justcause
all I can say is " same old same old" seen this all too often. every album brings out the so called " hard core" fans. and the newer fans take a beating. its a wonder the idiot club got the membership it has. just going from the fan site forums reactions towards newer fans. all I can say to the so called hardcore fans.... " hey, you up there on your pedastal. you stuck there up in the conceited clouds. all you do by taking that stance is cut yourself off from the rest of the fan base. give yourself virtigo and nose bleeds. you are no better than the rest of us. if you seriously believe you are better than us. then come back and tell us what it is like when reality smacks you right in the face!" a fan is a fan is a fan. I get impatient with the billie lovers... but I still dont think I have any more right to the band than they do. I couldn't agree with you more, elitism sucks and it certainly has no place with anyone who's even loosely acquainted with punk. Green Day made a point on several occasions over the AI tour of how delighted they were to see fans who didn't know 'Basket Case' or their other old stuff, encountering it for the first time through AI. What band wouldn't be delighted with a huge influx of new fans - it's called remaining relevant! I think people are also forgetting the first time they heard GD, and fell in love with the music - it's not a fleeting thing, it hooks you for life because you just keep finding more to love about it - but everyone starts somewhere. I hate to see enthusiastic younger fans getting their asses kicked because they don't know everything. Older fans should be welcoming them in, and pointing them towards the good stuff. mclaren
I could go into reasons why I think American Idiot is more complex and successful as an album than anything they've done previously, but what does it matter if it won't change your opinion? And anyway, Justcause pretty much shares my mind on this issue, and she's much more articulate than I. Go back and read what she wrote about the album. it's certainly more complex, just not anywhere near as original.
ArmatageShanks39
it's certainly more complex, just not anywhere near as original. it seemed like a mix of nimrod and warning, not as original as everyone is saying They didnt really sellout musically at all. Getting popular like this isnt selling out, but the eyeliner and the uniforms (as soon as it gets really popular) the clothing line, the merch, the constant interviews....thats whats selling out. Its really not a big deal, they just seem more like huge celebrities rather than a regular band now.
ArmatageShanks39
i just read that "kerrang, GD vs Blink" thing. they green day wer huge assholes about that whole thing, it kinda annoys me. I mean, a band that has said millions of times they loved green day and they just basically tell em they suck. Theyve just started to annoy me in general, doing everything they preached against only a few years ago. does anyone think theyll change, or kinda go back to how it was, or do you think theyve gone passed the point of no return? Its just like...theyre bigger than jesus now. I dont see how anyone could forget about this, my Grandma even knew who they were.

That was when people kept saying that GD were opening for Blink, and GD kept snarling back that they were co-headlining - c'mon, the godfathers of punk and the little squeak-voiced watered-down version, they had to go in and kick ass! Jimmy's_Rebel
Warner are fucking assholes about everything and they always have been. I don't think it matters though if people are "bored" with them or something. We can have them back to ourselves - I really couldn't give a shit whether the 'MTV crowd' are bored of them or not. justcause
were GD mouthin blink? if so well in Yeah, just typical rival band shit. Here's Tre and Mike - Billie doesn't really come into the conversation much, he's in his 'I don't talk to anyone before I go onstage' mode. Mike: 'Blink have played with some great bands, you know. Bands such as Alkaline Trio. I think they might be used to being blown away every night'. Tre says GD 'set out to reclaim our throne as the most incredible live punk band there is'. Journo comments that Tre isn't shy about saying GD are stealing the show every night. Tre: 'Well, it's the end of the tour, I don't give a fuck if they read it or not. They can't quit the tour now. That was one of the main concerns actually, that they were going to quit the tour because they were getting smoked so badly. That was something we heard. We were walking on pins and needles to make sure their egos were stroked the right way. We didn't want them to quit the tour. They're good for filling up the seats up front. They're good for bringing in the moms.' and more of the same! Like I said, just band rivalry shit - show-biz. And Blink were always kind of - unnecessary to music, I thought. Jillie Boe.
well i've always hated blink 182 and even though at that time green day were being the biggest assholes ever for once it didn't bother me although this is comming from a green day fan who hates blink 182 so yeah i probabley would say that. Even though it doesn't bother me, i still think the way they acted towards blink was a bit too much. Although blink has a bad habbit of ripping off other bands and sucking so much, i do feel that green day were a bit too hard on them.

