"MATLOCK DEFENDS GREEN DAY"

http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mn...0day_14_02_2006

"Former SEX PISTOL GLEN MATLOCK has stuck up for punk proteges GREEN DAY, after his ex-bandmate JOHN LYDON dubbed them "a w**k outfit".

Lydon - also known as JOHNNY ROTTEN - claimed the band had stolen the term punk and reduced a political movement into a simple musical style.

But Matlock insists the most important thing is they entertain.

The bassist says, "I think they are just doing what bands do. When Green Day first came out I thought it was kind of funny that there was this Californian band doing this very English sound.

"But I went to see Green Day with my son, who's a fan, and it was very impressive." "

just thought i'd throw that in for fun.

^ Yeah, I've seen that one before.

Actually...I think it might have been posted on here as a thread. Either way, it's an interesting tidbit of information.

hehe.

1) Mr. Lydon pretty much made this same exact statement back in 1994 to MTV or something. Google it, honest.

2) Mr. Lydon does not like anything or anyone at any time. That's kind of his shtick.

I like Sex pistols and I like Johnny Rotten, but i have to say, he sounds reeeally bitter. That's so sad. He needs to quit whining about everything.

"I was a young boy that had big plans Now I'm just another shitty old man I don't have fun and I hate everything..."

hm, i wonder if The Grouch is written about Johnny :D

I love the sex pistols and I think they did a very good job since they apperantly couldn't play their instruments and so on, blah blah.

But let's face it, John even said at one point that the clash weren't punk and that they just copied Sex Pistols.

He's probably just bitter and sick of the whole so called punk movement or something so it's pretty natural that he's now bashing green day since they've grown big and are called "punks".

eh he just needed something new to complain about, old people get like that.

It's not like he invented Punk he just made it mainstream basically.

I think it's disrespectful, I mean Green Day were his fans and he then bashes his fans for starting a movement. It's not Green Day's fault they got popular and they never tried to be the sex pistols. I cant see the problem here.

I hate this whole 'genre' thing. It bugs me. In the fantastic words of Paul Mcartney "There are only two types of music; good and bad." I agree with that strongly, and in my opinion Green Day are good. :D

Then how would yoi organize music in record stores ? It'd get awfully confusing.

No, it would be like this : Rock - Good/Crap (no middle ground)

Punk - Yes it is/ No it isn't/ Sell-out/Wtf is punk?

Emo - Bearing Up/ PMT/ Suicidal

Rap - Dick Songs/Songs about dicks/I get laid a lot since I became wealthy

Everything else could just go in a big bin and fend for itself.

The only confusion I see arising is in the Punk section, where there could be a rush on the sell-out stuff, and then it would be sold-out; but it would be - poetic.

It's your choice, babe! :D

Sooo ... where do you come from and what's going on there? Your profile and your welcome thread aren't really that informative...

Never know the next album might be back to basics!?

You never know! In any case BJ's ass has regained some sex appeal in the last few days... at least that's what I'm guessing :D

Johnny Rotten is just a washed-up, bitter old punk. He sold his fucking dignity on I'm A Celebrity, not to mention the filthy lucre tour he did with the band a few years back.

I'd say the new york dolls created punk more than the sex pistols.

Agreed. And Green Day owe nothing of their sound to the Sex Pistols, they owe it more to the British band of the 60s and early 70s, such as The Kinks and The Who, and a little American band called The Ramones...

Yep, the NY Dolls were before the sex pistols, but the sex pistols made the 'punk image' big....mainstream, so they got credit, but if you take time to research you'll find that the new york dolls did it before the sex pistols, another band probably did it before the new york dolls too, but I don't know.

Lydon - also known as JOHNNY ROTTEN - claimed the band had stolen the term punk and reduced a political movement into a simple musical style.

Punk never belonged to anyone except to the collection of people who wanted music to be risky, exciting, and confrontational.

And punk wasn't a political movement, it was a motley collection of left wing ideals. One of the central concepts of punk was anarchy, which is a political movement that completely eschews politics (if that makes sense).

Bollocks to Johnny Rotten.

He disses everyone, so in my opinion his comments are irrelevant. He also did 'I'm a celebrity get me out of here'. Thats the epitomy of mainstream conformist drivel or sooooo not punk. He has lost all credibility and is looking for attention, don't give him the time of day.
