I'm sure it's the same for the people that go to a show and stand at the front so they can maybe get a glance from Billie.

But it's business. That's all it is. They see a chance to make money, and they go for it. If the band feels the only thing I'm good for is my money, I don't really care.

i just don't get why everyone's saying all this now. Before ai i always used to think that green day were "money grabbers in the making" (i mean they might of been money grabbers then, but it wasn't as obvious as it is now) and now look at it, for once i was right :D I still think the idiot club should be free and i don't care what anybody says IT SHOULD BE FREE!!! :(

Um, I guess you don't realize they've had a fan club of some sort that cost money since 1995...

yeah i knew that. I mean they were money grabbers in general and i've always thought that the idiot club should be free. That's why i've never joined.

It cost $5 for life! That's a bit different from $20 a year. It would basically cover some minimal overhead and that's all.

Well imagine all the idiots that would end up on there if it was free. It would be like this place, kind of.

It also didn't have the costs of a website.

Oh please, it doesn't cost a few hundred thousand dollars a year to run a website. I f anything the old club cost them more to have people physically sort through the piles of mail.

No one is saying there isn't profit being made, but running the Idiot Club website does cost a lot of money. There is a considerable amount of videos, as well as the pictures and all of that crap. Slender Fungus was also not a cheap company to hire, I'm sure.

Anyway, debating this won't result in anything worthwhile, so I'm done with it.

Well i know it's gonna cost them money. They pay people to keep it up and all that, there's no question that it could be pricey. But unless Green Day makes under $40,000 dollars a year each, I dont see the problem with paying to keep up a site.

So I was just thinking there's about 50,000 members, at $20 each. That's a million dollars :o

true fans can be after AI too!!!!!!!!! it just depends if u actually care or not..

like i admit that i liked gd after AI..but i'm a true fan..and no one can say otherwise!

i know lotsa things bout them and luv their music...and them! not only

cuz they are popular rite now! so stop being a bitch!!!!!! :verymad:

Exactly! i've heard of Green Day before AI, but i've never actually really known them. I bought American Idiot randomly off a shelf cuz i listened to it at the store and thought it was good. I didnt even know it was them until they suddenly become the topic of the year. I'm not like the stupid 10 year olds trying to be punk. I have most of their alnums now and I think I'm a true fan. Even if i started liking after AI, doesn't mean I dont truly appreciate them...because why else would I be here?:thumbsup:

(sorry if this isn't about the Idiot Club forum)

I agree with you both - respect should go to whoever earns it, no matter what their age is. The next time someone flames you about you post-AI status, give them two words -

Sweet Children.

How old were the guys who started that band ? Maybe your age?!!

Okay. I understand that it's not an outrage, that it's fair business, and that it's not all profit. I understand that the band doesn't owe us a free fan club. All I'm saying is, it would be nice if they did it for free. Because they can, and it would be a nice thank you to the fans. After all, we made their success possible. We're what made American Idiot a milestone instead of an underappreciated masterpiece.

I know, I know. The band isn't perfect, and we can't expect them to always do the things that we want. But that doesn't stop some of us from being a little disappointed by something like this. "Business opportunity" just doesn't sit well with me.

Sure, many many bands do the exact same thing. But (I'm gonna go with a mclaren argument here) you're using the actions of others to justify their actions, and that just isn't good justification.

Ultimately, it isn't wrong. But that doesn't mean it's the best thing to do. I mean, a free fan club. How cool would that be? They would be THAT band that does nice things for their fans free of charge, because they're not really about the money.

And anyway, about the cost of running the site. How about they charge enough to pay the overhead, and nothing more? Why do they need profit? I think a lower price would be a good middle ground, because it limit the people joining to sincere fans without draining them $20 every year.

Agree with you - it just doesn't sit well with me either. I figure if I was to pay them the 20, first of all I would have to not respect me, and then I would have to not respect Green Day - so!

They've got to know that goes against their whole ethos, like when they used to cut their ticket prices to the bone so that people could get to see them.

But then this is not about music, it's about fan stuff, and I suppose they can't continue the rather sweet relationship they used to have with their fans, now that things are so fucking mega; it's just one of those things that are a downside to success.

Anyway, it doesn't impact at all on the way I appreciate GD, because it doesn't affect their music. Maybe they keep all the business shit in a separate little box in their heads, and let other people take care of it.

What Billie is doing with words and music -and where he's taking it- is what's important, and that he should be free to be focussed on that.

Wow, nothing about what is actually good about the club. Anyone have anything positive to say? Like how about what kind of merch do you get from it? Are the videos and the audio files any good? Is it worth the $20 overall? I want to know more about it, not 13 pages about how there are 10 year olds on the Idiot Club Forum and how bad the forum is - that's not all there is to it...

The club is pissing me off lately.

The band has been "on holiday" for about two months now, I think it's about time to get some Q&A. I mean, it isnt even like their busy right now. They answered questions every month even when they were on tour, but apparently they can't now.

strange.

and, news updates have been rare. And when they do update, its completely useless, nothing important. I'm happy the beginning of the month is soon, I'm hoping they'll have good exclusive videos to make up for the boringness lately.

And yeah, the forums suck there. I thought when I first joined everyone would know a ton about Green Day there. But that was wrong, about 98% don't know shit about the band. They also make these little societies and show their memberships in their sigs.

Fucking dumb.

The band doesn't owe you anything. They'll answer questions if they want to.

When I was ten years old, I doubt I would've even been allowed to listen to Green Day. I was still into the Backstreet Boys. :P

  • 2 weeks later...

i just want to ask, what kind of pictures are up on the idiot club? Do they have pictures from award shows like the "MTV music video awards" and do they get updated when there's new pictures or do they have the normal promo pictures and that's it?

yeah you get me as the most hated mod on a green day forum.

as for that crap about the guys having been on holiday for two months..... so what! after the amount of time they spent away from home, under the spot light, being chased around by obsessed fans.... they can take a two month holiday!

just because the rest of the world takes at most two weeks or whatever when we get time from work.. we dont work the hours they do. or under the amount of public scrutiny that they do.

guess what... they left the country, left their phones at home.... time off its time off. just because they dont have gigs and publicising to do... doesnt mean they have to be at the fans beck and call.

quit treating the band like a fucking product and treat them with the respect they deserve.
