Tom Delonge says Green Day isn't his kind of music

i agree...angels and airwaves is pretty shitty. its like a cross between coldplay and...blink.

I was just watching 7th Ave. Drop on Fuse, and A&A was on it...my god their songs get stuck in your head-not in a good way though. They repeat the words over and over and over and over and over again. Annoying voice.

I have no idea who Tom thinks he is.

how many times do i have to say it before it'll sink through your guys thick skulls... BLINK 182 AND GREEN DAY BOTH MAKE THE SAME KIND OF MUSIC!!!

get over it.

Slight correction...Blink TRIED to make the same kind of music as Green Day. They failed. Blink's music never came close to the quality of GD's music. Even Blink most definitely recognized this fact when the groups toured together. Blink knew they were totally shown up by Green Day. And everyone else knew it, too.

Get over that.

To clarify, Tom never stated that he had not heard any of the songs off of American Idiot. He said:

Tom: I haven't even heard that album! I only heard whatever [made it to] the radio. I love the fact that it got people psyched. But Angels and Airwaves is very much an extension of what I did on my last blink record, where we really dived into this Pink Floyd sort of world. I'm inspired by Green Day's success, but their music doesn't really touch me. It's not my kind of music.

As for him having his head up his ass, doesn't Billy Joe, as well? I remember an interview during the Pop Disaster tour on MTV where both of the bands were being interviewed. When the interview shifted to blink at the very beginning, and seemed like it was going to stay there, you should have seen the look on Green Day's face. They acted like they were the best fucking band ever, and that they deserved the entire show. What's more, in the Kerrang! interview with Green Day towards the end of the tour, Tre was bashing blink, saying he didn't care about them, what they thought, that Green Day were better than them, and it doesn't matter. blink never tried to compete with Green Day, Green Day tried to compete with blink. It was like they had something to prove, and when blink just tried to put on a show, Green Day tried to show them up. Did it disrupt blink's fan base? No.

What pisses me off is that Green Day has not had much of a political stance AT ALL before American Idiot, then all of a sudden, that's all they are. They change completely. If you recall, Green Day used to just be about sitting back, smoking pot, masturbating, and just generally fucking the system. I loved Green Day back then. Then they tried to go mainstream, go with grain. You can claim that Tom Delonge is focused on war, too, but at least he has a fucking reason: His brother is serving as a Navy SEAL in Iraq. What's more, he's played over there, supporting the troops. Where's Billie Joe? Sitting over here, saying "Fuck Americans." He's too good to go over there. Maybe he's the one who should pull his head out of his ass. Tom's just excited. He's making the best of a crappy situation. blink was his life, and he's excited he's found something else take its place. You can't say that if Green Day broke up, you wouldn't want the same to happen. Hell, right now, Billie Joe compares himself to Jesus. (And I think their second guitarist should get more credit that he does)

Oh, by the way, Tom has stated many times that his main influence was the Descendents. If you knew anythig about music, and actually looked at the stuff Tom wrote, you'd see that it was heavily influenced by them. They've even done a cover of a Descendents song ("Hope")... In fact, now that I think about it, they've covered pretty much all of bands that have inspired them, even Screeching Weasel... Unfortunately, I don't see Green Day in that lineup. And really, why is this pissing y'all off so much? He just said he didn't listen to the new album, because he doesn't like that kind of music anymore. C'mon.

Need I remind you of King for a Day? Catchy song.

"King for a day, princess by dawn

King for a day, in a leather thong

King for a day, princess by dawn

Just wait till all the guys get a load of me"

dude you know now people are gonna say well what about the fuck a dog in the ass song or fuck a pirate up the ass

well who cares at least im happy knowing that Tom Delonge isnt looking like an idiot with eyeliner and platform shoes on and trying to act all political and stuff. Since when was green day all about being against the government? They definately took advantage of the war in Iraq , and two they took advantage of how kids are dressing these days. I remember one time i was in class and a couple of girls were like look at this picture of Billie joe he doesnt even look punk like he does now , and it was a picture of him back in the 90s. Green Day was pretty cool back then. Now they're just lame.

"Sup" clearly stated this,

Yes yes Tom Delonge may suck , but Billie Joe is so cool with those platform shoes of his and the eyeliner....man like i said definately way cool.

and I replied. And there you have it. Not very complicated. However, if you have a more intelligent question, like one concerning any of the "legitimate" posts (like my 3 paragraph long one somewhere up there^), feel free to ask.

i love green day , just not american idiot green day . and i can bet money most people here found out about green day through american idiot.

and Im pretty sure back when Blink was around they were WAY bigger than Green Day. At point during 98 till no one really cared for Green Days new stuff , but everyone was in love with Blink-182

I feel the same way, totally. Well, I loved Green Day until American Idiot. (But don't get me wrong, I still love "old" Green Day!)

the whole idea of that is completely rediculous to me. blink 182 started in 1992, green day didn't get popular until 1994. how is it that blink 182 knew what to copy before they even heard it?

i'm not even a fan of blink 182, but that doesn't mean i can't except the fact that they are the same genre as some other bands i like and live with it. good charlotte and new found glory play the same kind of music too. does that mean i, or anyone else, has to like them because i'm a green day fan? no. i dont like any other pop punk other than green day and mxpx, but that doesn't mean the other bands aren't still pop-punk bands.

they did, but green day didn't really get big until 1994 when dookie came out, so the whole idea of copying them to get famous or anything wouldn't make sense if blink 182 started before that.

Green Day were together since like 1989 playing it in Gilman... but, they weren't big until Dookie came out. The only people who knew who Green Day was were the people who went in the clubs to watch them. Blink 182 started in the early 90's, but that doesn't mean that they didnt get more publicity than Green Day just because they were newer.

They both "started" around the same time, in the late 80's. blink released their first demo in '94, but they had been playing for about 6 years before that. Not sure when Green Day started, but they released their first album in '89.
