Popular Post stories and songs
I saw them at the Tower Theater in Philly 8 years ago today. One of the most special concerts of theirs I’ve been to. It’s an old theater and I thought the balcony was going to collapse every time Billie told us to jump. I still remember watching them perform Still Breathing and feeling blown away by all of the emotion attached to it. It was a really joyful night, very similar to the Saviors Tour in that respect.
solongfromthestars
Today isn't a particularly interesting day since there are only photos of one of the things. On this day 6 years ago (30 September 2018), The Coverups played the Uptown in Oakland, CA. That beard makes Billie look like the love child of one of my college tutors – who will tell you that he saw Green Day at the Garage in 1997, but it must have been the Astoria because they didn't play the Garage in 1997 and as smug as he is about it, I don't think he'd lie – and a bloke who asked if I really have the mental capability to make my own decisions after I absconded from our date. Anyway. Here are a few more photos of the child of Photography Lecturer Who Was (Actually Not) At The Garage and Undateable Mental Capability Man. Spoiler He's going to get kicked off a Southwest flight again for this. But he can rest assured that if he comes to visit his dads, showing everyone your arse is standard – even expected – on Nottingham City Transport buses. 19 years ago (30 September 2005), Green Day played the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, CA on the American Idiot Tour. 24 years ago (30 September 2000), Green Day played the WRZX X-Fest in Noblesville, IN. 1
solongfromthestars
On this day 8 years ago (1 October 2016), Green Day played the House of Blues in Boston, MA on the Revolution Radio club tour. More photos: Spoiler 15 years ago (1 October 2009), Green Day played the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. The GDC thread for this show is still up if anyone wants to read it. I used to see that photo a lot and never knew what it was from. More photos: Spoiler 19 years ago (1 October 2005), Green Day played the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA on the American Idiot Tour. More photos: Spoiler 20 years ago (1 October 2004), Green Day played Zeche in Bochum, Germany on the American Idiot Tour. More photos: Spoiler 24 years ago (1 October 2000), Green Day played the 99X Big Day Out in Atlanta, GA. Other acts included Eve 6, Everclear, Papa Roach, Stone Temple Pilots and Stroke 9. 31 years ago (1 October 1993), Green Day played the Roseland Ballroom in NYC while supporting Bad Religion. The photo on the back of Dookie came from this show. "I saw Green Day live in '93, right before Dookie came out (they were the opening act, Bad Religion was the headliner). Billie Joe explictly stated that Kerplunk! was the sound of a turd hitting the water in the toilet bowl. During the same bit of stage patter, he said that the venue - NYC's Roseland Ballroom - looked to him like a giant toilet bowl. The guy's got a one-track mind, I guess. It was a good show, though. In fact, as good as Bad Religion were that night, Green Day were even better, which was a surprise as I had never heard of them at the time. A few years later, I saw them live again and was less impressed: Billie Joe wasted way too much time on his stupid antics, like spitting in the air and trying to catch it. It got so bad that half the crowd was shouting, 'Play a fucking song!' He did some of that stupid stuff at the Bad Religion show too, but not nearly as much, probably due to their shorter alloted time." – Eddie "Ernie from Sesame Street was on the original back cover of Dookie... the story goes, a grandmother bought Dookie for her grandchildren because she thought it was a children’s album. Whoops. And well... we had to take Ernie off... this photo taken in 1993. We opened for Bad Religion at Roseland Ballroom in New York." — Billie Joe 32 years ago (1 October 1992), Green Day played Rainbow Rocks in Longview, WA on the Kerplunk Tour. And as has been mentioned before, the song Longview is named after the place.
