Green Day GDA Q&A

"Were the master tapes for 'Ciggarettes and Valentines' really "stolen", or are you just bullshitting because the music was shit?" - Maybe not worded like that

I asked that same question... but yea, I worded it differently.

"Were the master tapes for Cigarettes and Valentines really stolen or did you guys decide to dispose of them and start from scratch yourselves?"

Uhm....well, Mike Dirnt being my inspiration and everything, what about asking him:

'What inspired you to play bass all the way through, with a band, when you were first playing guitar?'

- What do you think of the internet when it comes to your music? Is it a good thing or bad thing, considering the illegal downloading that's still taking place constantly.

Billie Joe already answered about that in the Phone messages they used to put up on GreenDay.com

-le sigh- Too bad they took it down. THOSE BASTARDS.

Just kidding. [Maybe we should ask them why the hell did they do that?! -cries-]

Oh, I got a question.

What exactly happened during the Shenanigan time period-- were you actually going to call it quits, did you have a fight, etc. [From what Mike said on BIAB, about how BJ called him up and asked, "Do you even want to do this anymore?"...]

Why would you want to know about that then, (he has already answered that before) when that is exactly what they are facing now after American Idiot? Unlike some of us, they live in the present.

It was me who originally posted that question about if they were frightened to make another album after the success of Dookie and if it would satisfy the fans as much as Dookie did.

The reason I put Dookie in the question and not American Idiot, is because they already made a record after Dookie, and not yet a new one after American Idiot. Also, Dookie was their first album to be so successfull. The success of American Idiot must've felt different, seeing as they were 'in the business' for a pretty long time at that point, plus they already had the experience of Dookie's succes.

1)What do you think about all of the 11-year-olds that think you're hot and don't know that you're old enough to be their fathers?

4) How do you balance your careers with your private/family life?

5) What keeps you from quitting after an album flopps? What makes you want to perservere and write more music?

I like those three.

to Billie:

What's the hardest song you've ever written, the one that took you the most time to write?

to all of them:

How has fatherhood changed you or influenced you?

What is your favorite song to play live?

What song and album are you guys most proud of?

I don't know if they have already been mentioned.

I also like the one about cigarettes and valentines.

What did you guys think about the sucess of American Idiot? I bet this has been asked 400000000 times, but it's for a report in school.

Maybe this will teach you not to choose to do reports on something you know nothing about. :)

That's been covered in an interview already.

What do you think about personal questions?

Where do you draw your line at what questions to answer?

That's a few more to add to ones I'vethought of.

I agree that's an interpretation you could put on it - but 'extortionist' is kinda specific, and I feel like he's characterizing someone.

I think a lot of stuff in Letterbomb is specific, and these kind of phrases stand out in a song that is dense in ideas, most of them more personal.

Dylan did a lot of this, and to take another example, Don McLean in American Pie. 'The day the music died' refers to Buddy Holly's death, but McLean doesn't mention his name once in the song, which is full of characterizations. Beetlebum also comes to mind - Damon Albarn's song about Liam Gallagher.

It all comes from the old poetic tradition where they would lampoon various people - sometimes powerful people - without saying exactly who they were.

These little cloak-and-dagger things are a songwriter's fun!

Maybe being a bass player sort of fell in his lap. They needed a bass player, and Billie Joe was already a dead set for a guitarist, so he switched to bass. i don't know.

Erm...

What do you think about your critics?

How much do your fans really mean to you? Do you think that teenage girls can be just as much of a fan of you as an older person could be? Would you call them a fan if they had only been listening since American Idiot?

Another good one would be where does Ronnie Blake really come from? Apparently Billie Joe always says that he comes from the place that they are perfoming at.

There are more but I can't think!

I'm not a bitch. I just speak the truth.

Ergo, you're an honest bitch :P

If I remember correctly, when Mike was playing second guitar, this guy named Sean was playing bass for them, and he left during a band practise and when he came back, he saw Mike on the bass and he said, "You know, you guys should just do it like that." And that was that...

This is a very boring question, but one that I've thought about every time I've seen them live...

Can you all still hear well after not wearing ear protection (those ear monitors that most performers wear now) for so many years around loud music? And are you worried about having hearing problems because of this?

And a question for Billie Joe (because as the frontman he gets the most attention):

Will you try to really describe what it feels like (both physically and emotionally) to perform in front of an audience of many thousands who literally adore you and the music you make?

One more (to all of them):

Are you trying to prepare yourselves mentally and emotionally for the response to your next album? No matter how wonderful it is, you're going to be ripped to shreds because (1) it's different from "American Idiot", or because (2) it's similar to "American Idiot." In other words, by making a masterpiece of rock (AI), you've put yourselves in an almost no-win situation with the following album.

I'm not sure if someone said this, but anyway. (tell me if you did)

If there was only one song you could choose to play live from each album, which ones would you choose?

I want to see questions that are more about their personalities rather than just the music

when I read or hear their answers I want it to sound like themselves, not just some formal thing

I have 2 questions...

1- Has Green Day ever checked out the contests here on GDA, meaning the Whatsername & Prosthetic Head contests...if they have, I'd love to know what they think of them (no, I didn't have an entry)

2- Has a movie for the song "Misery" ever been done or considered?

I'd also like to know if they're aware of how much better GDA is compared to the Idiot Club!! lol

Yeah! I always thought he was from london (Cos thats where i've seen them live), but then I watched a video of them performing in Australia and Billie said "Ronnie Blake! originally from Sydney, Australia!" and everyone cheered, and I was like fuck! he's been messing with us all this time

I'd love to know that, too! But there's no way that website is going to let them mention their biggest internet competition. :/
