It's a charity record ladies and gents. If it comes out sounding a bit OK we should thank our lucky stars. The point is that it's helping people out and letting two bands jam together at the same time. I don't like U2 but I'm sure Green Day will pull them out of the mire......

I love U2 so I cant wait to hear this. Once again I bet only idiot club members will get the previews. Fuck it, it will be worth the wait. Two of my favourite bands playing together

Look, U2 could rock if they got off their middle-aged, over-wealthy, pompous asses and sacked their producers while they're at it - to me, production is the death of rock and roll in too many cases, and I guess that's maybe why I love punk so much.

Billie Joe says all rock bands should have a little dirt on their faces, I say their sound should have enough rawness in it to allow it to be accessible and immediate; U2 are drowning and hiding in production, and for me, it remains to be seen if there's anything underneath a decade of self-indulgence.

In City of Blinding Lights, Bono asks 'what happened to the beauty I had inside of me?' - he should take a long look at Billie Joe if he wants to find out, because there's the beauty, and if you look at him in that Idiot Club clip, you can see the price he pays for being true to it, because it fucking costs.

I think Bono shrinks away from paying that price - his fellow band-members complain about how little time he spends in the studio, always being called away to his charity work - one time it was a phone-call from the fucking Pope!

Charity is all very well and good and laudable, and hey, if you're doing good works, no-one can complain that you're neglecting the thing you were put on earth to do - make your music, man - give it everything, if you dare. Billie Joe does - he puts everything he has on the line, his family, his health, his mental stability - and that's why he produces great art.

To all of you calling U2 "boring", "no punk", "mellow", you don't know the best material of the band, in the early 80's U2 rocked very well, and kicked butts:

Please to check the albums:

-Boy - 1980

-War - 1983

-Under a Blood Red Sky - 1983

or The Ramones song "Beat on the Brat", that U2 played in the Ramones Tribute Concert.

You are judging U2 based in recent more polished materal , the true origins of the band are punk, they are one of the first post-punk bands.

The truth is... that they can rock hard yet, "only if they wants to"

Wow, such authority from someone in their first post. Learn the ropes, then jump on your high horse.

I don't think I've ever been so musically confused.

I hate U2. No, thats a lie, some songs I really like, its Bono that I hate.

He's a money hungry, fame hogging dick. I mean, U2 is Bono, and some other guys no-one knows.

However, I'm looking forward to this single to hear fresh new Green Day.

I'm also glad its for the "New Orleans Appeal."

I just hope Billie Joe doesn't end up like Bono, though I can't quite see a Bono in him.

I agree with you - I think when they started giving their albums titles with more than one word, the rot started setting in; and the latest is called 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' - that's a long way from 'Boy' or 'War', lol!

Boy is raw and wonderful, I especially love 'Out of Control', and I think if people were open enough to listen to it, they could identify with a lot of what's in there.

I agree that their earlier stuff was much better.

I think it was their 7th album, The Joshua Tree, that was my favourite though.

It was released in early 1987 I think.

I can't stand the more recent, fatuous shit.

Bono's just up himself because he's allowed to be - he's your typical rock star, insulated from life and whining that he has nothing to write about as a result. He's nevertheless a fine lyricist - 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own' is a beautiful song, because it's about how he came to terms with his father's death - for the first time in decades, something real actually happened to the guy. His father, btw, is the atomic bomb he was dismantling.

I can't see a Bono in Billie either - he's already successfully avoided the pitfalls of fame and money with Dookie, he has a good head on his shoulders; just that he seems to look on U2 as an example of how to 'not fade away' - I would say, look at Dylan instead.

I hate U2 but i'm actually quite excited about this! (And i'm not denying that U2 have their kudos or whatever, it's just not my thing) At least their covering something good - and as long as Bono doesn't take all the credit for it i'll be happy - i just don't understand how it's gonna work - how are they gonna make up the band? Who's gonna play what? And i'm glad someone's thinking about New Orleans for once. Everyone forgets about it.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that Bono has latched onto Billie. Those pics of him crouched in the aisle at the Grammy's pontificating, while Billie was lost in thought were very telling. I think Bono sees in him a powerful voice, figuratively speaking, who doesn't come with all the rockstar baggage he himself has acquired.

'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own' aside, Bono has been phoning it in musically for the last decade but I still look forward to hearing this collaboration and I suspect it's going to be more Green Day than U2. Playing Live 8 seemed to be very important to them and I'm sure they're looking forward to contributing to this cause. They're forever linked to the Katrina disaster because of how meaningful WMUWSE became during that tragedy.

On another note, I guess I'm the only one who thought Billie looked awesome in the Idiot Club video. He was scruffy but you can tell they're in the thick of it and that's fantastic. He's not tanned and fat from sitting on a beach all summer. Billie is under enormous pressure to follow up the juggernaut that American Idiot became but at the same time, I'm sure he's excited to be challenging himself and pushing Green Day into new territory musically. I have complete confidence that he knows what he's doing and won't settle for mediocrity unlike Bono.

So after months of nothing, the news this week has been all good.

I don't really enjoy U2, but it should be interesting to see what'll happen with the track. I bet people of all ages will love it, though, because of how each band appeals to generations across the board.
