Jimmy's_Rebel
The Ramones were a far better punk band than the Sex Pistols ever were - even Billie Joe said that all the Sex Pistols were doing was taking the piss out of the Punk rock movement. Lotus Eater
The only thing that confuses me is this: Didn't Billie Joe write something for a recent (well, in the past year) Rolling Stone magazine that featured the 100 most influential artists or whatever, about the Sex Pistols? But still, you can disrespect a member of the band and what he's become and still appreciate the band's music. I guess.
Jimmy's_Rebel
^^ I'm not sure - I just thought it was unfair that this whole thing was printed in Kerrang in an interview with Rotten, and before the interview the K writer put in a quote by Billie who said how influential the Sex Pistols were. I don't like the fact that Johnny Lydon wants everyone to just agree with all his views because he's a little confrontational - i'm not gonna accept it - why should i listen to him, just cause he thinks he has authority?! ~*johanna*~
I will quote Billie Joe on this one: "For me, punk has always been about doing things your own way. What is represents is ultimate freedom and individuality, which basically becomes a metaphor for life and the way you live it. As far as Green Day is concerned, I really wanted the band to form into its own thing and not try to represent all of what punk rock is, because then you alienate people and you alienate yourself." Duh.
justcause
Agreed. If only people actually did reaserch on the Sex Pistols instead of blindessly supporting Lydon, who is the most overrated moocher out there. Their image was the most important thing about them at the time. Oh to shop at a store called Sex, damn right, your hardcore. note: Last line was complete sarcasam. 'Sex' was set up by McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, largely to showcase her talents as a designer. To have a store called that was actually pretty provocative at the time, and bondage played a large part in the visuals of punk - it was all calculated to disturb - believe me, your momma didn't like it! Westwood is a good example of how Brit Punk was much more than music - yet she has more in common with Green Day, in the sense that she didn't stay with bin-liners and safety-pins, she moved on to extravagant, imaginative fashion that took in such things as 18th Century France (mini-crinolines, models with those bizarre historic hair-dos featuring tiny ships, bird-cages, etc!). She made corsetry outerwear, leading to Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' look, and she remains innovative and relevant to this day. The other thing she has in common with the current Green Day is the ability to be punk, and to enjoy fashion as an expression of who you are, not as a tyranny dictated by others. I agree you should research before you judge, but don't confine yourself to the Pistols, or even just to music - punk was much bigger than that ; check out poetry, film, and the politics of the era, and for sure, check out Westwood. PurpleHex
John Lydon is just a grumpy old man giving out it wasnt like that in his day! The Sex Pistols were designed to shock and the novelty wore off soon because they werent that good... Never Mind The Bollocks had its day and then it was over. He's a bigger sell out than Green Day ever were. He's living off the past now.
GeekStinkBreath54
oh god...its another case of the "Is Green Day Punk" issue....this time using "plonk" instead of "punk". these arguments are pretty stupid. its just music. thats all. if you like, well thats great. if you don't, other people probably don't really give a shit about it. YAY! exactly! I guess. WilliamMattar
I continue to believe that John Lydon has completely lost it.I love the Sex Pistols but he's just creepy.
King Of Some Island
Nobodys really cared about the Sex Pistols since the 70's... The Clash and The Ramones were way better and could actually play their insturments, they diddnt need to publicly bash GD or other new punk bands to keep their image alive, Their music spoke for itself. ..whatsername..
I think its pretty harsh to say something like that: "they're bandwagoning on something they didn't come up with themselves. I think they are phony." Pleanty of people are playing a style of music that they didn't come up with. yeah i totally agree. that was the part of the article that i was like jfdgjjfjndhfvg hWTF?!?! fjhgdfjgbdnf pretty much everyone these days is playing a style that they didnt come up with. all the styles of music would have died if no one newer or younger had heard it, liked it, and started playing it which is what green day did

BitterSweetMigraine
The Sex Pistols weren't the ones who invented punk you know, and John Lydon shouldn't act like they did. (I don't have anything against the pistols, I like em you know, they make great music) The first punk band is and will always be the Ramones. And the Sex Pistols were inspired and so were Green Day. So John should shut his mouth they were inspired by something and so were Green Day. I guess nobody could ever say who's punk and who's not, with all these genre's nowadays, like wtf is emo and screamo? Who thought of that? I mean you don't know what's real anymore. Joey Ramone said something like this: "Punk isn't about the clothes you wear or what you look like. It's about doing your own thing, it's about the attitude and the music." Anyway he said something like that.

punkrock-chick
So they are making people more aware about politics and making maybe certain people open their eyes about it, who maybe otherwise wouldn't have. Which is what most punk bands strive to do...or at least sing about how fucked the government is. He's just mad that Green Day got more success than the Sex Pistols. yea, i bet their just really jealous sex pistols will never be as good as green day, and never as hot!
JakeyBoy
This was posted on GDUK: http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.ns...lonk_08_02_2006 "SEX PISTOLS frontman JOHN LYDON has lashed out at rockers GREEN DAY, accusing them of stealing the term 'punk'. The singer - who performed as JOHNNY ROTTEN - claims the American band has reduced a political movement into a simple musical style. He says, "Don't try and tell me Green Day are punk. They're not, they're plonk and they're bandwagoning on something they didn't come up with themselves. I think they are phony." Referring to his band's battle with the police and censors during its heyday, Lydon adds, "The government's against you, the police are on you. "So there we are fending off all that and it p**ses me off that years later a w**k outfit like Green Day hop in and nick all that and attach it to themselves. "They didn't earn their wings to do that and if they were true punk they wouldn't look anything like they do." " What do you think? With what they wear? Punk style changes. I'm fully loosing my respect for him now...

CaseyLane
Why do we have labels in the first place? How about we try this...everyone does what they want, how they want, and screw what everyone esle thinks about it, and no one "is" anything, they're just what they want to be.
