I was still living in Venezuela, there was no hope in sight that they'd ever play a show there, and my eldest sister lived in Miami at the time, which wasn't too far from this venue. I was turning 15 that year and I made a budget to prove to my family that taking me to this Green Day concert was cheaper than a quinceañera party which are traditionally done when a girl turns 15, or a quinceañera cruise which is a cruise full of other 15 year old girls 😂 (both of which sounded like a nightmare to anyways). So I convinced them. We bought the tickets, I was gonna fly there with my other sister and go to the concert with her. But hurricane Katrina passed through Florida on the day we were gonna fly there, so all flights were cancelled, and we ended up flying to Miami only the day after the show. I was heart broken, I had counted down the days to the show for months and now I had missed it. I really cannot express how devastated I was over this. The story has a happy ending though, but in a few days time haha. Also, I was just at Rock en Seine this Saturday. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen and is still one of my most treasured memories. I touched up my recap about five years ago but it still seems a bit embarrassingly written now. Here it is anyway: "It was like everything leading up to this was a five-second dream. I was sitting in England, then I was suddenly there in the Arizona heat, surrounded by palm trees; hearing Song of the Century, the closest I’d ever been to a stage Green Day were about to take. Around us, the crowd chanted ‘Green Day! Green Day!’ Then the band ran on – Billie with his blond hair and striped jeans, Tré in shorts, perfectly drawn Mike, Jason in a blue jacket – in perfect clarity. ‘Buenos noches Phoenix, ARIZONA!’ I have no words to describe what hearing that for the first time was like. My words caught in my throat as I sang ‘dream, America, dream’ there, in America. I could have cried, broken down in tears of joy, but I danced them away to Know Your Enemy. We were living a dream that once seemed impossible of seeing our favourite band in the United States. In East Jesus Nowhere, Billie pulled up a kid called Alexander, stealing his earmuffs and helping him play his Les Paul Jr. ‘Security, security, get rid of this kid! He’s gonna steal my pot! Alex, do you wanna start a fucking war?’ I was as thrilled as any local with Billie’s every roar of ‘are you ready, Arizona?’ In the Holiday bass solo, the amphitheatre flushed red by lights and scrolling text, Billie ran over to our side. He spotted me, grinned and pointed before noticing a shirt that someone was holding up. He apparently reached out to the fan after the show to ask if he could buy the shirt for $100 and the fan agreed, but only if he would sign the $100 bill. ‘The representative of Arizona now has the floor!’ Pyros exploded with Billie’s ‘bang bang!’ as on the screens, troops marched in black and white. Drum rolls led to Murder City. ‘The clock strikes midnight in A-RI-ZO-NA!’ Then it cut to Give Me Novacaine. ‘Oh, it’s so hot, it’s so hot, I think I’m gonna take all my fucking clothes off. Whoever gets naked tonight gets 50 bucks!’ We chorused ‘heeeeeeeey-ooooooooh!’ to tinkling piano. The crowd waved, at Billie’s command, from the pit to the lawn in sync. Instead of ‘Jimmy says it’s better than here,’ he sang ‘Arizona’s better than California!’ and I screamed approval with everyone else. It ended with ‘give me the entire state of Arizona!’ Billie couldn’t have reminded us where we were any more if he tried. Then Tré began the intro to a ferocious Letterbomb. It was my second favourite song at the time, after only ¡Viva La Gloria! and it was the first time I’d seen it. I went insane. I was screaming, the lyrics, just screaming, turning my voice hoarse and jumping until my legs were weak. (My mum filmed me dancing to Letterbomb haha) ‘This is it! The time is right now! This is it! There’s no fucking job you’ve gotta fucking go to! There is no boss! There’s no bullshit! There’s no computers! There’s no television! There’s no cellphones! There’s no fucking school you gotta report to! This is it! This is the opportunity right now! This is your fucking freedom! Are you with me, Arizona?’ Some fans criticise Billie’s Letterbomb speeches. But you know what? He was right. That was our freedom and I was liberated, with Arizona as we screamed to tell Billie yes, we were with him. As Tré began Are We the Waiting, Billie announced ‘my aunt is out there in the crowd tonight! She’s a resident! Right here in Arizona!’ before singing ‘are we, we are! And screaming…’ and holding up his mic for the crowd to echo him. I had one hand on my heart, one in the air, screaming ‘heads or tails, fairytales in my mind.’ I felt like Jesus of Suburbia, escaping to a fairytale city to live ‘the rage and love, the story of my life.’ In St. Jimmy Billie roared ‘are you talking to me? Are you screaming at me?’ After the crowd sang the first verse of Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Billie placed his guitar down. He proceeded to attempt a headstand. He soon fell on his arse, but he just got back up, did a dance and announced ‘I’ll fucking do anything for fucking Arizona, I’ll tell you that!’ The song was anthemic. Billie caught something from the crowd, threw it out, then grinned. ‘We’re gonna play a brand new song.’ My mum and I glanced at each other with wide eyes. We had no internet and no idea what they’d been playing. ‘It ain’t that brand new. This song’s called Cigarettes and Valentines!’ We didn’t know the words, but with the strangers around us, we jumped and danced as if our lives depended on it. Burnout followed. If I thought this couldn’t get any better, I was wrong, because then they played One for the Razorbacks. I was drenched in sweat, watching people pass out around us, but I felt like I could pass out and stand straight back up. In 2000 Light Years Away they invited as many fans as they could fit onstage. Security guided them up, they danced, then were escorted back off. The regular oldies section followed. Seeing it here was like seeing it for the first time all over again. My mum and I were our own mosh pit, dancing and shoving and grabbing the other’s arm to scream our favourite lines. King for a Day’s fun dissolved into 21 Guns. Billie spoke into the internal microphone as he returned onstage to rolling drums. We expected Minority. ‘Sing us a song of the century, it sings like American Eulogy…’ We heard American Eulogy, in America. This mass hysteria was like the entire show’s rage, love, energy and passion rolled into one triumphant, dazzling climax as confetti exploded around us and the band. The crowd stilled as the show closed once again with Last Night on Earth, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Good Riddance. No dream of seeing Green Day in their home country could ever have prepared us for this reality. It was better." Absolutely wild that I’d only been alive 12 years when I discovered Green Day, but the Phoenix show was 14 years ago. We were going to go to this show after Phoenix, but by the time we saved up enough to book flights etc there were only $1,000 resale tickets left, so we went to the Grand Canyon instead. I wrote a short recap: "Standing in the rain was worth it as we heard the first chords of Welcome to Paradise. The crowd came alive. For the first time we heard the furious Let Yourself Go from the upcoming ¡Uno! and people stared bewilderedly at us for knowing the words. Oh Love had been released as a single at this point, though, and the sold-out crowd of 25,000 sang along, ‘far away, far away, waste away tonight,’ as one united voice. Walls of death formed and crashed together in She and American Idiot. ‘Danke schöne!’ Billie Joe yelled, over and over. As 99 Revolutions closed, the crowd clapped and wailed goodbye, then ‘one more time!’ The song revved back up again and they were playing an extra chorus. We clapped again. I prepared myself for their set being over again, but Billie Joe did not want to leave Konstanz: ‘one more time!’ he roared and they played the chorus again. Then it really was over. He was playing Good Riddance. I almost missed him running back on stage and mooning the crowd." That was so random. They hadn't been off stage long, so he must have got undressed incredibly quickly to ensure as many people as possible saw his arse. Flogging Molly also dedicated If I Ever Leave This World Alive to Billie that night. Great band, nice gesture. In her mind there was a strong chance this would actually be some creepy old dude trying to kidnap two South American women for human trafficking or something 😂 But seeing how devastated I was, and knowing this was the only way we could make it, as we didn't have money to travel further than Miami AND buy super expensive re-sale tickets for the show (they all had been sold out for months). So she finally agreed to at least check the prices of flights to NJ. Here the universe aligned and we managed to find super cheap flights from Miami to Newark for the day before the concert, and off we went. We met the girl and her parents, she was real, not an internet creep (I never doubted it, but again I was 15 lol), we got the tickets, we went to the show and it was everything that I had dreamed and hoped it'd be. To be honest I don't remember a lot of it, I just remember the feeling and how happy I was. It was also my first stadium concert ever and I remember being blown away by the cheer magnitude of everything. We also managed to go on a super quick tour of NYC in one of those buses before flying back to Miami, which totally laid the foundation for convincing to my sister to travel back to NYC and see the city properly (and go to more GD shows) during the 21stCBD tour in 2009 😂 4 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

See more photos, videos and the setlist on GDA. On this day 12 years ago (4 September 2012), the Kill the DJ and Nuclear Family music videos were released. 14 years ago (4 September 2010), Green Day played the last show of the North American 21st Century Breakdown Tour in Mountain View, CA. This was the other show we made it to after Phoenix. The place was full of Christian protestors when we arrived but they didn't get much attention. We saw AFI's set this time and Green Day invaded the stage in animal costumes. My recap: "Darkness was falling when Song of the Century echoed through the amphitheatre. This was it. The homecoming and final show of the North American tour. It was filled with fans from the Bay Area to Japan to Australia. The band ran onstage together. Billie screamed the names of every unfamiliar town we’d sped past on the CalTrain. ‘Home! Home! I am fucking home! It’s been fucking months! But Green Day are back at home! In the fucking Bay Area! However… if you don’t mind, I’m gonna refer to this night as Rodeo, California.’ Mike pointed at my England flag and stuck his tongue out. When he walked out, he beckoned for me to high-five him but security stopped me. Instead of ‘saving’ a kid in East Jesus Nowhere, Billie pulled up an older lady who ‘saved’ him. They played Murder City and Letterbomb again. My voice that had just recovered from Phoenix was hoarse already. I was directly in Mike’s line of view and for much of the show he pulled faces and interacted with me. I rocked out with Mike Dirnt and I’m still not over it. We knew a few of the words to Cigarettes and Valentines now, but it was like seeing it for the first time all over again. After Geek Stink Breath was Coming Clean. Billie announced ‘this next song is about revenge!’ before Going to Pasalacqua. Everyone was jumping to Only of You. It was followed by an explosive performance of Paper Lanterns. That bled into 2000 Light Years Away. They invited fans on stage. The people in front of me were screaming at me to go. My mum was pushing me. I shrugged and said I didn’t want to. By the time I realised that both Mike and Eddie (band security) were beckoning me, it was too late. In 21 Guns, during that bridge I loved so much, Billie thanked us all for the last 22 years. It was beyond surreal to hear that where it all began in the Bay Area. Then we were thrown back into American Eulogy. I can see, clear as if I’m still there, Billie spinning around as he played the solo. I can still hear the roar of ‘Bay Area!’ and see the confetti covering us. I can still see the band returning to play Last Night on Earth and feel the tears in my eyes as I looked up at the night sky. The tears were still streaming down my face as we left because it was over." Anyway, on this day 7 years ago (5 September 2017), Green Day played a backstage benefit set for people affected by Hurricane Harvey. They played in Tampa, FL later that night. Yes, that's Billie sniffing his hand after doing his thing in Hitchin' a Ride. 25 years ago (5 September 1999), Green Day played a show for Idiot Club members at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, CA. It was the first time they played Church on Sunday. They also played Private Ale for the first time since 1992 and Dry Ice for the first time since 1993. I was surprised to see Desensitized on the setlist, but apparently it was played at two other shows. Looking at my list there are some other dates with just one thing, but I think there are actually only two (25 and 29 December) with nothing at all. I did miss some things at the beginning though. I'll add them at some point if I don't forget. ...And I just realised I didn't include any Pinhead Gunpowder stuff because I don't care about it. This was the first show we went to on the American summer tour and it was one of my favourite shows of the whole tour. It was kind of a miracle that we got there at all. I’ll let @Rumpelstiltskin2000 tell her potential-near-death-experience story, but I was also a victim of my travel plans: a bus from Nottingham to London, a flight from London to Belfast, another flight from Belfast to Providence, a train to Boston, a flight to Dallas and finally, a $1 Megabus to Austin. It took over 72 hours. I think I only slept for an hour until we arrived. It was the only way we could afford it. We actually went sightseeing in the hours we had in Dallas and then in Austin once we’d slept. Pre-pandemic me was made of different stuff. Sadly I never finished my recap and without watching videos my memory of the show is foggy, but I did finish writing the story of our arrival: Spoiler Providence TF Green Airport wasn’t entirely sure how to deal with these weirdos who kept coming to see Green Day. "Why don’t you just see them in England?" "We like to see them in different countries." "Do they play the same set every night?" "Yeah." "Then why do you want to keep seeing it?!" "Well, it’s still different every night – and we just love Green Day." "You guys are crazy!" I offered to show the officer our Green Day tickets, but he laughed and said "no, no, I believe you." After all, most people don’t hide their criminal enterprises by lying that they enjoy bands playing the same set every night. He sang American Idiot as we walked away. His colleagues joined in. We heard them laughing and saying "they’re insane, but it’s kind of cool!" I remember the queue quite well. We got there at about 10AM, but a friend had camped out with a skunk and coyotes howling in the distance. There were some lovely people there – a bloke who carried all our luggage to his car because the hotel wouldn't store it and a lady with her dad who kept bringing us ice lollies. The run from the gates to the pit was like a whole mile and it was HOT. I was actually fit then but like almost everyone else, I just gave up and walked. I think we ended up about 10 people out from Mike, which I was thrilled with considering that I was not expecting to sprint a mile in 35ºC or whatever it was. Another thing I remember is how special it was to see Green Day in Austin. It's a personal story that's only relevant because it's the Green Day Effect (and CW: loss), so I'll stick it in another spoiler. Spoiler My kid was named after that city. He would have been old enough to come with me if he was around (obviously would've bought seated tickets). When others lost loved ones I assured them that they were looking down at them, smiling, but I'd never managed to believe that about my own lost loved ones until that day. I felt like he was right beside for the first time, singing along to Still Breathing with me and telling me it was OK that I'm still alive because seeing me living life to the fullest was all he wanted. Of course nothing like that really happens, but I was able