The fucked up thing is that the streaming equivalent is calculated by total amount of streams of the songs in an album. Meaning that if you have 1 hit with 50 million streams, and the rest of the record having 0 streams and 0 physical copies sold, that still counts as 40.000 albums sold.

And yeah I gotta give you Youngblood. It's pretty lyrically weak and honestly with Bobby Sox being out it might be one of my least favorite songs about 80. The "fuck you I'm from Oakland" part is great though.

I interpret the robot line as a commentary on how disconnected we are from each other even though we are "connected" in the sense of being online. So instead of actually meeting up with someone for a romp, you have a robot that you can adjust to your liking. Like we're all so isolated from society and people in general even though we have all this technology that connects us to each other.

That makes sense to me because it reminds me of the days when you would buy records and only listen to a song or two on them because the rest of the album sucked. It would be a lot harder to make album sales from streams if every song had to hit a certain threshold.  Green Day may be an exception where every song is great but that's rare for most albums.

Well, Billboard seems to suggest is a close race to #1, those numbers might be fucked:

They are suggesting the current #1 might release a deluxe edition in streaming to boost the numbers and stay #1. Doesn’t sound like a race for #3. Get that Spotify on continuous repeat people

The lyrics on Saviors are excellent. This is without question one of their best written albums to me. They’re clever, at times very funny, specific, and vivid. They capture the mood of the songs and the mood of the era we’re living in very well. I have been in awe over the last few days at how many incredibly smart and powerful lines are in the mix here.

The only Green Day lyrics I’ve ever found “cringey” are a few here and there from FOAM and the trilogy, but that’s honestly more down to lyrics that I feel don’t match their vibe as a band (“BMX-ellent tits” comes to mind…they’re just not that kind of band, thank god). I also prefer sociopolitical songs with more specificity than less, and at times Billie can be vague on this (I LOVE Revolution Radio and Troubled Times, but these are examples of songs that are pretty general). A lack of specificity is not an issue on Saviors at all for these types of songs, though.

At least you are brave for rating "Warning" that high, although our opinions have almost none common point. Disagreements are proof of how variable opinions Green Day's brilliancy can produce.

I think they probably have written it this way to create some kind of suspense or something. I think a no. 2 would be an accomplishment. No. 1 is probably completely out of reach

 

Since people are ranking their albums I suppose I'll rank mine (I'm including Stop Drop & Roll in here since it is basically just a GD album at this point)

Unless that 40K projection for physical copies is wrong (maybe estimated based on their last release) and doesn’t properly take into account the impact of vinyl variants and last week sales. Again, the CD is currently sold out on Amazon.com with 5000 sales in a week.

i dislike "Uno!" because it sounds very [repetitive in terms of music and also lacks inspiration in melodies, lyrics, drums etc.], but no, i only ''hate'' particular songs, not records. Only songs from "Uno!" i regularly listen |to this day] are "Stay The Night" and "Rusty James", but that does not mean i loathe the rest of the record; it is simply the worst Green Day album to date for me, i would prefer these two songs plus possibly one or two more to be in "Dos!" or "Tré!" and make them two albums. But remember, Billie Joe and others were really off in 2011, so instead of blaming them for "Uno!" during that period i prefer to praise them for the other two records which were much better. [Also "Uno!" still beats more than half of the general discography of all times.]

From "Father Of All..." onwards i do not even dislike the albums, i simply like them less [than others]. "Father Of All" contains three songs i still listen to on a regular basis, "Dookie" at least has good production but a very limited view overall, "Nimrod", like "Uno!", has the problem most songs sound very similar to each other, save five, "Tré!" contains most of my favourite tracks from 2012, "Dos!"' first half is not the best but completely redeems itself in the second and after "1.039 SOSH" it keeps getting better and better, until i reach my two favourite records which have almost no misses at all.

Needless to say Green Day are my favourite band, so the first five in my ranking are also my five favourite albums in general.

Have a nice time preparing these videos!

Not sure if it belongs in this conversation, however i would like to say a small complaint that grew in my head since i listened to the album for an eighth time after release (skipping "Look Ma, No Brains" and "Coma City"). Something which now seemed partially weird was the songs' placement. The most affective amongst them is that "Dilemma" and "Goodnight Adeline" in every aspect feel like they should be together, consecutive songs. Both high energy ballads, both refer to hangover situations, both have a mourning attitude. i am unable to understand the goal of "1981" being between them. Was it placed there to break the motiv? Was it put here because it could not find any other placement in Side A? Or did the production team think it was flowing better in that order? (Other ''misplacements'' were minor and did not hurt the listening experience at all.)

I could keep going. I’ll never dog on anyone for liking the trilogy, FOAM, etc.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and albums mean a lot to people for very personal reasons. The trilogy came out right at a time I was starting to figure out life and those jangly guitars instantly transport me back to a simpler time. But Saviors lyrics as a whole are lightyears ahead of anything they’ve done since 21CB, and to suggest otherwise is pretty out there.

Due to inflation, the average American can no longer afford bottle rockets and due to light pollution we don’t see shooting stars, so they adjusted the lyrics accordingly. Hurricanes and airlines, given the state of the climate could continue to be relevant however.