jesus the rage guy
I agree that this Green Day era hit everyone hard, very "in the face" as has been said. But all in all, it was good for the group and will ultimately attract more people the next time they release/do something, despite the possible increase of those who are tired of them. Don't you think? the ai era is ending now the funny thing is how the next era is gonna be called...

vintagesuitandtie888
first, of course people are gonna know that billie [if they know any names] if the "guy from green day." its called being a frontman of a band. green day haters will know, green day fans, random people on the street. its just the way things work. think of any random band..you know the frontmans name? second, AI "going too far" since when is writing a rock opera and releasing the ninth [i think its the ninth..im not too sure, dont particularly feel like counting irght now] album of your musical career and still have a idespread fanbase "going to far." thats fucking awesome. ahhh, this thread is annoying me too. if you think green day sold out, or is "going to far" or whatever, you dont have to be on a green day forum. kayy? thanks sorry that was really long. but i am glad there taking somewhat of a break before doing anything else, all this "OMFG I LOV GREENDAY AND BILLY JOE!1111" shit is annoying. shyfaerie
It's not their fault the album blew up. They already had a HUGE fanbase from the years before. And than a whole new generation of kids got into them. So it's like 2 whole generations all into 1 album. Of course the older fans got all "What? People like it? Well than I can't!" and it's sort of a fad to only like bands that no one else likes right now so they lost some fans. But still, that's a lot of people. And of course MTV and all their marketing people are going to milk it. It's not like the guys sit down and say "Ok, lets add 3 more shirts to Hot Topic, ohh and a back pack!! Oh oh oh!! And UNDERWEAR!" No, it's just some people saying "So how much money can we make off of them..." It's so much easier if you don't pay attention to MTV or the radio or anything. Nothing gets "overplayed" or anything like that, and you really don't notice how much of a success the album is until it wins 7 awards. Which is another thing people keeping going on about. They've won so many awards. Well, yeah, who else is going to win it? Simple Plan? Good Charlotte? Hawthorne Heights? In my opinion Green Day deserve the awards a whole lot more than all the other bands out today. Finally, MTV is playing something that's good, that has substance not just "Waaa, my girlfriend dumped me!" And it's cool having them on TV a lot. It sucks watching MTV hoping to get a glimpes of Green Day and all it is is Good Charlotte and Blink 182, which is what it was like just before AI came out, when my friends and I started to get really really into them. The only Green Day on TV was an episode of Loaded every 6 months. So, to me, it's awesome seeing something good on FUSE again. OK, I've strayed way too far from my orrigional reason for posting, so I'll stop now.
enjoiskaterguy
All i know is that if they still wore band t-shirts and goofed around during interviews and made their live show less of a production, i would have a much better feeling in my heart than right now. enjoiskaterguy
They went overboard on more than one thing. The touring was ok, it was ALL the singles off of AI...5? come on, 4 of those were HUGE. Thats almost half the CD. Now theyre killing it with this movie. Sure make the DVD and what not, but man...thats it. NO MORE!!!! Go in hiding for 2 years then come back with another album. Personally...I think when they come back they wont have anything good enough to match AI (by good enough I mean loved by so many people). I want them to bring out stuff like they had in the early 90's. That'll get all the older fans going. But not going to lie, they might flop this next album. lol...I would love to see them flop this next album....then the public eye with reveal who the true fans really are......Honestly I think they should drop everything AI...i.e - their looks, attire, set lists, image, public presence and even drop out of Warner/Reprise....I fucking hate that record company now for ever. Oh my God. You are so full of shit, I can't even believe it. no...actually he/she is not....they hit the nail right on the head........and your a fucking sad person in DENIAL....if you knew anything about what mainstream music erupted around 2002, you would know how it tied with the release of AI and the how/why it got so big...but your problably just some 17 year old girl just wanted to get in billie's pants. You must be so young and ignorant...that is the only understandable excuse for you saying that....I would even bother telling you of bands who better deserve the "godfathers" of punk label above their heads becasue I know you will probably just try and find as much info about them as possible and then in a few months you will have all their cds and preaching your the biggest fan and from the beginning as well <-----huge amount of people do this. Letterbomber
the underwear, the 7 shirts or something at hot topic. yea ..my mom bought me those for X-Mas To me, as long as their music still fucking rocks, and their not trying to be something their not, then I still love them. But, to me a sell-out is someone who goes against everything they believe, for something such as money. Green Day arent into music for the money, or popularity, so I'm happy.