solongfromthestars
On this day 2 years ago (2 October 2022), Green Day played the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. More photos: Spoiler 15 years ago (2 October 2009), Green Day played Le Zénith in Toulouse, France on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. The GDC thread is still up. 19 years ago (2 October 2005), Green Day played the Coors Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, CA on the American Idiot Tour. 24 years ago (2 October 2000), Green Day played Minority on The Late Show With David Letterman. 31 years ago (2 October 1993), Green Day played the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia, PA while supporting Bad Religion. 32 years ago (2 October 1992), Green Day played the Benton County Fairgrounds in Kennewick, WA on the Kerplunk Tour. "This was in 1992, and Green Day played here in a warehouse at the local fairgrounds. That seems funny right there, but at the time I was doing a fanzine and did reviews of most of the local shows. I was a bigger fan of the opening band, a group from Boise, Idaho called the Dirt Fishermen. One of the guys in the band worked at the record store which published a magazine that I wrote for, and he did reviews as well. Anyway, Green Day were just 'the big punk band,' they had a name and were very popular but they were very much indie. No one ever knew what they had in store a year or two later, but because they were still an indie back, I ignored them. I sat on the side and watched, but wasn't in the pit taking pictures. All I remember is that when they started they played the theme to 'Barney Miller' and later in the show they played the song from the old Nintendo video game, 'Rad Racer'. Months later, Green Day were signed among the alternative frenzy and you couldn't avoid seeing 'Longview' on MTV. Yet unlike a lot of bands who were signed, especially by Warner Bros./Reprise (i.e. Faith No More, The Muffs, Mudhoney, Xtra Large), Green Day are still around, now winning Grammy awards. When I became a member of this board a few months ago, it was great reading threads from people who are bringing their kids (sometimes grandkids) to Green Day shows, or I should say, the kids are bringing their parents. If I had kids, I probably would tag along as well, although trying my best to not act a fool. So there, I saw Green Day when they still played at a fairground warehouse shed." — johmbolaya "I was there!!! Partied in their van... Billie was a dick then." — Melissa Sanford "Saw them at our fairgrounds here in Kennewick, WA back in '92 (before Dookie). They were playing with punk bands. The drummer sold me their Kerplunk tape while he was eating Little Debbie Fruit Jammers and drinking a Yoohoo. I still don't know where to find Yoohoo in this town." — TheUplist "Big show. This was well before they were on a major label. At some point in the middle of the Green Day set, the singer, Billie Joe or whatever his name is was holding the mic out to let people say stupid things. He held it up to my face and I tried to make a farting sound in it. I rushed myself and made a really weak farting noise that didn't even carry over the PA and ended up just getting a ton of spit on the mic. He just pulled the mic away from me and gave me this look like I was the biggest jackass ever." — Tim Leingang I like how that last guy said "Billie Joe or whatever his name is" but actually spelled it correctly, which can't be said for everyone who claims to be his biggest fan. I don't think someone does need to know their names at all to be a massive fan, but that's still amusing.

solongfromthestars
On this day 8 years ago (7 October 2016), Green Day played Rough Trade in NYC. Somewhere Now was played for the first time. Revolution Radio was released 8 years ago today. I like the cover art, but I still think they should have used the alternative art. The Youngblood lyric video was also released 8 years ago today. 14 years ago (7 October 2010), Green Day did a press conference in Caracas, Venezuela. More photos: Spoiler 15 years ago (7 October 2009), the 21 Guns music video was released. I think this 21 Guns ad on MSN was from around the same time the video was released. If you've ever wondered what the teen years of a 90s child looked like, this is it. Green Day also played O2 World in Berlin, Germany on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour on 7 October 2009. Interesting that Give Me Novacaine was played in the encore rather than early in the show like it was later. More photos: Spoiler 30 years ago (7 October 1994), Green Day played in Lund, Sweden while supporting Bad Religion on the Dookie Tour. 31 years ago (7 October 1994), Green Day played the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, OH while supporting Bad Religion. 3
Popular Post Cris.
1 hour ago, solongfromthestars said: 14 years ago (7 October 2010), Green Day did a press conference in Caracas, Venezuela. More photos: Hide contents I was there The press conference was in the Hard Rock Cafe in Caracas, which is located inside a shopping mall, in the highest floor. If I remember things correctly (I might not), they held the conference in the terrace of the Cafe, which was mostly full with journalists and possibly people who had been waiting there all day or employees, so I couldn't get in there. But I was in the area just next to the terrace. There are 2 things I distinctly remember about this conference. First, when they walked pass me on the way in or out, there was just maybe one security guy between them and me, and we were standing on the same level (meaning neither them nor I were in a platform or something) and this was the first time I became fully aware of how short Billie is (barely taller than me) 😂 The other thing I remember is being embarrassed about the questions they got asked (I don't remember if I heard the interview live or a recording of it later), because it was like all these journalists had just found out about Green Day that morning, and the level of fan girling from people in the crowd who would not stop screaming "we love you" or "welcome to Venezuela" or stuff like that or just like "Billiiiieee" 😂 I had pretty high standards for journalists and for how fans should behave back then, I would definitely be more tolerant of these things now that I am older and wiser 😂 (I still think the journalists could have prepared better questions, but they were probably were paid peanuts to interview a band they didn't care about, so I get it) EDIT: Hehe, found a video of part of the press conference in YouTube (starts at about minute 1:15 - the first minute and 15 second being a display of the level of fangirling I was talking about - until Tre tells them to shut up ). EDIT 2: This one has some other questions as well as Billie asking local punk bands to send them their tapes, or bring them to the show next day or bring them stickers for his guitars It also has some shots of the crowd and it's nuts, not sure how they managed to get them out of there safely. And as I was watching the crowd I was "there is no way I was there! I would have completely panicked in a crowd like that!" and then I spotted myself in there for the briefest of seconds and remembered this was 2010, about 7 years before the event that gave me PTSD, so of course I was there and I wasn't in panic 😅🙃 2 1

Popular Post Cris.
