Marsupial
WIthout a doubt. I think before Green Day, I really had no musical direction (if that makes any sense); I mostly bought those 'Now' pop CDs for my listening pleasure or I would listen to old Britney Spears. I was young when I got into Green Day, though, like twelve years old or something. After I first watched the Boulevard of Broken Dreams video, I was hooked. Green Day introduced me into alternative rock music. Had I not tuned into that music video before school one day, I would never like half the bands I listen to now. Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love
Hmm, kind of. They mostly set my taste in music, not really change. At first I didn't care about music at all (primary school), I just wanted to know the stuff the popular kids listened to (Pussycat Dolls, stuff like that) and I don't remember liking or disliking any music, then I just kind of put some of my parents' CD's on my iPod (I got an iPod even before I listened to music - I just wanted one because everyone had an mp3 player and therefore I wanted one too, and my mom had an iPod and said it was really good, so I got one too (for my birthday). This was before iPods got really big here), which is...I don't really know what genre it actually was, but it was all very soft music. Then I started to listen to the radio and started to prefer poprock and occasionally a rock song over the other music, that was the first time I started really picking music I liked (or well, somewhat liked) instead of just going with whatever was available. Also somewhere around or before that, add in little band obsessions with Avril Lavigne and McFly. And then I discovered Green Day, which lead to my musical taste now. Fortunately, haha. St. Jimmy 7234
I used to listen to a lot of classic rock like AC/DC and stuff Not that I don't dislike those bands anymore, but Green Day just happened to be more my style.

For Lack of a Better Word
Well, back in the Dookie days Green day's video's were played on MTV like crazy and today they are still on there from time to time. So Green Day's MTV stuff too. Well yeah, but you've got to admit that the videos they play on 'music' channels have never been shittier than they are today. If it's not Lady Gaga in her underwear, then it's some wannabe rapper surrounded by five other bimbo's. So thank god something like Green Day does show up from time to time But maybe I wouldn't have hated these kinds of popular music this much, if I hadn't discovered Green Day and punk rock. Once you're used to their sound, there seems to be no turning back...
Katie86
Yeah, they totally changed my taste in music. Before Green Day I listened to basiy anything on the radio. After I started listening to Green Day I basicly stoped listening to the radio all together.

I just wanted to mention that Green Day were once played non stop on MTV too. ^^ I guess when some of us got into Green Day MTV was already taken over by boybands and whatnot. Shaekwon
They opened me up to rock in general. Before I only like a few songs here and there, but I was mainly a hip hop kid. Which I still am, and proud to be. (Probably gonna catch some hate for that) Now I'm constantly on the prowl for more great bands to listen to. Kristina.
Yeah,Green Day totally changed my music taste. Before I discovered Green Day, I used to listen really crappy music. I hadn't any taste... I was about 11-12 and there were hits like Crazy Frog,O-zone or Aqua in my mp3 player. I had no idea about any rock or punk rock bands... Then I started to listen Avril Lavigne.. ( I really don't like her now,but it was the first step to better music ) and then I finally discovered Green Day...since this time I started searching for more rock, punk and metal bands and I found myself in these music styles I'm really thankful to Green Day for saving me from the emptiness of pop music
xjernpqvrnbfv
Before I started listening to Green Day, I wasn't really into music at all. There was just no band around that had a good sound or good lyrics. And then I found Green Day and they introduced me to the whole world of punk rock and rock music in general. yay

Naah, you totally shouldn't be afraid to catch hate just for liking something. I think people should listen to whatever feels good to them and what makes them happy (in my previous post I slightly exaggerated in expressing the things that dón't make me feel good). And I know, it sure is fun to keep discovering more new bands and songs you like
*Maria_Laura*
Yes they have ! :] I started listening to Green Day when I was about 10 or so my older cousin introduced me to their music and after I started getting into punk like the Ramones quite a lot, and alternative rock as well. 1039slappygirl
Kinda Before I got into GD I used to listen shitty music such as Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, and most of my brother's music, which at that time consisted of Linkin Park, Limp Biskit, Evanescence, and... other bands (?). So when I started listening to GD's music, and after I read their influences, I started listening to the The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash and other bands I still like a lot today, so then I read somewhere (GDA, though) about their project bands and started buying PHGP's CD's (same as The Network's Money Money 2020) , so I guess the answer is that they've helped me find out my own music genere and my own artists, without even knowing
Carnation
Oh, haha, definitely definitely. When I was a few years younger, I was a complete techno-electro music addict. Then, I started listening to more commonly listened to artists (can I really call them that?) like Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, Pink, and a few others. But, when I got into Green Day, it sort of expanded my tastes, kind of allowing me to check out more artists and give music I never thought I'd listen to a chance. But, I admit, The Network's sound/music kind of feeds the little techno-electro lover within me.

Hermione
Kind of. Before I listened to Green Day I listened to rap all the time, plus a tiny amount of rock. Now more than half of the music I listen to is Green Day, but the rest is still rap plus a little bit of other rock music. So all that's really happened is the amount of rap has been cut down by half and replaced with Green Day. The real difference is I used to be much more passionate about rap music, I was really heavily into it. I still love it and love listening to it, but my passion lies with Green Day now. Green Day hasn't stopped my enjoyment of rap, but it has replaced it as my obsession.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love
This thread is learning me new things; that Westlife isn't Dutch. For some reason I've always thought that because the concept of internation just didn't really occur to me unless someone told me an artist was from a different country, and as soon as I got to the age I was allowed on the internet (10/11-ish) I didn't ever think of them anymore so I never looked it up either. So they've always been Dutch in my mind until now. edit: oh and on topic (although I already did my post on that), yes, they kind of did. Not drastically as I was already sort of on the path to rock (I was into poprock mostly when I discovered Green Day, they really kicked it into high gear regarding my musical taste. It mostly got louder and louder xD), but they did change my taste. They mostly introduced me to a whole lot of other bands next to Green Day, and I liked all of those bands too. GDM
They didn't really change my musical tastes, just reintroduced me to punk, which I hadn't listened to really since the 90s. And with them, I've discovered so many bands that I didn't know about. They are certainly a gateway drug to punk! lol. I should also probably say that I hate listening to the radio, so I didn't get a lot of music for a long time. New York radio sucks hairy balls... Bad Brain Teh
Before I heard Green Day i used to listen to country. Thats just what my parents and older brother liked so I just picked it up. The first time I heard Green Day I thought they kinda sucked. After a few times of hearing it I started to like it and started to get more into their stuff. Now aside from Green Day I listen to more alternative indie kind of stuff and some pop-punk stuff, but not much. I also like older stuff like CCR and The Beatles. So did listening to Green Day change the music you listened to as a whole? Or were you already into that kind of music when you found out about them? They changed my taste tremendously! Before I listened to really bad Hip-Hop and Rap (like Soulja Boy and crap). Then all it took was some American Idiot to slap some sense into me. Then I started playing guitar and joined a band. They didn't just change my taste in music, they changed my life!
BringMoreKnives
If i didn't discover Green Day (GOOD music) when i was 8, i'd probably be listening to that 'bubble-gum pop' shit. Scarey thought.
