Lauren
Maybe the tapes were stolen, but not by a stranger. Maybe Mike thought the album was trash and didn’t want to tell Billie so he stole the tapes to prevent his friend from releasing something bad 😂 1
The 99th revolution
Well mike can't stop his fans from speculating about what he "stole" then, we curious gdcers are unstoppable !!!
Elxufinnishidiot
I remember there being rumours that Tre somehow accidentally deleted the album drunk😂 2

The 99th revolution
Nah it's fine, as long as you don't get rid of a whole band's catalog we cool
teenagekicks
I knew the C&V story was bogus when they played the “song” live and it very clearly has post-21CB lyrics. Sirens screaming, cars crashing, paralyze this moment til it dies. Might as well have been on Uno.
The 99th revolution
Not only that, they nicked things from american eulogy and novacaine.

The 99th revolution
Honestly I'd want a 21cd (get it?) with at least one bonus tracks, but I'm from poland, we never even have people sell less rare shit like the uno dos tre box

The 99th revolution
Either they rewrote it for the tour, made a completely new song or wanted to go for some epic writing

Glad the interviewer knew to ask but I need one to straight out ask “C’mon, was it really stolen or did you just trash it and change gears?” Didn’t Mike go on a podcast years ago alone and tell the story that they just reworked the album and it wasn’t stolen. I think about a year ago someone started a thread that had the clip in it here on GDC.

I forget what he said exactly (I think he also admitted to making the Network album which is another silly secret)
localinsomniac
The casual listener may not know the "lore" behind CV/AI; I guess keeping up the act allows them to continue building the mystique right up until they finally release, if they release it. The 99th revolution
Mike is the most honest of the band, he's even said some of the songs that were on c&v with an interview w/ dj rosstar

I think about a year ago someone started a thread that had the clip in it here on GDC. In early 2004, before the promotion of the album had begun, Mike shared thorough details about the whole process in an interview with Steve Rosen, which was never released but resurfaced when he uploaded it a few years ago. Obviously the band hadn't agreed upon the other "stolen tapes" explanation back then, why it makes this particular interview very interesting (and obviously more thruthfully). In this, he clearly says exactly what most of us would've thought anyway: suddenly, late in the process (before the AI concept came about) they came up a few other songs that they felt had a different quality to it and was "worth chasing", so they did. He also says they could perhaps release a CD a few years down the line with the other batch of songs they scrapped in favour of it. Perhaps this never happaned due to the massive sucess and critical acclaim of American Idiot? 6
That Dude
Green Day always record way more than we know. Everytime they release an album, they may scrap 20-50 songs. And I bet they've recorded before without telling us between album recordings.
Little Boy Named Booze
What's the point of saying for 20 years that it was stolen instead of just saying ''the song we wrote sucks so we restarted from scratch''

Idk how much of a stretch that is but that would explain them not spelling it out for us, considering they’re still with Warner.

Like either Warner wouldn't support them scrapping all that music and fund them starting over or there was a concern that since Warner owned the masters, if they had them they could choose to release them while waiting for their next album and they didn't want it put out, so they made the masters disappear.