Where's @solongfromthestars so I can piggyback on her post? Well, 14 years ago (8th of October 2010) was Green Day's first and only concert in Venezuela to date. Pretty easy anniversary to remember as it's also my mom's birthday. I sang happy birthday to her at midnight, because I during the day I'd be in the queue all day and then in the concert. I actually found the post I made back then to recap the show. I was not very active in GDC back then, so I was surprised to find I had posted here, and quite happy too because I didn't remember half the stuff I wrote there, but reading brought a lot of it back. The main highlight being Billie Joe having to save himself during EJN because the kid he brought on stage didn't speak English and didn't know what to do (but was completely adorable). This show was long (and of course I don't say that as a complain, on the contrary), that's why at first I had trouble believing they had played 37 songs in the show in Lyon this year, because I knew it had been less in Caracas, but that that show had been so much longer. And I was to 2 shows of the 21CBD tour in NYC before this, so I knew it was going to be a long show, but it was loooonger than I expected. I've always suspected it's because of how relaxed rule enforcement is in South America, I imagine Billie going "what do you mean the curfew is around midnight, what happens if we play longer? ... You mean, it's okay if we play longer?" 😂 I had heard Going to Pasalacqua and Christie Road before (at least partially) in one of the NYC shows in 2009, but this concert was the first I heard Letterbomb, Whatsername and Give Me Novacaine live I was in a really dark place in terms of my mental health when that show happened, and it was so cathartic to hear those songs that got me into Green Day and that got me through some pretty rough times back in 2005/2006 too. What a welcome relief that show was. And to finally see them in Venezuela after so much traveling for this band was also so exciting, I had given up hope on that happening. Also, absolutely crazy to think that this was the last Green Day show I attended until Bataclan last year. Anyways, I'm sure @solongfromthestars will come with more pics to share from that show 🙂 3

They also played there in 1997. "I met Al [Sobrante] when I booked his band the Ne'er Do Wells and The Shatners (Star Trek cover band). He was a super nice guy and hilarious. The night I booked the Ne'er Do Wells and the Shatners at No Palace Studios on Division and Wood Street, now a trendy hot spot, but in 1993 still a hot bed of crime and gangbangers, Green Day was playing the Riv with Bad Religion and ALL. Al found out about the show and he wanted me to drive him over, so he could picket the show, since Green Day recently signed to a major label. I couldn't tell if he was serious or joking, but I got the feeling he wanted to do it as more of a joke. Plus, how odd would it be to see Green Day's former drummer outside a Chicago show with a sign making fun of the band, although I don't think the kids would know who he was." — Mike Byrne On 10/8/2024 at 10:54 PM, CristhyneS said: Where's @solongfromthestars so I can piggyback on her post? I was wrong. At the end of the second song, a couple of people fell on me, and as I fell onto the stage, I put my hand through a beer bottle. A piece of glass went right through my ring finger. I stood up, pulled out the glass, then freaked, thinking I had lost a finger. The band stopped the show, and the ambulance arrived quickly. I still have some nerve damage, but I can type at full speed again. And I’m semi-famous, as my injury made it to a couple of websites. A month later I saw Green Day again, without hurting my finger. They all signed my ER wrist band, and inspected the scars to make sure I was okay." — The Reynolds Archives That was a very busy day for Green Day. 30 years ago (14 October 1994), Green Day played Corso in Leuven, Belgium on the Dookie Tour. John, thank you. Thank you so much. I love you and God bless your family. ...John Kiffmeyer from Isocracy came up and said, 'I heard you guys were looking for a drummer. My band's breaking up and I really want to be in your band.'" — Billie Joe at Green Day's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction "John just decided this one day to join 'em. And that kind of broke up Isocracy. John and I had gone up to Willits to hang out with Larry and Kain and Tre, and got to know them pretty well. We came back and suddenly John had gotten hooked up with Billie and Mike. I remeber him telling me, "I got this great new band." I was like, 'Really?' 'Yeah, we're gonna be huge. The singer's a genius.' It was like, 'Okay, whatever.' John was always really full of shit about stuff. But then he started playing with them." — Jason Beebout 1
