GREEN DAY'S GETTING THE PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY SPIRIT OF LIBERTY AWARD

More often than not, the big Inside the Beltway civil liberties and progressive advocacy organizations might be hard for regular Americans to relate to, especially Americans under 40. Hard as they try-- and the ones I'm in touch with do try hard-- there's often a social disconnect somewhere along the line. People For the American Way, the granddaddy of 'em all, just announced something that is very easily relatable for the vast majority of young Americans. On October 10, they'll be presenting their Spirit of Liberty Award to Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt-- GREEN DAY-- the 2006 Spirit of Liberty Award. PFAW has all the info about the ceremony, as well as the other nominees, here and I'm sure they add the Green Day information in a day or two. (It just happened.)

It makes me so happy when adults recognize Green Day for their music and their lyrics. So much that I have to speak in italics.

Hey, former honorees include the South Park guys. Awesome.

I bought tickets to this today, outrageously expensive although it's for charity. The People for the American Way are apparently really rich to think people could afford tickets to the upfront tables, well over $1000 per ticket, although the more you spend, the more amenities you get like smaller get togethers with the awards recepients, needless to say I will be meeting no one and will be lucky to see them onstage, maybe they'll stand on a box of something so I can see them.

I hope I'm wrong, but I fear I detect a hint of sarcasm in your post. I'm concerned that many people appear to mistake all that stage bombast--and even the words of American Idiot themselves--for ignorance when it only, in fact, condemns true ignorance. And I'm not trying to attack you specifically when I say this, but I've seen too many people criticize Green Day for talking about "things they don't know about"--but do these people ever consider the possibility that they themselves are the ones who don't understand? And before they condemn someone for being one-sided, shouldn't they reflect that when one side is so blatantly wrong, can't there sometimes be a "right" side?

So forgive me if the cause for my rant was erroneous, but I feel strong in saying: Yes. Give them the award.

By the way, I hope people are actually checking out the blog that was linked in the original post, as well as the website for the organization that's giving the award. They're pretty cool, and worth your time.
