Green Day's bad PR

I definitely don't think Green Day has sold out at all. They are in a different phase of their lives and career than they were when they did Dookie...things are naturally going to be different. They would be fools and bad businessmen if they didn't use their musical and creative success to a financial advantage (with merchandising and all).

I know without a doubt, though, that when they put out their next album, no matter how awful or fantastic it is, they are going to be absolutely CRUCIFIED by the critics and maybe by the general public. Their success with AI was so unexpected and globally overwhelming that the backlash is inevitable. I hope they get themselves mentally prepared for it because I'm afraid it's going to be ugly. :/ We can see it's already started.

Geez. What will people say when they make a movie version of American Idiot ? :o

I don;t know. I honestly hope they don't. It'll be after everyone has cooled down. it'll probably take 2 or 3 years.

sure the PR isn't the greatest. to me it's almost like the only reason that a lot of people (who pick and choose from the top 40) like them is because they are different, and people are trying to be different. i think that for many people they just go buy an album and listen to the hit songs then when the band isn't oh so popular they stop. or at least that's what i've observed many of the people at school do....

I don't really ever understand thing's like these proply. From my view, it's not Green Day's fault for doing awesome albums/shows, and for gaining so many fans who will continually request songs so that they eventually become over played, or whatever.

It gets dumb when people have to moan about thing's that at the end of the day don't matter. What ever happened to the music..

i mean, i dont really know what it was like with dookie, but from what i heard AI seems like 10XXX times worse, im really sick of it. green day will always be my favorite, but its time for them to take a break from the limelight.

Ill tell you what this whole thing is like. Ok, say youve got a girlfriend, all the sudden you start getting offers from all these really hot chicks. so you go and do 150 sluts for a year and a half, then come back and expect your old girlfriend to still be loyal to you.

same thing with this. get it, like the girlfriends are the old fans, and all the sluts are the teenies?

i thought it was creative lol.

That was a funny analogy, and I get it too. So double points.

I don't have anything else to contribute to this convo.

Well, somewhat creative, but not a great analogy. I'll give you credit for trying, though. :laugh:

What do you guys think about all the bad PR (public relations) the guys have lately? I mean the Ultimate Guitar thing voting them worst band, I just got an email saying that "Music of the World" Magazine from Australia named Green Day "Sellouts of '05". Lots of their older fans saying they've pushed it too far.

Do you think they'll be able to put out more stuff without people already being tired of them? I remember earlier this year we all talked about the chance that Warner was going to ride GD's popularity too much and it would backfire on them. I think we can safely say thats happening.

I know we've had constant threads debating wether or not they've sold out, but i'm just wondering what do you guys think Green Day should not have done? What do you think they might have overdone?

I`ve said this recently on here... AI = Dookie

Green Day survived dookie. whether they survive this is to be seen. its the same old thing... build `emup and knock `em down.

personally I dont give a flying fuck what these people say. I have bought all the albums... yes I wasnt into them from the start... but once I was... I anticipated each album.... listened to them... and the only times I have actually been concerned over the publics responces has been over the "wake me up" video. and it certainly didnt get the responce I thought it would from the fans at least. I`ve not come across too much negative reaction to it but then I dont go on anti-green day forums.

all I can hope is that green day keep believing in themselves and doing what is right for them. I`m not sure when they are due to re-sign with reprise or look else where... but one thing I will say... the fans demanded so much from the band this last 15 or 16 months... so if anybody is to blame for the over exposure of the band... its the fans and the tv/radio/mag and the record companies... earning mega bucks from green days name.

not the band.

Okay, I read up to page 4, but really, I should be doing HW, so fuck the last two pages.

Movie = bad

Going to award shows = not bad

Merch = not bad

Lookout = not bad

Screw it. They deserve the publicity they are getting, and if you can't be happy for them, then you're one nice fan. It's like you only like 'em when they are struggling, once they get what they deserve, you hate 'em. You bash 'em. It's wrong. Get over it. Merch and buisness decisions does not kill the beautiful music. So just ignore the merch if you don't like it, don't watch the award shows, and shut the hell up. Or, go find another band to praise.

No one can deny they are having a backlash now, but whose fault is that? It's yours, for making such a big deal.

fuck that. a real fan can look objectively at a band and see their errors. people like you would still be defending them if they started writing jingles for mcdonalds.

Exactly right. It's times like this when you see who the real Green Day fans are.

there's a difference between "real fan" and "blindly worshipping idiot".

Who gave any of us the authority to question what they do?

the basic right to freedom of expression.

I personally believe those who have just jumped on the bandwagon and have not got tired of this overexposure by now will get sick eventually. Contrary to what some people assure, I still think it's a matter of time before most of them are all gone and Green Day is out of the spotlight again. It's not that I agree with every step they've taken but I surely don't complain about most of the things people find offesive or "not what old Green Day would do". I do consider constant whining a comlpete waste of time, and I don't know why some can't just stick to liking the music and enjoying it, which is what matters after all. It's true that the band's attitude goes with it but some fans have just decided to concentrate on the bad side of this, on how commercial their music has got and, not wanting to be "part of the majority" for listening to a band that has gone mainstream, have sadly bailed out. I see what Green Day has turned into, I don't deny it and I might not like it entirely but I am not going to leave the music I love to the kind of people who don't know more than American Idiot.

Don't say people like me you fucking asshole. I wouldn't be happy if they started writing jingles for any a fast food resturant. So don't even pretend you know anything about me you prick. I can look at them and see their errors. I admitted the movie is a sucky idea. But they deserve winning the awards they won.

That was pointed at mclaren.

people who say that arent stupid, arent doing it because they are cool... its all down to the huge amounts of pressure that is put on people... by the press... by their frineds... by forums.

or they really believe it. surprisingly people can decide that they think those kind of things without being part subject to outside pressures.

just because people dont agree with you.. you shouldnt brand them fools, idiots or whatever. they dont agree. so what?

this world would be seriously boring if we all thought the same, all liked the same thing. let the people who dont like green day get on with it. ignore the crap they say. if you like green day... why worry about what others say? just say... "hey you dont like them.. but I do. I dont like the bands you like.. but I dont give your grief for it. "

I`d rather enjoy what the band do.... stuff what others say. I can make my own mind up. if others cant... explain your point of view. explain! not ram it down others throats. you guys complain about people doing it to you... so dont do it to others.

do you realize how contradictory this paragraph is? being a businessman is about, guess what? making money. that's not what music should be about. i don't criticize green day for making money, but i do criticize their means for making that money.

Just to state my opinion. I love the material Green Day stuff. I love to get it all. I dont care if there's an 11 year old wearing the same GD shirt i have. I just got back from the store a couple hours ago and picked up a couple new GD posters. When i got into them there wasn't as much merch, and it seemed like i had everything i wanted, and the rest of the stuff was shit. Now there so much of it, i love it.

I think if they make a movie it'll be good. At least i hope so. I don't think i've seen anything Green Day has ever done that I wasn't totally in love with. I think the guys have more common sense than to put their time into something that'll end up cheesy.

I think all this bad PR is coming from people who aren't big fans of the band...obviously. I would be bitter of I had to watch some band I didn't like on TV all the time.

I would be a lot happier if Green Day moved over to Adeline and marketed all their stuff through that. I hate Warner. I think they need to take a step back and understand Green Day fans aren't like any other pop band. Most dedicated fans connect with the guys (or claim to) on a deeper level by understanding their lyrics and what they are/were about.
