That was said after the fact - it's very easy for Tre to BS and talk confidently in order to pump it up after they actually upstaged Blink - who knows if they truly went in confident that they could do it.

No, going over to Europe, where they already have a bad view of the American state, and playing songs such as American Idiot is pretty much saying "Fuck America." (You can say things without actually saying them, you know what I mean?) As for his change - it just seems really weird that pretty much overnight, they change the style of their music, the way they look, and their overall message in general. One day, they're wearing jeans and a T-shirt, now they're wearing... well... scene kid clothes and eyeliner. It just really looks like Billie realised the band was dying, and they had to attract a bigger fan base, so they jumped on the Anti-American bandwagon.

I know what you're saying - but I really doubt they went over wanting people to hate America - they wanted to promote their record, of course they will play those songs. As for the overnight transition, according to the band, it took what was it - months? - to pull themselves together and start recording fresh. It's not like the churned out AI in two hours. :/ Besides, you can see that they change their sound towards Nimrod and Warning, they are going in a different direction. In my honest opinion they aren't changing their overall message - to me their overall message has always been speak your mind and think for yourself. Did they change the way they go about saying that - yes. Changing the message - no. In my opinion of course.

You can say it looks like this and looks like that, but I have more faith in the band as people than to just assume they jumped on the bandwagon to make money. Quite honestly, I am not sure what anti-American bandwagon you mean pertaining to music - I don't recall many bands being anti-American and successful to create a bandwagon for them to jump on, but then again, I tend to shy away from the radio, so maybe you know something I don't.

First - you can't say that Jesus of Suburbia doesn't have some air of narcissim to it (You can say it's about "Jimmy," but if taken out of context...). Nor him standing in crucifix pose on stage.

*Rolls eyes* Yes, because clearly playing a part on stage to empower the song is the same as saying, "I'm Jesus, worship me." And if you talk about the song itself, if anything, it paints Jesus I a depressing light, not a wonderful, shiny, son of god light - why would Billie want people to compare him to a depressed Jesus?

Why are you being so defensive about the guitarist? Damn, all I said was I thought he should get more credit... You GD people are so easy to piss off. As for Tom, what I see is Mark saying that Green Day was an influence on them.

I'm defensive because it makes me angry to see people think he deserves more credit than Billie - now I may have misread your post, but that's what it sounded like you said. But if you meant he deserves more credit in general because he is basically invisible, then yeah, I agree...but it shouldn't be forgotten who wrote the guitar parts. And, 'you GD people'? To clarify, Tom never stated that he had not heard any of the songs off of American Idiot. He said:

Then they tried to go mainstream, go with grain. You can claim that Tom Delonge is focused on war, too, but at least he has a fucking reason: His brother is serving as a Navy SEAL in Iraq. What's more, he's played over there, supporting the troops. Where's Billie Joe? Sitting over here, saying "Fuck Americans." He's too good to go over there. Maybe he's the one who should pull his head out of his ass. Tom's just excited. He's making the best of a crappy situation. blink was his life, and he's excited he's found something else take its place. You can't say that if Green Day broke up, you wouldn't want the same to happen. Hell, right now, Billie Joe compares himself to Jesus. (And I think their second guitarist should get more credit that he does)

Oh, by the way, Tom has stated many times that his main influence was the Descendents. If you knew anythig about music, and actually looked at the stuff Tom wrote, you'd see that it was heavily influenced by them. They've even done a cover of a Descendents song ("Hope")... In fact, now that I think about it, they've covered pretty much all of bands that have inspired them, even Screeching Weasel... Unfortunately, I don't see Green Day in that lineup. And really, why is this pissing y'all off so much? He just said he didn't listen to the new album, because he doesn't like that kind of music anymore. C'mon.

It's totally possible that Green Day isn't his kind of music, anymore. He mentioned Pink Floyd a lot, and if that's the kind of phase he's in, it can certainly follow that Green Day doesn't fit his taste right now. It's perfectly rational for someone's musical tastes to evolve, as I think his music has shown in the past few years (from what I, as a non-fan, have heard). I think he's definitely trying to move on from his past, and Green Day was a big part of Blink's past, what with constantly being compared to each other. I know Blink was somewhat influenced by Green Day, but that doesn't mean Tom ever had to be their biggest fan.

Green Day has sold 5.4 million American Idiot albums as of April (closest I could come to the date), and Enema of the State has sold 7.7 million (unknown date). On Blender, their two reviews (Greatest hits and the untitled CD) get four and five stars. The only four-star Green Day CD wasn't actually a CD, it was just their live performances. The rest were two/three stars. Dookie has, however, sold 10 million copies, and is a really good CD and deserves it, in my opinion (I have no qualms with Green Day back in those days). blink-182 pretty much outsold or met all of the other albums. (Oh, and even I'll admit that blink sucks live).

Bah. Everyone's loved GD at one point or another. I personally own 5 of their albums (not bragging, just stating that I don't dislike them.) I only dislike AI Green Day.

Quietus, since I'm tired of quoting, I'll respond directly. You know what you said. The only part of your argument I have issues with is the Jesus thing. It does seem like Billie's trying to say he's some sort of martyr. I don't know. I could honestly be looking way too far into that one. And Tom never said that Green Day didn't influence them. He said "I'm inspired by Green Day's success, but their music doesn't really touch me. It's not my kind of music." As in, he's outgrown Green Day. He's inspired by the fact that they're successful, but he's just not in to them, anymore. It no longer "touches" him. He never said, "No, Green Day never influenced me." I imagine it could be taken like that, but then a lot of stuff Green Day does/says can be taken in different ways.

I saw Meet The Barker's for like five minutes, and it pissed me off. Their little daughter was standing at the top of the stairs yelling something, and his wife was like "go to bed, go to bed". Goes to show that they can't raise kids for shit...

...Anyway, it is okay for people to change music likes and interests. But, to go ahead and say something like that, especially coming from someone who decided to go on tour with Green Day and was a big fan at one point, it is pretty sad that all of a sudden he doesn't like them anymore. Why, is it because he is jealous that Green Day is actually getting somewhere and his band broke up? And, how could you have never heard any AI... I mean, come on, so much of it has been played on the radio now. Mark is the only one who I can say I ever liked from Blink 182, though I was never a fan of them except for their hits.
