Tinka
because 10 year olds want to feel "punk" so they go to green day sites and annoy true fans that have known and love green day before american idiot I totally agree with you.
Sazzrah
Yeah it sucks, I just can't get used to it - I don't really use the forum anymore just joined the club for the videos and stuff. LiveGreenDay
Even if it was wonderful and perfect, I couldn't get past the fact that fans are being charged $20 just to be fans, just to participate in a site that is basically publicity for the band. Is there any disclosure as to where the money goes and who it benefits? Aren't there at least 10,000 members? That's $200,000, not small change. Well, the Idiot Club isn't the first fan club to charge. No one is being forced to pay. But it's not like the $20 is pure profit, there's stuff like ticket giveaways, month giveaways, bandwidth etc. etc. The money, as far as I know, just goes to the band. And I have absolutely no idea how many members there are at the site. The site says about 40,000, but Slender Fungus, the site that runs GD.com, claims a large amount of those members haven't paid yet.

netty
okay.... as for the ten year olds. if you werent like that at age ten... be grateful you had a decent education, knew internet etiquette or wahtever it is and knew how to behave on line so you could avoid flaming. I was totally new to the internet when I first joined the so called official forums. didnt have a clue what I was doing but atleast was old enough to poke around and see what each of the buttons did before pleading ignorance and asking for help. and I had an internet tv. that was the worst form of dial up believe me. and for those who want to join the fan club for free. you want free? go dumpster diving. you want green day shit for free? go dumpster diving in their bins. all you`ll get is tetanus and a restraining order. an old english saying for you guys.... "you dont get owt for nowt!" you want something... then more often that not you will have to pay for it. if you cant afford it. get a job. if you cant get a job. stuff shit. somebody at some point made a point about not having to pay for being a member on the idiot cllub and said something about some of these people might nto be able to afford a tv. erm... what??? they can afford a pc and get on line? but not a tv? sorry but all this gets seriously on my tits! I`ve never had anything for nothing. anything I have I have had to work my arse off for. either I`ve paid for it or my parents did. and my parents had to work for everything they ever had, just as they taught me to do. people can sit there and post member numbers, work out what they might have got from membership fees. Andres and Courtney maybe can have some idea about how much it costs to run a hugely popular website, but an official site?? you guys dont have a clue about how much it costs them to keep greenday.com on line. you dont know who pays for it. you dont know how many professional web designers they have talked to who billed them. you can speculate all you like. and yeah, you can bitch all you like. I cant stop you. green day dont owe anybody a damn thing! not a fucking thing! nto a free fan club. not free t-shirts. not free tickets. and they really dont have to kiss your fucking arses for being fans. you guys owe them way much more than they owe you. respect. privacy. and the freedom to do what they do best without some fuckwit coming up to them and saying "yo fanclub is shite. i shudnt av to pay maaan" or whatever else. sorry but this crap pisses me off. ILoveTableArt
That was fantastic Netty. Cracked me up. I was thinking about joining the Idiot Club- I've heard great and bad things about it. netty
okay. at the end of the day, what you give to a communisty is what makes is. you dont have to bitch, complain to make somethign better. you have to give a little bit yourself to be part of it. if you arent a true part of the group, even if you paid the fee, you dont really have the right to critisise. sorry for my spelling but like andres I have my own problems right now and I`m using drink to numb the pain. if you want the green day fan base to be better, then quit bitching and start helping! forget how cool you are. forget how much you knew when you got on here. and remember that we are all here because of one band. if a question is asked. answer. if you have the urge to be bitchy. shut it and let some one with patience answer. no green day fan, no matter how much they know, no mater how many gigs they have seen, no matter how much they spent to see them is any btter than any other. learn to give people. learn to live with your fellow fans. once you do that, you might just find the rest of the world isnt half so scarey. Guest Immortality
Netty, I can understand band merch not being free. But access to a place to talk about your favorite band should be. A place to find people with the same interests and share their love of a band shouldn't have a value put on it.
Fuzz
Yay. That was great netty. Drunken knowledge from you is better that 80% of the sober stuff here. Netty, I can understand band merch not being free. But access to a place to talk about your favorite band should be. A place to find people with the same interests and share their love of a band shouldn't have a value put on it. I think she made a very valid point that it costs them lots of money to do stuff like that. And it's kinda greedy to ask for them to give us a place to talk for free just because we are their fans and they don't really owe us anything. Just because we buy their albums, go to their shows, and they make lots of money doesn't mean they have to give us back more in return. We do that because we like their music and what they stand for. YouGot409InYourCoffeeMaker
The best things in life are free, and this forum is better than that one. I don't really feel the compelling urge to join any sort of fan clubs. The only fan club I joined was Madonna's because her fan club members get first picks of her concert tickets which are near impossible to get. There has to be some sort of incentive for me to join. I know they don't owe us anything. But I just feel wrong assigning a vaule to my love for a band. It seems silly. And while I know it pays the bills, GDA/GDC gets by with ads and voluntary donations. All I'm saying is that it doesn't have to be the way it is, and it's fine if they want to do that, but more people will probably stay here longer. You offer free, better, services for the same band. I'm just pointing out why I personally didn't join, and why many people probably did not.

mbk
The reason why the Idiot Club should be free is simple economics: the site exists to provide publicity for the band! It exists to generate interest in the albums, concerts and merch that the band makes its money on. Therefore even if it were free for fans to join, they still would expect to be making money on it via the added sales. It's basically an advertising site. That's why it's wrong for them to charge. I will not pay to look at the band's advertising! (And the fact that they don't disclose who gets the money is not a reason to give them a pass, it makes it much worse.) I don't really see the source of conflict here. What makes this any different from a concert or t-shirt? Both exist for the purpose to make money and get people to buy things. That's why there's concession stands at a show and the name of the band on a shirt. Green Day is not the first and certainly won't be the last band to create a fan club that costs money, so I don't understand the outrage. Your money gets you cool little videos, nice giveaways that aren't available elsewhere and a chance for a little interaction with the band when they do the Q&A's, not just a website that has "GREEN DAY IS COOL! YOU LIKE GREEN DAY! BUY ALL OF THE ALBUMS!" all over it.
justcause
I wish I could remember where I read this, but for what it's worth - Tre was commenting on their recent success, and their teen fans. When you buy a shirt or tix, you're getting a tangible product, with the club you know kids are joining because there's the slightest chance they'll feel a tiny bit closer to the band in some intangible way, and it seems to be preying on that feeling. LiveGreenDay
I'm sure it's the same for the people that go to a show and stand at the front so they can maybe get a glance from Billie. But it's business. That's all it is. They see a chance to make money, and they go for it. If the band feels the only thing I'm good for is my money, I don't really care.
