On this day 8 years ago (21 January 2017), Green Day played in Krakow, Poland on the Revolution Radio Tour.

I remember having a conversation with the staff at Mountain Warehouse in Falmouth about whether a wizard-themed tent for kids would be suitable for camping on a snowy street in Poland (it wasn't and they were worried I was going to die). Fortunately no-one camped overnight. I got there about 6:30AM and was 15th in the queue. There were fans from Finland, Ukraine and all over Poland there. A girl from Warsaw said the ticket and travel costs were an entire month’s wages to her, but it was her first chance to see Green Day and she knew it would be worth it.

People gave out "bang" signs in the queue and everyone held them up during Bang Bang. Billie took one of the photographers' cameras to film them. Scattered was the highlight for me. Such a shame they didn't keep playing it.

Some photos of the queue from the My Rage My Love My Life project:

8 whole years since I missed the Polskibus so I took an Uber from Krakow to Prague (335 miles) to make sure I didn't miss Green Day. The long story I wrote back then:

  Hide contents

I’d heard that Uber was cheaper than regular taxis, but I didn’t even really know what it was. When I found out it was an app, I frantically deleted music and photos on my phone to make room for it. It gave me an estimate of 600zł-800zł, about £130-£170. We had that. It was obviously more than we’d usually spend considering the Polskibus was £11, but it was insanely cheap for what it was (I just checked Uber’s calculator and I guess they got wise to people stupid enough to call an Uber for that, because it told me almost double). So I did it: I called an Uber to take me from Kraków to Prague.

He arrived within a few minutes, a polite and well-spoken young man called Michał, and asked with a smile where we wanted to go. My mum glanced at me and took a deep breath.

‘Well, we need to get to Prague.’

He apologised for his English – which was perfect, I’m sure he just thought we couldn’t possibly be that stupid – and asked her to repeat it. Now he understood, stared at us blankly for a moment and laughed.

‘Praga? Nooo.’

My mum tried to explain what happened and he listened patiently as it sunk in that we were seriously asking him this.

‘Wait. How far is it? 500 kilometres? How much will it cost? Maybe we can do it.’

All three of us struggled to get an Internet connection out there, but I told him what the Uber app estimated and he said that would be fine. He just had to go to his dad’s house to get money for petrol. He reckoned we could get there by 5pm. We told him it didn’t matter as long as we were in time for Green Day.

So, here we were, heading out in an Uber to Prague. It turned out Michał had lived and worked less than ten miles from us in England and his mum still lived there. We passed a bridge that we all thought looked like a bridge in Mansfield. This was his second day working for Uber after moving back. Yes, you read that right, it was his second day working for Uber and two English girls asked him to take them 539km/335 miles to Prague. He was extremely professional and nice about the whole thing, though.

The Interrupters were finishing as we arrived. As much as I’d loved all their sets, I was not going to complain that we’d missed them. Thanks to Michał, the best and most patient Uber driver in the world, we’d made it in time for Green Day.

We were as far back as it's possible to be, but my mum and I had so much fun dancing together there. I still felt that same connection to the band and every word Billie sang. Seeing the full stage with the crowd all around us took me back to my first seated shows that had changed my life so. Around us were people who didn’t know the band well but still watched in awe, and others who knew everything and sang and danced like we did. It was 100% worth getting an Uber all the way from Kraków. I regret nothing.

I can't believe Billie is actually visible on that photo

The Uber to Prague story    That's hilarious, crazy, and also I can totally see myself doing the same in that situation. I bet the guy still remembers that as one of his top interesting stories while working as an Uber

I actually remember the Green Day poster being up on the wall (it was this picture). I grew up within walking distance of Nottingham Arena so I saw it every time I went into town. Sadly I had no idea who Green Day were until about two years later. It’s surreal to think of them playing so close to home. When people ask what show you'd go to if you had a time machine, I usually mention one of the trilogy era club shows, but actually, it'd be this one even though there was nothing special about it.

Exactly! Just sayin', the arena can hold 16,000 people. There's definitely demand for it because when I saw Sum 41 there last year, their pre-show playlist included All the Time, American Idiot and Basket Case, and everyone went mad (which also means they could safely play All the Time). It's right in the middle of England, easily reached from London and Birmingham. There's an airport. Come on, lads!

408b34c67c2f5e74153077e6f05d410c5a39e789

A Thai band called Barbies opened. Impatient fans chanted Green Day's name throughout their set. They started throwing chairs, water bottles and shoes. When Barbies' set ended, a staff member announced that the MBK Hall was well over capacity and that fans shouldn't jump because the floor might cave in. The MBK Hall was located in a mall – which is still there today – and it seemed that might have been why the shops below shut early.

Of course, once Green Day took the stage, the fans did jump. They felt the floor sagging beneath their feet. Fights broke out and people hit each other with chairs. The floor never actually gave way, but someone without a ticket did hit a security guard with a beer bottle until his skull cracked, then broke the door down.

Some fans said it was the best show they'd ever seen. Some said it was the worst. However, almost everyone in MBK Hall that day will agree that they wondered if they were going to die that night.

8 years ago (2 February 2017), Green Day played the Forest National in Brussels, Belgium on the Revolution Radio Tour.

f645a60e57da9c4edb5e514f18c408a0e8fec7db

I really wasn't supposed to go to this show  I saw a friend selling a ticket and impulsively decided to go. I took my luggage with me to uni because I'd be getting the bus all the way from Cornwall to Brussels as soon as my last class ended. I had a group review that morning (where we all shared our photos and gave feedback) and I'd just started doing the My Rage My Love My Life documentary as my final project. Everyone already thought I was insane. Then one of my classmates asked when I was next seeing Green Day. I was like... 'actually, I’m getting the night bus to London to go to Brussels tonight. I just booked it in the library.’ The journey took about 24 hours and I don't think I slept at all until we arrived in Brussels (because I'd convinced @Rumpelstiltskin2000 to join me, of course). Then my alarm went off at 5AM or whenever it was and we went to the venue. It was a warm, stress-free day. The venue actually honoured the number system. We got one of the best spots we'd ever had at the time, almost in the corner between Billie and Mike. I actually took a couple of decent phone pics:

a492602d2cc532f6d1b9e08c3606c03bff41777e

Here's the recap I wrote back then:

'When Green Day came on, one of the guys we queued with was the first fan on stage. Billie snatched his Danish flag and displayed a Belgian one instead (all in good fun, of course).

I’m not someone who really cares about the setlist. I wouldn’t go to so many shows if I found it dull. But when Billie began playing the intro to Troubled Times, the crowd clapping along, I must have deafened the people around me. They’d played it at the previous show in Amsterdam, but I didn’t think they’d ever play it again. It was so powerful live and I will never forget hearing it in a foreign country after impulsively making a 24 hour bus journey from Cornwall.

In Longview, the girl Billie pulled up to sing attached herself to Tré and he had to tell her "you’re here to sing, not make out with Tré Cool!"

Before playing Scattered, Billie announced "it’s Aimee from The Interrupters’ birthday today" before beginning a song it took me a few seconds to recognise. Then I turned to my mum and screamed "it’s Amy!"'

This show was one of the biggest moments in the Indonesian punk scene at the time. The 6,000-capacity venue was over capacity, and kids who couldn’t afford pit tickets were jumping down from the balcony. It was already so packed that people were getting injured – even members of the support act had to step outside for air – when outside, fans who couldn’t afford tickets at all began to break the door down. The security staff couldn’t cope and several people were hospitalised after the show. News outlets and some Indonesian punks were baffled that anyone felt Green Day were worthy of such fuss, but clearly they were!
