parents - and no-one came, no-one came!

The President flew over in Airforce looking-after-number-fucking One, and he looked down on them all, in more ways than one. Everyone seemed to spend their time placing blame - and still nobody came, and all these people were Americans, living in the world's biggest and wealthiest democracy - dying on the empty streets, left there like garbage, while others tried to give them what dignity they could. It was unreal - except that it was fucking real.

Without stuff like Music Rising, without someone like The Edge who goes in and gets stuff done and more than anything, shines a light, everything gets forgotten, goes to the back pages, and the people who must be so fucking traumatized - and in many cases, needy, are forgotten too, unsexy news.

As the man so often says, rock and roll can be fun and dangerous at the same time - but New Orleans showed what else it can be - it can be something beautiful and powerful that gives voice to the heart, an undeniable force for good.

Isn't it a wonderful thing that when the truth is put in front of people, by seven men who believe, that it all becomes crystal clear - what's right, what's the response we should have as human beings, all of us together.

Both of these bands were inspirational - they made us all look at something that needed to be seen, and jesus, they sang like angels while they did it, and they played some fucking sweet guitar.

^agree. i think we owe him a huge debt of gratitude. people nitpick as if he was not a human being

I totally agree. I don't understand why people pick at Billie. I think he's great, particularly because he's so normal and human. He's not some weird rock star with weird rituals and habits. He's just good ol' Billie Joe Armstrong. Talented, charming, funny and most of all, himself.

^^^So true :)

Can I get another AMEN?

Thank you. People around here bitch about everything they do, interesting group of fans isn't it?

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... and they call themself punks! interesting... isn't it? :(

i totaly agree he's human just like every body else, i love

him the way he is

The main difference with the studio version, is the absence of the brass band. But the rest is very similar, Billie starts singing the snippet of 'House of the Rising Sun' with a sweet voice until the song explodes in insane proportions. I've uploaded a low-fi mp3 of the studio version so you can listen.

http://download.yousendit.com/1A2048C43ECED679

BTW, that's not any random brass line-up. It includes the New Birth Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, and others local greats. Edge attended to New Birth and Trombone Shorty gigs while touring, so he had a connection with them before Katrina disaster. Was a nice thing to invite these bands to join them in such a special event.

So you have jazz, punk and pop all mixed together ... it should have been a nightmare, but the result was the most beautiful and epic thing I've heard in my life.

Thanks!

I was just explaining to my 11 yr old son the importance of everything that happened with this collaberation. From these two HUGE bands doing this, to picking this highly significant song, to recording this at Abbey Road and the Beatles connection there, to meeting with the guy from the Skids that wrote this song and him being flabbergasted by the whole thing. And all the money going to charity. To the live emotional amazing performance It is simply amazing.

Certainly not something you see everyday.

I agree with you 100%.

I have a tendency to criticize people for even the most insignificant thing(s), not just Billie. However, I finally acknowledged that criticizing others [defects or decisions] is very wrong and I'm truly sorry if I've offended Billie in any way, because that definitely was not my intention.

I'll be honest and say that I really don't give a damn about the decisions Billie makes because it's his life; he can do whatever the fuck he wants with it; it's definitely none of my concern. None of you shouldn't care about the decisions he makes either! Who cares if his teeth are fucked up or if his hair is too long or if he looks too old -- we should love Billie just the way he is! Only a true fan would do that.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: there's more to Billie than his looks. He's an amazing guitarist/singer/songwriter, performer, father, husband, and friend! No matter what Billie does to himself physically or if he ages, he'll always be a gorgeous man to me, and that's why I love him with all my heart.

You people really do shock me sometimes. You're totally shallow and end up missing the point of everything that man does 99% of the time. If you're not moaning about the music he writes, how mainstream it is or how much he's changed for the worse you're bloody critisizing him ageing! It's pathetic. He isn't a young 20 year old punk anymore. He's a very, very busy father of two who is in his mid thirties. He's been on holiday and probably put on some weight. So bloody what?! When they were touring you were all moaning about how skinny he looked, seems the poor guy can't do anything right to please his 'fans' And oh dear, he grew his hair and he's starting to grow out of the 'pretty boy' look he adopted throughout american idiot. I shoudn't be suprised that some of you are maoaning about that, not finding him pretty enough anymore?! I think people start to forget that he is still a human being, still has feelings and still does the things we do. You should really stop placing him on a pedastool of invincibility because everytime he gets down from it you all start having shit fits and its highly annoying.

I don't know in your countries, but yesterday, at 9:00 pm, on a French Radio Station, there was the studio version of ''The Saints Are coming".

It's cool, I'm very happy that song is on radio now, but I'm very very exciting to be on November 6th... I will buy this soooooooo great single !
