justcause
What I take comfort from in all of these negative comments is the fact that Green Day are unlikely to give a flying fuck about what people think they should do - isn't that why you loved them in the first place? These guys are about their music - I can't believe people are so superficial in their interest not to have seen the kind of effort put into AI, to produce something of quality, something innovative that would take them to a new era. Guys, they can't go backwards! They can't be the old Green Day, and how would you like it if they did 'the same old schtick again'? They had a hiatus period, for whatever reasons - personal, creative - probably a lot of different things, and when they came back - and remember, they almost didn't come back - they had to re-invent themselves. It's to their credit that they did it so well. If artists have the worth and integrity that Green Day do, they deserve that their fans would stick with them and support whatever direction they take; then you just decide whether or not you still like their music. But to tell an artist what direction you think he should take is first of all arrogant, and secondly means you had no inkling of what he was about in the first place. Green Day's stand has always been that they make music for themselves and to their own standards, and for people to like it is a bonus; that's the only principled way for an artist to behave, the alternative is to try and come up with what your audience wants - and is that what you really want of them? We've always prized them for their honesty - now it seems that was only ok as long as we approved of what they were doing. They're being totally honest again, because this is where they're at now - but that's not good enough any more, apparently. As for the whole look/make-up thing - I can't believe how hung-up people get on this. I think Billie loves it - after all, the guy wrote 'King for a Day' - so maybe we're ok with the notion that he likes a bit of prettiness in his life as long as it's a jokey thing onstage, but no-one can tolerate it real life? Maybe he's had to repress it for all those tough-ass punk years. I think we're fucking tough on our heroes.
mclaren
Guys, they can't go backwards! they did go backwards. they finally seemed to be moving in an original direction with warning, then pop-punk got big in the mainstream again and out came american idiot just in time. Maybe it was just once or twice, but there are pictures to prove it. I know, I know...he didn't have a "look" back then. I'm just sayin. And about that last line...Amen. That's the most true thing anyone's said on this topic.

Lotus Eater
maybe, and now that it's the popular thing to do, he can embrace it. You mean maybe he might feel more comfortable with it now that other people do it, meaning that he might have some insecurities? But...that would mean that he's human! Eh, eh, yeah? go...now...to hell. i havnt lost respect for em. theyre great musicians. Theyre pretty cool people, just sellouts. Theres not much denying it, they even admit it. Hell, if i could id sellout. Maybe not to this extreme, but i would sell out. I just think they had enough fans and money before american idiot. every cd was going platinum and they played pretty big venues. Im sure money wasnt an issue al all. anyway, long live green day, i just hope theyre a little more low key from now on.

The key words being 'in front of a crowd' - many of the most outrageous performers onstage are completely insecure off it; if you saw BIAB, you surely noticed that onstage and off-stage Billie are two radically different entities. justcause
i can't believe you're actually suggesting that billie joe didn't wear eyeliner before because he was insecure about it. And I can't believe we're discussing eyeliner - but it comes up with such regularity, and always in the same breath as the sell-out line, that it's become part of the package. But yes, I am suggesting it's possible - he's never been in any way as outrageous offstage as on, although I would argue with your previous post that he's always had a 'look' of one kind or another - particular shoes, particular shirts, whatever - it's all an identity thing. Lots of guys have it. Just look at the response he's got to the change in his appearance - wouldn't he have every right to be insecure? How on earth did people get so conservative about these things? And yet what she says probably has more truth than any of the explanations you've given. I think he's finally happy with the way he looks for a change. Is that so much harder to believe than your theory of strategically planned image-control, designed to target an audience of white suburban Americans aged 12-24? The key words being 'in front of a crowd' - many of the most outrageous performers onstage are completely insecure off it; if you saw BIAB, you surely noticed that onstage and off-stage Billie are two radically different entities. ~*johanna*~
Green Day has become extremley popular, that's true. They came out with a great album and got a lot of publicity for it. Companies latched onto them and started coming up with a whole bunch of GD crap, stuff that annoyed me because I really have more respect for GD to plaster my walls and body with their faces. I've always felt weird with the whole "worshiping" thing. I don't worship people; I merely appretiate what they do. This recent mania is called "overmarketing" and I don't really think that Billie, Mike & Tre have much control over it. This band means a lot to me because of their music. I love their lyrics, and their amazing talents on their instruments. And they can sure work a crowd! You can tell how much they love what they do when you see them live. They're really passionate. No matter what, I 'll listen to GD. No matter what happens, if they go out of style or whatever, I'll still love the albums they've made. Personally I do not care if a band is super popular or nearly unknown. If it's good music, I will listen. EDIT: But...you know, just cuz I don't worship the band doesn't mean I won't admit they're damn fine. lol

Lotus Eater
feel free to show me where i said something incorrect in any specific post. Well, that would kind of be impossible, since most of what we're expressing here is of the opinion category, not fact. But I can tell you that your conclusion that someone who's adventurous onstage would not feel insecure offstage shows a lack of understanding of the human psyche. Justcause said it best, so I won't go into it further.
Varda
This whole thing confuses me..Doesn`t Green Day deserve to have that success? they have worked hard to the top and now they are..why do the fans not enjoy it? When I first heard Green Day (2000) I was blown away by their sound and their originality and when they came back in 2004 it ws still everything there..The fresh sound, even more improved, as friendly and original as they have always been. Yes, their clothes went to only black and they made more promo, that kinda went to far and I admit that. But that doesn`t make me start mourning about Green Day themselves. I love the band and not the bloody record company. They made a great record with American Idiot and I don`t unterstand why Green Day and the fans should not enjoy that. I don`t know..it´s like walking in circles. I am just torn apart because everyone says something else..I cannot find my own opinion about "selling out"..I just know I fucking love them and I am happy that they have the time of their life. PurpleDay
A lot of you just want green day to be un popular so you: Have a closer view of them at their shows due to less people. You have more of a chance to meet Billie joe without teenies swooming him if he took half a step out in public. AND a lot of you who think like this are teenies yourself who are selfish and don't care about Green Day's success, just your own benefits. And these teenies themselve's are saying "Cant wait till the rest of people like me get over Green Day so I can have them to my own liking. As for AI ending and some of you 'hoping' this will sort out all the teenies'.. It wont, they may be a bit more calm in the next year following Green Day's next album, but I can assure you their 'Hawtness' will bring them all back. That's what bands are today, TRL doesn't help when they play half a minute of the song's on their countdown because their to busy interviewing the bands and helping all the screamings girls see their hero's in person. What happend to being about the music?
mbk
Oh my God. You are so full of shit, I can't even believe it. Love youuuuu!!! mclaren, it would seem you have never listened to American Idiot. You actually think Warning was more original? American Idiot blows nearly every other rock and roll record out of the water! It's incredibly original, filled with unexpected moves, five-part songs, soft ballads that melt into hard guitar riffs, incredibly poetic lyrics... Oh and Netty, consider yourself snogged!