to delude myself for however long Green Day played and I think that was when I came to terms with it. I mean, I'm still crying writing this, but it's OK. It's just what it is. "As my memory rests, but never forgets what I lost." I never talk about this, even with my closest friends, but here I am sharing it with semi-strangers on an internet forum who'll get it because Green Day have affected them in similar ways. Music is such a powerful thing. I also know I was talking about this show when I wrote: “When I listen to audio of Forever Now from the shows I went to I can still feel how sore my throat was from singing all night and then singing that even louder. But most of all I can still feel my lungs about to burst as I screamed ‘I AIN’T GONNA STAND IN LINE NO MORE!’ and the barrier shaking as I jumped until I couldn’t breathe. Then throwing up both of my arms to the pyros at the end.” After the show, Rumpel was taking a photo of me when the security guard in front of us tapped me on the arm and said he'd "never seen anyone so into a show" and it actually made him emotional, so he wanted me to have his setlist. First time I ever got a Green Day setlist. I don't remember getting Mike's pick but that must have come from that guy too. I can't throw or catch to save my life, so I doubt I caught it. ANYWAY! I do like the album now though. 29 years ago (10 September 1995), Green Day played in Offenbach am Main, Germany on the Insomniac Tour. 30 years ago (10 September 1994), Green Day played in Cuyahoga Falls, OH on the Dookie Tour. This was a $5 makeup show for the Cleveland one on 23 July 1994 that went to shit. You could also say that this one went to shit, because the barrier separating the lawn from the seats was broken down and when it rained, people started tearing up the lawn and throwing mud at each other. More photos: Spoiler When the band were soundchecking Billie spoke (through the mic, obviously, not directly) to the people queuing outside. I don't remember exactly what he said. It was something along the lines of "hello to you crazy people lining up to see us." I think he might have mentioned the tour coming to an end too. I got heat exhaustion for the first time in that queue. The amphitheatre is out in the desert and the only shade was by the portaloos, so my friend and I sat there. For the future reference of anyone reading this thread, portaloo "shade" is not shade. The sunlight coming through the plastic will just bake you alive. Catfish and the Bottlemen were supporting and before every show, a roadie fiddled with Van McCann's weighted mic stand for at least 20 minutes so the mic would lay on his face and he could push it around with his mouth. I have no idea how else to describe it. It was weird and he came across as very arrogant, so I'm not going to lie, everyone laughed when he fell over and the whole weighted mic thing came crashing down with him. Anyway, the venue security made sure I had enough water and Eddie (Green Day's security at the time) was looking out for everyone, so I stuck it out and of course it was worth it. They also did the "Jimmy Kimmel's mean tweets" thing. Theirs was "why does Tré Cool from Green Day look like an emo version of Ted Cruz?" Billie said "well, Mike looks like Putin" and he took his sunglasses off to prove it. Personally, I think that is an unacceptable thing to say. I mean, it's not true! "I got four tickets from StubHub to see Green Day on September 12th of 05 in Indianapolis. They were at cost too, so I got really lucky. I took my daughter and two of her friends. The tickets were for the floor SRO. We got there early and there was only one person between all of us and the barricade in front of the stage. You just can't do much better than that. I had been to very many concerts and was going on about what to expect with the girls. Caitlin, my daughter, had been on Green Day websites and got the 'down low' of what pretty consistently goes on at a Green Day concert but she didn't tell me. Man, was I in for a rude awakening. It was so exciting to see them in person and they were so good and really put on a show. But the better they were the closer the crowd moved in and the more squashed I got. I was separated from the rest of the girls. I was finally hoping it would end just so I wouldn't die. I was totally crushed. Finally another fan in the crowd noticed me about to pass out and I was guided to the nearest security guard. I was lifted over the barricade right smack in dead center of the cat walk and handed over to the guard by angry fans because I was in their way. Billie Joe Armstrong just happened to be at the tip of the cat walk playing guitar at the time. I looked him right in the eyes as I touched the stage for balance and then I quickly looked away. I was humiliated to have been 'broken' by the young punks. I missed a lot of the show while I was in the back getting oxygen. Billie looking at me was just as exciting as it was humiliating. But I hated missing some of the best parts of the show. I did make it out while they were playing Wake Me Up When September Ends. I had to come back out at the back of the crowd on the floor and then hunt for the girls when the show was over. I was embarrassed to see them because I just knew that they saw me and would go back to school and tell all about what happened to Caitlin's mom. But after finding them and asking them if they saw they said there was too much commotion going on where they were too and they were getting kicked in the head and everything. So they didn't see.
